Wasn’t he a pacemaker? Do they even get medals if they somehow end up finishing on the podium? Has it ever happened?
@Kalidascorp
@Kalidascorp 4 месяца назад
@@lupsik1 They get medals, as they're registered the same way as other participants. One duty of a pacemaker is to make sure race tactics don't go out of control. Sometimes racers will deliberately go much slower, to conserve energy for the last leg of the race, and will only make sure they keep up with the leader. The leader, knowing this, also slows down to conserve energy. After all, their final time doesn't matter, just coming in first matters. Eventually they all move at a snail's pace, waiting for the final sprint. A pacemaker prevents this tactic because their whole point is to set a decent final time, even if they don't win. Now the other racers can't slow down that much, because if they want to win they'll need to set a better time than the pacemaker. If the pacemaker can't win, then this pressure doesn't exist. The racers would just ignore the pacemaker. And yes, there are many instances of pacemakers winning their races.
@studentofsmith
@studentofsmith 4 месяца назад
@@Kalidascorp Interesting! I didn't even know this was a thing. I assume it's not just theoretical either, that this phenomenon actually occurs in longer races that don't have a pacemaker.
@Kalidascorp
@Kalidascorp 4 месяца назад
@@studentofsmith Here is what a typical 1500m race looks like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5xRpTK9CUKk.html. The start of the race is typically just a jog, and the winner's final time will be very far from their fastest possible time. Here is an ice skating event where one of the racers takes advantage of the slow pace: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qgl1GITk0Js.html. And here is what the start of an Olympics bicycle race looks like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8cL1lXDNSJQ.html. The bicycle race is a bit of a strange case though, as it is head to head, and the first part of the race isn't actually timed. The rules were adjusted to fit the tactics in that case. The leader has a slight disadvantage due to no slipstream, so that's what happens. That's one of the other duties of a pacemaker, to be the leader so none of the "actual" racers get the disadvantage of being the leader.

We had a guy on our high school track team that did the same, but he was our designated decoy. He would intentionally sprint ahead to psych out the other team to think he was our best guy, and the other teams best runner would sprint to catch up to him, which would wear that guy out early. His trick only lasted so long, because once the other teams caught on that he was just a decoy, they stopped chasing him down.

Sectionals, I'm finally in the 800s again. personal best to beat was 2:10. I took off. I knew that I had started too fast, and I could not find the strength to slow down. Before you know it half the race was over, my time being 57s, The time I normally run in the 400s. I knew it was over, because I was still in the 400m mode. I felt like crap towards the end of the race. It almost took twice as long. I've finished with a time of 2:27.
