I'm happy to see you diversifying into the mini pc area as not everyone appreciates a full size pc next to their tv. I've owned the UM790 pro for a while now using it as a gaming entertainment system in my living room. I've experimented with Batocera, and now Chimera os. Given that this pc is more suited as as tv gaming console, i would appreciate any videos that explains the the best way to gain extra performance and functionality from dedicated Linux os such as chimera or Bazzite. Just watched you at Moore's Law is Dead channel and hey! I'm typing this on my UM790 Pro on a Samsung S95B TV. Got this last year soon after launch and after a recent BIOS update, which allowed me to dedicate 8GB of VRAM, the gaming performance improved a lot! This is an awesome entertainment PC and light gaming PC. I have a spare Radeon 5700 GPU so I'm thinking of hooking it up to this miniPC to double the GPU performance.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad P16 Gen3 with a 7840U and 64GB LP-DDR5x that Lenovo configured for 45W (which would make it a 7840HS in practice), and in my measurements it's around an RX 570, so that a 65W configuration gets it to around an RX 580 makes perfect sense. I don't really game on my laptop, but it's fun to play around with. The Linux drivers are mint, btw. My RX 580 (that replaced my HD 7990 due to dwindling Crossfire support in games) sits on "the shelf of true heroes" in my hardware closet. The thing was an absolute trooper and the retirement reason was a move to 1440p during the 'rona because work from home became a thing, and staring long hours at code in 1080p was becoming a strain on my old eyes.

Amazing how you get all this on the same chip. We are so so so close now for integrated graphics being pretty much powerful enough. We just need something about in line of a 3060 to pretty much replace low end gaming imo

This, the um690s (6900hx / 680m), the um780xtx, or comparable system will all play pretty much any game from 2020 and before (obviously not at 4k 120fps, but definitely enjoyable).

Getting older meant I preferred tiny and compact cases to large rgb setups. I'd love to get one of these, but I already own a cheap dell optiplex micro form factor which is pretty decent for office work and also plays older titles. For the newer games, I just can't compromise on the visuals so I have a dedicated gaming pc.

You can run the x86 univeral tuning utility to overclock this guy a bit too. I run mine at 75 watts and run the gpu at 3100mhz which nets about a 20% bump in performance on average.

When i had no GPU for 10 days in my system i used 7800x3d igpu i had 120 fps average in cs 2.. with 1024 resolution low settings lol. Battlefield 2042 23 fps :D

Methinks thou art understating the 580's performance considerably. Or mine just likes to work really good. Something. Testing Cyberpunk's benchmark, at 1080P Low with FSR Quality I got a result of 77.88fps average with a minimum of 61 according to the game's statistics. Mine is slightly overclocked (1450mhz core, stock memory, stock memory timings), but that's a fairly stark difference for equivalent settings. So I turned them up to High preset... 76.98/59.70. Legitimately no impact on framerate despite the increase in settings.

High setting getting the sameish result is erroneous, going from low + FSR Q to high preset doesn't bring the apply button up, so the high settings don't get applied and merely say they do.

if you have a rx 580 or 590 make sure you also have dual boot windows and linux with mesa driver, because some games are faster on linux and alan wake 2 is playable +30fps on linux

Strix Halo should be just that.. but those will be laptop-only (unless it's a cut down variant) as they have a 256 bit memory controller (so quad channel in DDR lingo). Not sure if a cut down desktop variant will be entirely enough to mop the floor with an RX 6600, so you might have to wait for DDR6 before that happens. The limiting factor of APUs on desktop is the 128 bit (dual channel) memory subsystem..

A) What the heck is triple sided tape? I know double sided tape, so where's the last side?!? :P B) All Minisforum PCs have VESA-100 spacing holes in the bottom, so you don't need tape if your TV or monitor has VESA mounting on the backside. I've built many Intel NUC and Minisforum setups for customers who need something unobtrusive at the front desk, or simply don't have big computing needs. Not too long ago I overhauled an entire accounting department, with 20 bean counters, and they were all completely mind-blow how these little things were so much faster than their old i5 2500k systems (with mechanical hard drives!). Tsk, tsk, tsk... I didn't have the heart to tell them that application snappiness is much more down to the NVMe drive than anything else.

