Love this little bugger! Might have to look into this one for my street photography! Btw, have you seen or considered the Xiaoyi Yi-M1? Similar form-factor, more questionable features, I guess, being a random Chinese brand... I'd love to hear your thought on this? Cheers from Bulgaria!

I own a GM-1 but am more likely to leave the house with a GM-5, which is essentially the same size but adds an electronic viewfinder and a hot shoe. My lenses of preference for these tiny bodies are the LUMIX 20mm f1.7 and the Olympus 45mm f1.8, which is a pretty decent portrait lens.

Yeah same, since I got the 20mm it´s been more or less permanent on my GM-5 I don't use the EV much because it's so bloody small... Probably I got spoiled with the EV on the GX7 and GX8.

I'm the proud owner of a GM1 for a decade now and glad that I have found your channel. I supported M4/3 tech since the PEN for all the reasons and has been a faithful user of Panasonic. Started with an LX3, then moved to a GF1 (white body) and finally the GM1.

I just got one a month ago and am intending to use it for some travel. Absolutely love my GM1. Really happy with the results. I hadn't used M43rds much since 2013. I was also pleasantly surprised by the video performance. Despite the poor codec the better sensor seems to result in better video quality than my old GH3. My only complaint is it's too easy to accidentally hit the D-pad and pull up white balance or similar while adjusting aperture, etc. Touch screen works great though. Camera pairs really nicely with my old 20mm f/1.7 first gen and I picked up the Lumix 42.5mm which fits great on it and the added stabilization is great. I've found myself reaching for this over my Fuji rangefinder recently because, as you say, versatility and interchangeable lenses in a small package is amazing. My sling bag is the 20mm, the 42.5mm, and the 7-14mm f/4.0 which is one of my all time favorite lenses. If i was shopping now though I'd do the 9mm f/1.7. Would be perfect set of tiny primes.

Always admired the GM1 - it's one of the most extreme expressions of what makes M43 great. Funny you mention the E-PL6 and it's horrendous menus because it was picking that very camera up that started to bring me around to M43. Yes, the full menu system was horrible, but the quick menu had everything I thought I'd need day to day on it and was quite well implemented. That said, Panasonic menus are so much more intuitive and make you feel like you've had the camera for years, right from the first day. I didn't take the plunge into M43 until 3 years ago, when I bought a used E-M10 MkII and now I'm hooked. It's jacket pocketable with the like of a Meike 28mm f/2.8 or the Panny 12-32, but a GM1 with that body cap lens would be jeans pocketable and that's a trump card in some cases. Definitely tempted!

Glad you were able to pick one up! I was very lucky indeed last year with the camera gods blessing me with a Black GM1 with a 12-32mm kit lens for $45 AUD which is like 20 odd GBP. Jumped on it so fast when I saw the ad and I've been very happy with mine. I usually pair it with the Panasonic 14mm F2.5 most of the time and it's a great little camera for a walkabout or for travel. I think maybe one day I'll have to look out for one in a bright colour likes yours :)

Having watched this Vid I just snapped up an E-PL6 body a few days ago Like new with 80 shutter activations! I could not resist. I see what you meant about the menus but I’m getting the hang of them now after a few days of messing about with it. I do like the build and size. Only thing it didn’t come with is the snazzy little screw on hand grip which would be useful. Been trying to track one down but they are hard to get and the ones I’ve seen are silly prices for a bit of moulded plastic! :) I'll look forward to your review and see how you get on with it.

I share the mini camera bug-- In film days I had the original Olympus XA and a few Rollei 35s. My first M4/3 was a GX850 (US version of GX800). ..wish I still had it. I have picked up an Olympus E-pl7 looking for that small camera but after getting a Sony RX-100III I think I may have filled my pocket-sized needs. That's not to say that you and Robin Wong haven't made a case for the G100 recently--if one can look beyond the "Vlogger" marketing. A year a go I was looking for a replacement Panasonic 12-32 and found one with the old metal mount.. AND it was attached to a GM1for $135 US.. I thought I would Ebay the camera--- but ,,like a lost pup,,It's wormed it's way into my camera bag. Fun video as usual!!

