Anyone who watched the Cowboys and Kellen's use of the 'Empty sets' knew right away what a disaster it was going to be. And shame on Kyle for not knowing NFL history....... 3rd down and Von Miller 3rd down and Aaron Donald..... 3rd down and Chris Jones....... and you dont have a RB/FB for a chip block to buy Purdy time to scamper. I lost most respect for Kyle on this playcall... theres zero excuse for it.
The NFL is fake and rigged. That play is too stupid to explain away. People think NFL can't be rigged or players would talk. They make millions, they ain't talking. I never heard a wrestler say our sport is fake and rigged.
Missed assignment by one of the weak links in the offensive line. The 49ers have drafted some offensive linemen in recent years but they usually have not lived up to expectations.
This is a fair comments about missed PAT; problem is the entire game strategy of both teams would've changed resulting in different plays..........and who knows what may have happened. But the point is also solid in the sense that if it's made; the urgency and offensive strategy of Chiefs would've been different.
I think the blocked PAT was not a factor. It would've made the Chiefs realize they needed 6 to win, which they end up going for (and have a high probability of making) to win it in regulation. They settled for the OT play with the FG because they had confidence that momentum was on their side, and they were catching fire.
As easy as you can say that Shanahan should have called something more straight forward, I can just as easily say that the offensive linemen did not execute the play to a normal standard when you allow defensive linemen in untouched. If you are going to completely miss blocks then any offensive play will be a problem.
Yeah but why get cute down there at that point. CMC fumbling should have been an indication to keep it simple. Also an empty backfield is doing 90% of the job for the defense by taking the deceptive element away from QB and allowing D to focus on pass
Purdy would have needed to make one hell of a side arm throw, cause that DE was assigned to play the passing lane. 3rd SB lose he has for not simply running the ball. Run behind TRENT on that 3&4 in the 4th

That is so painful to watch. Either that was a horrific play call or a complete failure to execute. But it's so simple to look at... And at the very least, what was the right guard thinking? He had one job to make sure Jones didn't get through. All Purdy needed was 2 or 3 seconds in the pocket and he would have hit his target. But yea, that totally cost them the game. Correction, the single most damaging play was the 49er punt returner who lacked the presence of mind to simply collapse on the ball rather than attempt to pick it up after it had glanced off another player even more guilty of poor judgement.
Yes. There are those times when a player needs to think about what is most important at the time and on a punt the most important thing is to catch the ball/get possesion. In that moment he had visions of a return and it cost them dearly. I see that same as Flowers fumble at the goal line, maintaining possesion was more important than scoring. It was going to be 1st and goal, were it 4th down yes dive, but maintaining possesion was the most important result at that time.
man, the punt returner didnt wanted to return at all. THe moron in front of him touched the ball, that became live. He tried to recover and in the spur he rose again. It isnt his fault. It's shannacunt the one that killed this team AGAIN. 3 superbowl played, 0 wins. RG buford was filling in for an injured feliciano and missed the assignment. Look at the guy RG actually blocks, hes blocking the same guy as the LG who is accurately sliding right.
That was happening all day long. The Chiefs were blitz heavy. They should have kept someone in the backfield to pick up the blitzer which would have given Purdy time to find the open receiver.
if only they had a bigger back than CMC who specialized in blocking. it'd be a positive if that back could catch too so there would be option plays for him whenever he was in to keep the D guessing. too bad most teams don't run a big blocking RB anymore. That was the deal killer play. Completely terrible O line defense blocking (as you just showed us). The Chiefs had 9 unblocked blitz plays in this game. It's a miracle Purdy was able to complete as many passes as he did. If we actually get a decent O line on the right side we could take Purdy to even a higher level! PLEASE DRAFT A RIGHT TACKLE!!!!