@@AncientGameplays "RandomGamingHD", one of your competitors of British origin has just released today (well yesterday now) a review video on it, and we can see that in summary it is an updated "UM790 PRO" where the we replaced the Ryzen 9 7940HS with a Ryzen 9 8945HS (Hawk Point die, so just the NPU part which is more efficient), the BIOS is more complete and it therefore provides an "internal" OCuLink adapter which must be assembled yourself even using an M.2 port (only drawback), the OCuLink port location remaining empty without it (you can see it after the first minute of video)

Depends on the power target and the memory. Mine is in a 45W package on LP-DDR5x 6400 and it is closer to an RX 570 than an RX 580/5500XT/1650S (which are all essentially the same).

The only reason I don't like the multitude of Chinese brands of mini PCs is that there is no support at all! Forget about bios updates, forget about warranty, drivers or something. Buy at your own risk! That's why I stick with Intel NUCs. Yes, performance could be better, but hardware support is more critical. Comparing the BIOS of Intel NUC and Chinese NUC is day and night! Yes, AMD CPUs in those NUCs are much more power efficient and have more performance - a lot more! But Realtek Network Cards... that's a mess. Btw, nice sunglasses, I would like a review of them 😀

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and Descent 3 Online was a thing I was on the world Top 20 ladder. I wasn't aware of the whole latency thing back then, so I didn't disable V-Sync because I didn't like tearing. Which meant 75FPS as that was the max refresh rate of my monitor. I absolutely mopped the floor, walls and ceiling with people running 300+ FPS on the newest CPUs and GPUs. Especially at LAN parties where we were all running at basically 0 ping. If you can't get the frag at 60FPS you can't get it at 144FPS either kiddo. It's not your hardware. It's the hours you sink in, and how good you are at specifically practicing your weak points.

For sure higher fps isnt gonna get you better skills, but TECNICALLY people with higher fps are at an advantage because of less lantency. This is just a fact. But no one stops people from getting good even in suboptimal conditions, because they adapt to that gaming enviroment. @@andersjjensen

I have a question: Can you disable the top M.2 slot in the bios of a motherboard, and see if that will free up those PCIe lanes in the 8700G for the the top GPU slot? Or does it just not work that way?

People make due with what they have. I grew up poor, so old second hand hardware was the norm. Today I can get exactly what I please, but I haven't forgotten what it was like. People who are running RX 580s today, and repasting them twice a year, while having "a summer overclock" and "a winter overclock" for stability will defend it to the day it dies... because it's what they have.

@@andersjjensen this. I clean my PC regularly and undervolted the card to last a long time. I upgraded my 2600x to a 5700x3d and now am waiting for RTX 5000 to release since I need a graphics card for AI. But for what I currently do, the RX 580 is still serving me well, no need for an upgrade. Besides, current GPU are expensive whilst offering 4 year old performance (7800XT to 6800XT for example).

The sponsor is awesome and their service is good (tested it myself), they have those options as a "fall back" or something I guess, but they'll update it soon. The 20 and 30 dollars options are actually great, and those are Canadian dollars btw, not USD

i'm with you on this one.. this guy is the definition of AMD Fanboy. FSR 3.1 is gurbage even at 4K while DLSS is really good even at 1080p.

@@xfreejack001x I'm not really a gamer anymore, but I figured I'd put it to the test. At work we have 1080p, 1440p and 4k monitors in 27", so I did a comparison (this was before the release of FSR 3.1, btw) at the exact same viewing distance. All with the latest version of DLSS at the time, and whatever FSR 2.x the game was shipping with. This is my conclusion on a 7 game test: 1080p Quality: DLSS looks like shit. FSR looks like putrid moldy shit. Adjusting other settings always gives a better result, on both, for the same performance uplift. Even if just using the preset levels. 1440p Quality: DLSS looks marginally better or marginally worse than just dropping a preset level down depending on the game. FSR looks slightly worse than dropping a preset level. But for both I could still get a better result with manual settings tuning to the same performance level. 4k Quality: DLSS is borderline magic. I need to come artificially close to see the difference. FSR looks decent enough though. Better than adjusting other settings. And far better than dropping a preset level. What i WILL however give Nvidia: DLAA, despite the ~10% performance hit over TAA is ALWAYS worth it. This is their true gem. Drop some shadow setting from Ultra to High to get the performance back if needed. I never liked the TAA instability, and will chose MSAA x8/x16 if available, but DLAA is effing MINT. But the whole upscaling idiocy is for people who can't adjust settings AND buy the highest end cards... Both are usable at 4k if you just want to select Ultra and Quality upscaling and is willing to pay for the privilege. TL;DR: The only "gurbage"(?) here is your last statement, and the only fanboy here is you. It's obvious that you never tried a side by side comparison.
