Look for the even better, and rarer, GM5 - which has an EV, in a body just about as small as the GM1. Alas however i can't recommend the lens, which is just not sharp enough. Get either a 14mm or 17mm Panasonic lens.
My GM1 has been my travel camera for the past 8 years, easy to carry in a jacket pocket or a small bag. Recently replaced it with the Panasonic G100, a bit larger but easier to hold and has a flip screen.
I still use my GM1 in holidays with the 12-32mm lens, that provides OIS , so handheld low light shots with low shutterspeed is no problem , and with the new lightroom denoise functionallity one can really improve your results as you showed. For low light indoor events with moving people/objects I have and prefer a Sony full frame camera, greetings from the Netherlands.
@TomCalton thanks Tom i love yours too! Your TikTok videos inspired me to give the vertical content stuff a go this year. It is tough! Haha you make it look so easy 😂
Awww amazing! And thank you, you're kind to say that 😊 You're right though, shorts are a whole different ball game. I made daily shorts for around 6 months straight. It was killer and I failed A LOT, but I learnt a bunch about content creation in the process. 😅
Have you tried running the raw files through DXO PureRaw? I use the GX800 with the 20mm F1.7 as my EDC and honestly after @microfournerds video on the DXO One "camera" I completely changed my mind on the viability of a smaller sensor camera in 2023/24 as the noise reduction and increased detail is so substantial but kets me keep a gorgeous tiny form factor and my lenses!
Alternatives: Panasonic GF7/GF9 and GX800/880 that are very similar and yet doesn't have the high price of an X100 of the 4/3 sensors. Also they all have a flip screen that is nice to have on street photography.
I just bought and GX800 with 12-32 and 35-100 kit lenes for less than 200€ and WOW. Such a tiny camera with a lot to offer. Now i have it with the 14mm 2.5 and its my personal "ricoh griii" camera for edc !
I’ve recently sold mine, but I used it mainly with the 14mm f2.5 pancake. Super compact, fast autofocus, great IQ, lens diameter fits as if it was designed for the camera, unlike the 20mm which sticks out on the bottom.
@@TomCalton I recently upgraded from M4/3 to the Panasonic S5ii and full frame. I was really tempted to keep the GM1 as it’s a jewel of a camera, but I figured that for daily carry around and skiing it would be left at home in favour of my DJI Osmo action 4 and iPhone. After seeing this video I kinda regret selling it, though phone and action camera tech has improved hugely in the past 10 years so not losing much IQ these days.
I really wish Panasonic/OM Systems would focus more on releasing a worthy competitor to Fujifilm X100 series. They have all the ability and tech to put out a solid travel/street kit.
Panasonic seem to have from their announcements put up the white flag in this area of photography and consider the phone has won. There is no reason to believe the disappearance of compact kit will be restricted purely to fixed lens kit. Even Fuji seem to have walked away from their more compact rangefinder style cameras and the SLR looking kit is the only choice. There is just no market size to fund any wide variety of kit style.
Used it as a second body to my X-E4 while traveling. Kept the 42.5mm f/1.7 on it. Makes it like the size of a digital compact with the zoom lens extended. The controls are terrible, specifically the command wheel, and it doesn't have useable tracking autofocus which is my favorite way to shoot street, but other than that it's not bad. The wheel is impossible to use without accidentally hitting the D-pad and makes it very difficult to change the aperture quickly. If you like small manual lenses with manual aperture rings it's a great fit for that.
I love this camera. I have it and I mainly use it paired with the sigma 30mm f2.8 or the lumix 45mm f.1.7 for street photography because I have the Xf10 (fuji) and the Ricoh Griii … it is a really cute camera, and the photos are juste gorgeous.
I used to be a m43rds fan and still have my gear; but to be honest my cellphone takes better images when it comes to color, dynamic range, and low light performance. Moreover, it has better auto focus; not to mention the cellphone advantages.
Then you either have an exceptional great cellphone, or exceptional bad gear. My OMD-10 with 1.8 prime lens wipes the floor with all premium smartphones any day. It's just to bad the battery time sucks and it's still not compact enough.