I was extremely lucky to be gifted a grey import GM1 from a chap on Freecycle, which started my whole M43 journey. I'd been learning the ropes in photography with a Panasonic LX10, and later an FZ2000. But that GM1, and the 25mm 1.7 I bought to use with it, blew those two competent cameras out of the water. I shot a friend's wedding (informally) with the GM1 and I was hooked. On a side note from that wedding, I used the flash an awful lot, tilting it back with my finger and bouncing it off the ceiling in the reception venue - worked pretty well Now I have a G9 and a suite of lenses, but I've continued to take the GM1 out as a backup/side arm for weddings and trips. I quite like using a 15mm Oly bodycap on the GM1 and pretending that it's a 90s point and shoot - an effect I enhance with DxO Filmpack. Anyway, that's my gush over - thanks for a great video as always Emily

Great video :) Discovered your channel tonight and love it. I bought a little GM1 last summer and I really, really wanted to love it. I have it paired with the 15mm 1.7 Summilux lens and the images are beautiful, but one thing that that I just can't get to grips with is the super awkward exposure compensation dial. If pressed ever so slightly too hard it activates the white balance button and drives me mad! Maybe I need to have a more sensitive touch or just leave it alone :) If I could deactivate the white balance button I would but I don't think it's possible.

I got my GM1 to replace my Ricoh GR because it was such a dust magnet. There was nothing I could do to keep the GR sensor clean. I needed interchangeable lenses to access the sensor for cleaning but the strange thing is that I’ve never needed to clean the sensor on my GM1 after 6 years of use. I really liked using the GR but dust was a huge issue for the GR even with babying it against dust.

I bought a GM1 new, which was my first m43 camera (then I got GX80, GX9 and G9...), and I loved it since the beginning, but finally last year I sell it to get a GM5. And I think I made the good choice as I prefer the GM5 for the viewfinder in full sun, and also mainly for the better clickable dial, which make it SO much easier, than the rotating wheel of the GM1, to change settings (exposure compensation and aperture in my case). Fantastic little gems from Lumix ! Paired with 14mm F2.5 and 20mm F1.7, it is my Ricoh GR/GRx combo like :)

While I dragged my G9 with 100-400mm through the Amazon rainforest and Galapagos, my GX850 was my most used camera! In the age of cellphotography, there's a place for small cameras that complement our cell phones like the Lumix ZS 200 with 1 inch senor or even the small sensor-huge zoom Lumix ZS80. Keep beating the drum for small cameras. Maybe you can make Panasonic see the light!😊👍

Mine looks like one of Jim Marshall's old Leicas - beat to hell with the leatherette wearing off - and I bought two more - one for my wife and one as a backup. Stick a premium lens on it & it produces stunning pictures - not for a "beginner's camera," or an "amateur snapshot camera" ... stunning pictures - period. I graduated to more sophisticated Lumix cameras, but I will always have a soft spot for the GM1 and it still sits on the kitchen counter, ready for unexpected photo-ops.

Hi Emily, GM1 is still going strong! It was my first MFT body after 30 years of different Canon systems. However, quite soon I realized that framing in bright light was almost impossible as it dis not have any viewfinder. So I traded it to GM-5 and as some others have earlier commented it is in my view the best pocket carry MFT still! I like it so much that grabbed another body a few years ago with two lenses and the net for the body was 100€! So my travel kit fits in less than half a liter and I can have a good prime or a wide zoom in one and small telefoto or telefotozoom in the other. When I want to get serious or need the finest details, I will grab my G9. Hope you can include the GM-5 in your future comparison.