What happened on that play was Burford #74 wasn't as well-played or practiced as Jon Feliciano, who was hurt 2:28 left in the 4th quarter. Hence Feliciano's replacement Mr. Burford didn't know what he was doing and let K.C.'s Jones waltz right in to pressure Purdy. That cost us the touchdown in overtime..
absolute brutal error ... but but but, is a game of errors like any game --- niners gave up 139 yards on 2 KC drives to tie & win the game (64 +75 = 139) with NO STOPS === many brutal errors on defense !!! ... perhaps next year ???

Totally agree. Jones was unhindered, I’ll bet he was as surprised as anybody. Jennings is going to win his route if he has another second to work with. He looks back and the ball is already out of reach. Purdue really had no chance, if he tried to roll or run Jones was gonna swallow him up, he did right. Possibly if he doesn’t throw so far Jennings can make a play on the ball but that’s asking a lot. Burford, #74 just can’t allow Jones past him. I’d love to know what the actual play call was…

@@ConcernedNinerFan As a Chiefs fan, I agree. They didn't go smash mouth enough. Shanahan must not have studied the film on probably the best defensive backfired in the NFL. He underestimated their shutdown ability, and the fact that they have done it all year. The formula for beating great defensive backfields, is to open holes, and force them to come up to make tackles on running backs. Then you can start throwing on them after they get tackle weary. It's a tried and true formula.

The not converted 3rd and 4 after the 2 minute warning, with similar blown protection was more critical. With that conversion, and perhaps 2 more 1st downs, you can score the winning field goal with no time left for Mahomes, just like the Chief's did to Philly last year.
They cheaped out on the O line and it cost them a SB. Burford came in for Feliciano who got injured in the game. But he's got plenty of experience as a starter on this line so no excuse really. There were a number of plays that cost us - Mccloud not falling on the ball on the botched punt return, not kicking the ball in OT, man it was amateur hour out there.

What about the 3 and 5 pass play before they kicked the field goal? If they would have run the ball, that would have forced KC to take 1 of their 2 time outs left. This would have helped because to drive the length of the field on 1 time out opposed to 2 could have made it more difficult for them to tie the game and send it to OT. My view, but doesn’t matter now.

I agree. Something I saw before the game was the lineup of the two OL, and as soon as that game went into overtime I knew the Chiefs had it in their hands. If that extra point hadn't been blocked it may well have gone the other way.
Great analysis, when watching the game live I just thought dang they got to Purdy quick, but you pointed out exactly why. In addition, I think they should have tried to score a TD on 4th down as well.

Glad you went over this play! This was one of my biggest disappointments! I think they could've even done a Run play or some kind of trick play like they did with the first TD. What would've been beautiful is if they did a QB sneak where Purdy could run it in for the W. Anyway, it was a great game! At least it was exciting with 2 of the best teams!!

The difference in this game, and all season, was the Chiefs’ defense, especially the secondary. The Chiefs are the most complete team in football right now. This video got it right - the RG blew his job either through his own fault or the fault of the scheme.

I'm a Niners fan. I wouldn't call Kyle "one of the best play callers in the game". Not by a long shot. Every game there are plays that I have to scratch my head over, usually too conservative. You're so right on the blocking scheme on that play. The Niners had enough blockers. Someone really screwed up on that play, in two places. They spend so much time practicing and are paid so much, yet can't they get this junk down? WTF? And OMG, the offsides and holdings. Don't get me started. A ref could call a penalty on any play if he wanted to. It's like players have too much to think about and forget the snap count, over and over. Every time I see a holding call I want to put their hands inside boxes and lock them. DON'T GRAB ONTO A DEFENDER'S SHOULDER PADS!!! That play is a good example of no matter who the quarterback is, he won't be successful if the O-line doesn't block.
I’m not a Niners fan but you being a Niners fan is biased, you probably watched every game and rue every missed opportunity all year. Every team had the same mistakes. The Niners did a great job all year. KC was just a little bit better in the end.