@@saschahoppe4833 I have a Panasonic GX9 with the Panasonic f1.7 and the Olympus f1.8. I think OMD line is better in many ways: it has better autofocus and a beautiful color signature. On my camera the contrast based autofocus is very bad when it comes to subject tracking even Panasonic itself moved away from this type in the recent years and now is using phase detect autofocus like the others. Compared to my phone S23 Ultra, my camera is only better in the resolution aspect. This does not mean I cannot get very good pictures with it, but... the phone is way more convenient and "good enough" in most cases.
I've been using one for 10 years as a carry on, and it did a great job. I've put the 14mm f2.5 on it -and nothing else!- that is marginaly bigger than your lens (and is still cheap at around 220 GBP) and I've had countless excellent images with it. I added a leather mini-grip similar to yours. Only problem with cam is the on/off ring button got lost at some point, but you can still operate it with your nail. Also, wish they had working Wifi, but you can still buy cheap Wifi SD cards and that's what I've been using to transfer files to the phone etc for 'social' snaps... I also wish they had continued that line a bit further, it is a cracking little camera.
Thank you, I appreciate your kindness! I've really enjoyed using this camera and have plans to feature more M43 cameras on the channel too. In fact, I've got 2 here ready to go, so keep an eye out for those videos coming very soon!
I've had a GM1 for about 10 years ago and I agree with your evaluation. However I've not used it much after getting the LX100 MKI as it has an EVF Leica lens, Leaf shutter and shoots good 4k. The 7A 18mm would be a good addition.
I have the Leica D-Lux 7 which is the equivalent to the LX100 MkII and these fixed lens zoomy cameras are great. They are not as good as the GX80/85 though, with the lens being the main, probably only advantage even though it is not interchangeable. The lens is on the bulky side but very well engineered and f1.7 gives it a massive advantage in low light compared to the f6 lens in the video.
@@hedydd2 Yes the Gx85 has advantages over the LX100. And I have a full suite of M43 lenses, but got the LX100 as compact travel stills and video camera and the fast Leica zoom on the LX100 makes for a more compact kit than the compact interchangeable lens bodies. I've used the LX100 for some occasional light production work like interviews News gathering and B-Roll and cut it with a Blackmagic and GH4. I also did some hand-held low-light documentary scenes with the LX100 it preformed well. I opted for the silver version to look like a tourist. With a DSLR or production camera I get harassed, but almost never does anyone say anything about the silver LX100. And a couple of times people asked if i was taking video I've said "Oh, this shoots film'. Hanging the LX100 off one shoulder and using the smart phone app zoom and operate the camera, and I've got some really good candid street shots that way as you look like a someone browsing on a phone with a camera around his neck or side.
That is not a leaf shutter, but rather a "focal plane" shutter. Phase detect AF is not more accurate than contrast detection AF, there is a trade off between speed and accuracy.
Very good video Tom. Just a small suggestion, if you show your photos with a black background your photo colors will look a lot more vivid. The white backgrounds tend to washout colors, so give it a try and see if you don't like them better.
If ur gonna settle for 16mp I'd go for the Nikon Coolpix A, not interchangable, but packs an awesome punch with its 28mm f/2.8 equivalent lens and its 16mp APSC sized sensor
This was my first camera, bought it just before I moved to China for a year! Super little camera. Looked for a GM5 also to get the EVF but a bit too expensive. Great little bit of kit, and the lumix 12-32 is a neat little kit lens for it that still keeps the size down. Moved to Olympus for bigger bits of glass (there’s some comical photos somewhere of my GM1 with a giant zoom on it in a camera shop) but great little camera.
I sold mine. My Samsung Mini gave me consistently better results especially in low light, even though it has a smaller sensor. Also, two of the three Mini lenses have OIS. Another thing I had a problem with on the GM1 is that the function wheel on the back is very fiddlely. But I agree it is a beautiful camera, the output just did not wow me as much as the one from my Mini. And I used it with the Oly 12/2 mostly. I know it's a different focal length than you use here, but if you have a chance to get the 17mm for the Mini, for my taste and preferences that lens is mind blowing. I used to own a Ricoh GR and I sold it too, the Mini was better for me.
That's actually the lens I performed the AF tests with, but I felt it was a little too big and bulky on this camera for what I wanted this setup to be. Brilliant lens though!
Ironically it's almost too large for the GM1. If placed on a desk, it rests on the lens. The 14mm f2.5 is perfect for the GM1 though. Loved my time with this camera.