Hi Emily. Happy New Year! I was wondering if you would know how a Panasonic 35-100mm lens would work with an Olympus OM-D-EM10 camera. My concern is that the lens has OIS and no switch to shut it off. Will the OIS work against the IBIS in my camera?? What do you think? Have you ever tried this lens. On what camera(s) did you try it? Please give me your opinion. I am a Micro 4/3 nerd as well. Okay I am a nerd in training... (an NIT!) Thanks for your answer. :)

I’m new to your channel and I have been enjoying learning about the wonderful world of micro 4/3.😊 Thinking of getting one myself but I’m not sure what to get. Want a camera that’s small enough to fit in a pocket but capable and is a bit future proof with its specs. I’ve sort of narrowed it down to 2. Lumix GM5 and the GX85. Which do you think is the better one? I wanna pair it up with the 20mm f1.7. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.😊

I bought one just a few hours ago and I won't lie: it's partly because of your video (really hesitated between this one and a gx800 but first found first bought). Already love it tho

I've got a dodgy-sounding stick-on rubber grip on the front of my GM5. It's great.

Got my hands on one of these in the exclusive blue color while on a trip in Japan! After a more time shooting with this cutie, you have any other MUST HAVE lenses you love paired with the GM1? I've mostly been using my Lumix G 14mm, F2.5 II ASPH to keep it pocketable.

I've found Olympus menus mostly avoidable with the Super Control Panel. Not enough reviews cover it and almost no one says about the "For viewfinder" on Sonys. Very similar way to avoid menus.

My first M4/3 camera was a GF1 + 20mm f/1.7, amazing size - but GM1 is even smaller, and while I shoot a G9 now, I would love a tiny camera like this, I would slap my 20mm on it as a street camera.

I also own and love a GM1, in black unfortunately but it's a gem still. I'm LOVING your ever more colorful small camera collection! I just bought a E-PL9 in gorgeous Denim Blue after years of searching, so happy with it! The one thing that got me REALLY curious in this video is the spray painting of your gx850. A video on that would be ❤❤❤

Hi since your gm1 from japan how are you able to convert it to english? And do you ever consider changing it to gm5? Also have a gm1 but was thinking if its worth the upgrade going to gm5 :)

Hi, Emily, really love your humorous sense, and enjoy your Lumix videos, really fun to watch. Wonder if you can make a video about compact cameras, non interchangeables, i know you made one on ricoh GR III, but i wanna hear more advice from you on Lumix or panasonic or any brand you can, holding my chin in my hands.

It's nice you talk about the old stuff GM1. It seams all Lumix Ambassadors buying time for Panasonic until the finely revealing new Cameras. I know that a lot of Lumix lovers want to see new Cameras. I have the G9 and I love the beast a lot bud a upgrade model would be awesome. There is no indication off it will be revealed this year or next year!

The only thing better than my orange gm1 is that blue! I’ve had it for years and though I have ‘better’ cameras, I still take the gm1 out usually with the 20mm f1.7 and the kit 12-32 is great too. When it was new, I saved $100 by buying the orange, everyone wanted the black so the orange was actually discounted!

It's funny, because I can't ever find buttons nor menu items on my Panasonic, but my Olympus is so easy for me .. I guess they must represent different ways of organizing info in your brain in some way. My gx85 is objectively superior, but the ePL5 I got from Japan on ebay is now what I want to grab most of the time! Just wish I could find a 20mm f1.7 ii apsh for it .. Used they are still up at $200 :/

You also have the great but forgotten Samsung NX mini. 3 lenses were made for it : 17mm equivalent to 50mm in FF (rare and expensive as hell, but who want a lens for a camera that nobody use or own?) 9mm equivalent to 28mm in FF (got it, it's sharp but too wide for me) 9-27mm which is more common but quite big. I also have 3D printed an adapter to fit my little Fuji c-mount lenses, which is "okay" since it partially cover the 1 inch sensor of the camera.