That was a severe mistake. If you don't know where the ball is, find it before getting into the danger zone. KC didn't catch a punt with their ankle, Niners did. Play a little smarter and the Niners win that game. Though I hesitate to say that about any game where you face off against Mahomes.
Three or four different players on the team got hurt. That’s what caused them. And the referees not calling a single holding penalty on the Kansas City offense of line. I can’t mention how many times Bosa was tackled, and nothing was called. But, they had to get it for Mahomes because they want to take a lot of the emphasis away from Tom Brady.
I agree the refs swallowed their whistles while Bosa got tackled play after play. And the right guard on this play was a sub who completely blew his blocking assignment. The chiefs were going to be handed this game by the league’s refs unless they got their asses handed to them. Mahomes and Travis Swift had to be THE Super Bowl story!

What almost caused the Chiefs the Super Bowl was the missed call by the officials on the 49er’s line man being illegally downfield on the “flea flicker” touchdown pass.
Chief's also had a man illegally down field on their winning TD play. They say there could be a penalty in almost every play if it was scrutinized close enough.

Excellent breakdown and analysis. But let’s face it, when you analyze a negative outcome after the fact it comes down to second guessing. If the right guard doesn’t blow the assignment and blocks Jones, Purdy completes the pass and 49ers win. Then Shanahan would be getting the same genius accolades as Andy Reid. Same thing with his decision to take the ball first in OT. They got a field goal and if they then would have stopped Chiefs the game would have been over. Or even if Chiefs got a field goal, 49ers could have won on their next possession.
What I liked the most was how you said that they should stay with the basic. Then you immediately went into a rather involved explanation on how to rework the situation but your solution still required the exact same player to block 95 (who didn’t). In the end, the failure belongs to the player who messed up his assignment. If he messed up THAT assignment, he could mess up your suggested assignment and 95 still comes through.
It easy to what you would've done after the fact. The fact is kyle sent in a play and everyone knows their individual assignment and is expected to get it done. If Burford sry ass block Chris Jones just for 1 second Jennings scores a td which would've forced kc to go for 2 if they would've scored a td.

This play gives off Joe Burrow getting sacked by Aaron Donald vibes. wide receivers across the field wide open, but an offensive line that in this case blunder the protection scheme.
Excellent analysis. Leaving Jones unblocked on that play is just inexplicable. Fumbling the punt return late in the 3rd, and leaving Mahomes with a one play touchdown didn't help their chances either.
Do you ever recall what KS did to Atlanta Falcons in their 1st SB. He screwed up with so many bad calls in the last 6.5 minutes of the game. Worst one was a 3th down pass action instead of running the ball to set up a sure put away field goal. Falcons in that year had the best field goal kicker in NFL.
Kyle shanahan will be one of the best coaches that will never win a Super Bowl. Brock Purdy will also be one of the QBs that will never win a Super Bowl.
This happened TWICE on 3rd Down. 1st was McDuffie Blitzing on 3rd Down and this play. The O-Line was not in SYNC most of the game especially when Feliciano went down. Injuries were HUGE in the 2nd Half to Dre Greenlaw & Feliciano. Absolutely contributed to broken COVERAGES in the 2nd Half.
No what cost them the game was mahomes...if he's the last to touch the ball and it's up to him to win the game...well I think his record in play offs is 7 - 0.. Don't think anyone in football will forget when all he had was 13 seconds...

When they got past happy in the third quarter instead of running the ball and using up clock against the best quarterback in football which I think you have to blame on Kyle is as much as anything else why we lost the game

Wait a minute! I say again Shanahan is a good coach but not a great one. Evidence is that he’s been to three Super Bowls and hasn’t won one. Burdord blew it but that wasn’t the only reason they lost the game. Purdy missed a lot of receivers wide open. McCloud not jumping on the punt and so on and so on. Kyle just made it difficult on something so basic.Just run the ball and you’ll get the td or first down.He just over thinks the basic calls.This is up there with worst call in a superbowl next to Pete carrol throwing the ball when you have lynch as your running back at the 1 yard line.