I used to own one. Optically really really good. But on this camera it's too thick. sticks out on the bottom. And it's awfully slow in terms of autofocus. I'd pick the 15mm F1.7 instead.
Interesting! I didn't even know such a small mirrorless camera exists. For street / vacation, however, this setup with the wide angle lens would not make much sense to me, as the smartphone replaces that probably fairly well and does not cost "extra luggage". However, I'd love such a camera for *portrait* work. Can you recommend a decent portrait lens, which is as compact and lightweight as possible, but has a very wide aperture (0.95, 1.2 would be ideal) and a focal length equivalent to 50-85mm fullframe? Can be manual, AF would not be so important in this case. It doesn't even have to be razorblade sharp, as I love if lenses produce some character in the images. That character, however, should have some appeal to it and not just be a soft image. ;) Thanks a lot for that video and - maybe - for a lens recommendation!
I had had my GM5 in the past before I lost it 😢😢😢. Pairing with 15mm 1.7 which was the best street photography combo…..I still missed it….i wish Panasonic will consider to make it again.
I had a look at this camera before I got my Pentax Q7. which I just think is better. not only do you get an amazing leaf shutter and built in ND with the lens's. you have so so many options for customisation. But personally I love the filmic look of both of these camera's. perfect travel camera's
Sony A5000 20MP or even better an A5100 24MP is also a great option with an APS-C sensor and the Sony E-mount. Might be slightly bigger but I personally like slightly wider focal lengths (1.5x APS-C crop).
GM1 is my best all time favourite and most satisfied camera, I felt I was wise that chosen M43 system, now still amazed with it's outstanding performance on such tininess, well it does has a lot of "deficiencies" compared to its "functionally bloated" chunky siblings, however it's still more than capable for my hobby shooting needs, after all compactness is the major reason people had chosen M43, aren't we? LONG LIVE M43!
These cameras are becoming more and more popular and prices are rising up. I got a GM5 last year. The price doubled since then. The GM1 price went up too although not as steep. I would recommend the GM5 over the GM1 because of the EVF. Matter of personnal preference of course. There is also a third option. That is the G100 which I consider to be a successor to the GM5 (with 2 extra centimeters in width and height). The G100 has a more modern M43 sensor and a rotating LCD. My experience with the GM5 is that I would appreciate that rotating LCD rather often, unless you enjoy crawling on the ground :)
I was going off the measurements listed on Wikipedia. Either way, I think you're right by saying we're talking about a few mm here and there. Crazy they were able to make something this small with a decent sized sensor.
I had one GM1 paired to the Olympus 15mm lens cap & it was good fun for the size. This video has me thinking about maybe a GM5 with the Olympus 8mm lens cap.
The LUMIX people on eBay are pretty proud of their cameras as are those on Facebook marketplace They seem to be ranging from $350-$550 on both places so that’s way out of my budget
i pay 350 dlrs for the lumix gm5 body in argentina :c but very happy, in this country is unique this camera, i love it, and i buy 42.5 1.7 yougnuo for 150 dlrs
All cameras should have a pop-up flash. it's a legit P&S look that I love. It always generates glib comments by reviewers. /rant great review though. I dig a tiny camera.
I've got the GM5, and I've gotten some beautiful shots using the 12-32mm kit lens. I wish Panasonic would come out with an updated GM ... they'd sell a million of them!
Great vid Tom. I'm getting into street photography a bit more now and want to buy a small compact camera like this with the ability to change lenses, preferably something similar to the 7 artisans model you demonstrated. Gonna try to shoot with a 35mm equivalent lens as I think it will push me to get closer to subjects on the street/outdoors.
For just a little size compromise you can get another overly underrated tiny M43 camera which I think is perfect for stills, Xiaomi’s Yi M1. It has a 20MP sensor, way better battery life, 4k30p video, and is dirt cheap. I’ve seen used ones go for less than 70€ That camera is criminally underrated for the price to performance it has, especially for used ones. It was always overlooked because of terrible initial reviews it got due to the bad firmware. They fixed that later but it never got the love it deserved. If you can, please try it out, you won’t be disappointed and it would be another banger video idea.
Oookay I really don’t know how I ended up here since I’m not really into photography yet BUT first of all, your videos (and photos of course) are great :) AND second of all, I just impulsively bought a secondhand Panasonic GF7 as an alternative for this cam + the 7Artisans lens & I can’t wait to capture this year’s special moments. Also I really like the “simple” look of the pictures you took with this set. For me its not really about the highest quality pictures, but the moments you capture and the charme delivered. Especially since I’m a bloody beginner lol.
I've had my eye on a Lumix gm1 for years, but never actually got one (a regret, to be sure). I used to have a G9 and a GX85 (both fantastic cameras as well) and had quite a collection of m43 lenses, so getting a smaller camera to pair up with the 20mm lumix lens made sense. (Side note: I also had an Olympus om-d e-m10 mark ii which was another great micro 4/3 camera). Really, micro 4/3 is just a great format for compact photography. Now to find a camera you haven't featured yet so that they're not super expensive on ebay...
@@LoscoX 1) Just upgrade you iphone, 2) Raw isn't that big of a deal, unless you have the dynamic range to start with. 3) Examples provided looked iPhone quality, and you have to have your iPhone on you anyway. You don't have to have that camera. If I'm going to put up with carrying a camera, it need to provide a **definitive** smack down to my phone.
Great video Tom in my opinion that lens is a bit too much of a compromise as it makes the shots look very mobilesque ,, possibly the slightly bigger f1.7 pancake would be perfect
Is it better than the camera on an excellent smartphone? Provided you’d allow yourself to add the few 100€ for this camera on top of the price frame you’d normally go for w.r.t to smartphone purchase. Think of advanced image stabilsation, noise reduction.. etc..?
I believe the only camera that deserves its VERY low price even after 12 or 13 years of launch is the Samsung ES95. This is one of the greatest small cameras ever made with its very excellent pictures quality 👌🏻
GM1 is a great camera. I have a few of them. Better than the GM5. Lens most used with GM1: Panasonic 14mm f/2.5, Pan 20mm f/1.7, Pan 12-32mm. I also have the small Panasonic GX850, worth considering. And, you can remove dust from the sensor, if necessary. Can't remove dust froma fixed lens camera like the Fuji x100. Thanks. toronto canada.
Uhm, i will give my 2 cents having owned an GX-7 (same sensor as the GM-1) and the X-E2(same as the X-M1 but with passable autofocus) The Panasonic will win hands down in Video quality Useability with touchscreen Autofocus speed. Also there are more native primes available that are both small and affordable. The Fujifilm Better image quality Better all-round system with their modern camera's where you can share your investments. While me and my girlfriend (The G3 and GX7 we used to own were primarily her tools) completely moved to fujifilm. I can't deny that in terms of fun in small packages Panasonic with M43 had the advantage. It just had a significant advantage in small primes. We just didn't care as much for those advantages and prefered the rather excellent versatile kit zoom that came with the Fujifilms. That it was slightly bigger and heavier was something we did not mind.
I do have butter fingers and dropped and broke two of them. It breaks instantly when you drop it. I bought the small olympus pen mini and even dropped the pen mini and it's built like a tank. I loved the images and touch focus of the GM1, but I couldn't handle the ergonomics due to me being clumsy. Olympus pen mini is still stylish, and way cheaper than the GM1.
I had the GM5 and sold it. No image stabilisation and does get quite large with lenses. I was using the Olympus 17/1.8 with it. Jpegs had an over processed compact camera look to it. I had much better image quality from the Olympus EM1 Mark 1. My only regret was selling it in 2017…. Worth more now in 2024
Looks great for all purpose or random photography, but I'm looking for a ultra compact mirrorless camera with optical features for indoor concerts and low light conditions... any suggestion for reasonable price? I don't care so mucho about MP or non updated device; most important is the ISO accuracy with difficult light and dpi performance. RAW would be an appreciated plus! Thanks... wish you a great success!
It would be great if you compared it to an average smartphone, cropping the phone's raw file to an equivalent focal length so we could watch this combination lose badly in almost every every. Don't waste your money, people
Bad JPG colours. The GM5 is better imho as it has an EVF. Focuses very fast for SAF. But it is quite cramped so I swapped it and the 14mm lens for a Ricoh GR and then a Fuji XE2, the latter was far more fun to use.
The modern smartphone has killed this kind of camera and the fixed lens compact cameras stone dead. They are only good for people that do not have a smartphone. £200 is too expensive for that camera. For between £50 and £100 more you can get a throughly modern and infinitely better but bigger GX80 which has a better sensor, tilting screen, electronic viewfinder, two top control dials, flash and the newer smooth relatively silent shutter which doesn’t cause shutter-shock blur. If you have a GM1, it is a little beauty and ‘little’ is the attraction and advantage to it, but it is totally outclassed nowadays.
Nothing beats what you get out from the Fujifilm X-Series cameras sensors, there's no competition there, even old models still beats any other standard sensors IF you are looking for natural looking images instead of mathematical perfect ones.
Prefer the Ricoh GR III… small camera, apsc sensor, ibis, leaf shutter (and no, the lumix does not have a leaf shutter, it has a curtain shutter), and takes amazing photos.
I am wondering if, in the era of smartphones, especially those belonging to the latest highest level of models, cameras of this size and characteristics have any sense at all... P.s.: anyway I like your video 👍
Nope the luggage thing is getting to be a "thing" on many airlines in the US, especially the low-cost carriers, although many of the mid-tier airlines like United and Delta do give you a carry-on free for a competitive price (United does have a no-carry-on ticket fare which is just for a backpack only and a bit cheaper, but airlines like Southwest and Delta still give you a free carry-on with pretty much any ticket).
If you liked the GM1, wait until you get a load of the GM5! I wish Panasonic would return to producing these tiny gems. Also an alternative if you want something even cheaper, albeit with a slightly noisier shutter, take a look at the Olympus E-PM2. What the GM1 gains with an electronic and silent shutter, the E-PM2 more than makes up with in-camera 3-axis stabilisation and the option to mount a high-res EVF.
This is just what i was looking for! The aesthetic is what I need for my vacation to the 🇺🇸 How much of the aesthetic of those photos/films is credited to the camera and how much is the Lense / editing ? I don’t need the camera to be particularly small, I just want the look 📸 so if I could get a cheaper camera with that artisans lense it would be nice 😅
Probably the Olympus M.Zuiko 150-400mm f/4.5. That would give you the field of view of an 800mm lens on full frame. It's expensive though: it will run you about $6400 used. For a quarter of the price, you could get the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4-6.3. Variable aperture and a stop slower at the long end. (Either lens would physically dwarf the camera, of course, but both have tripod collars.)
How do you practice your street photography? Do you go on the treadmill set it to a brisk 3 and a youtube steetwalk on the big ole Tele, while you carry your favorite street camera? Me Toooooooo!!!
Hey there, love the video and I just ordered a brown variant (should arrive next week) but I’m trying to look for that Grip extension, not the L Bracket but the one on the left when you show them both. What’s that grip called?
I don't quite agree with the thing you said about phase detection AF being more accurate than contrast-based AF. While phase detect AF is definitely quicker than contrast-based AF, since it measures not only whether the image is sharp, but also how far the lens needs to turn for the image to be sharp. With contrast-based AF on the other hand, the camera only measures whether edges have high contrast and adjust the lens based on that. It continuously checks "is this sharper then the setting before?". This can lead to behavior called "Hunting" where the camera tries to figure out the sharpest point, slightly overshooting the sharpness point and having to dial back. because it always compares it to the previous value. Now to the point I disagree with: Phase detect AF, while being a lot quicker, can actually be less accurate, especially on DSLRs. Because phase detect AF used to require a separate sensor (so not integrated into the actual image taking sensor), it would need to be calibrated super precisely to the distance of the imaging sensor in order to provide accurate focus. Otherwise the AF-Sensor would tell the camera "Yep, all in focus", while the image was clearly not. I've had some trouble with that on my Canon 80D with a few cheaper lenses, that I did not have when using the live-view shooting mode, which uses contrast-AF
Would you say it's a fast camera? I'm looking for something like this for quick street photography and my two older Canons take a while to process the shot.
In terms of processing images, yeah, it's not bad at all. Obviously, it's 10 years old so it'll be slower than more modern cameras, but I'd say it's plenty fast enough for street photography
Love the video😃. I've been contemplating getting a camera for months that I can use to take good pictures and video content at the gym and outdoors. Would this camera do the job? I'm hesitant about getting an expensive 4K camera as I don't think I'll use it to its capacity. What would you advise?
Thanks! I mean, yeah, this would work, but really the main strength of this camera is its size. If you don't need a super small camera then there are potentially better and cheaper options out there for what you need. Do you NEED it to be super small?
