When I was a kid in the early 70s, we had a pond across the street that harboured a snapper of this size- or larger. It was almost mythical to us. We could only see it very occasionally, if were stealthy and approached the pond carefully. Then one day we found out someone had come and removed it, "because they were afraid it would hurt us kids...". We found out later that someone just wanted a stuffed 'trophy'. We were devastated...
@@geoffhart Thanks, but I'm not a friend of nature. I am a functioning part of nature itself. Love and respect for all that surrounds me, is my nature. Nature makes life a beautiful and wonderous endeavor...
Awesome,I haven't seen one in a few years. THAT'S the reason I no longer handfish in certain rivers and creeks in Texas( no more muddy banks--stick to fast flowing clear with big rocks). All it takes is one encounter to learn about a whole nuther level of pain. Ever had a camshaft fall in cold weather and smash just the fingernail tip end of your middle finger, feels like a million foot pounds of pain concentrated in the tiniest spot. Well, that x10. No way,I don't want no more of that🤪
When I was younger I used to noodle in OK with an old man that was missing 2 fingers. He lost them to an alligator snapper noodling the muddy banks of the North Canadian river.
In late 70's I rescued one almost this size. It was walking across I-80 in Parsippany, NJ. Let it go at a nearby protected lake. Took it home to show my wife and seven year old son before release. Powerful jaws, it cracked an oak shovel handle. Neighbors said I was crazy, ha! They were correct 🤪
I drive I-80 daily in Parsippany...I imagine it was different in the 70s because no animal could survive on that highway today. I would never have guessed a snapper being there.
The car would have gotten the worst of it, battle tank like that! Seriously, thanks for your good deed, taking a risk for wildlife is noble, well done!

I did. We caught crawdads. In a small creek. I guarantee you if we knew an alligator snapping turtle was in there and someone turned it loose where our kids played that boy would have issues. We love our kids more than a turtle that would take their foot off. But that's just good parents in the country. What's your excuse? Go swimming in the quarry with cotton mouth snakes? We shore didn't allow that. Why do hate children so much?
The problem...superstar...is SOME parents would let their kids play there and had no idea some virtue signaling puke would catch and release an alligator snapping turtle where children play or might play...in the damn city. You are a dangerous fool.
I guarantee you have never caught a regular snapping turtle much less an alligator snapper. Or even seen one. It's a fucking alligator with a shell with no teeth but a beak that will cut through the toughest boot you can buy and shit your toes out it's ass before you bleed out.

Way cool! Thanks for the video. I found one like this once while out squirrel hunting. It was crossing a sand bar in a small stream. Its head was as large as a football and its tail was as big around as my thigh. No telling how old these monsters are! Surprising that they survive in such small creeks and streams. Great job in chronicling them!
A survivor from the age of dinosaurs - along with crocodiles. Awesome beast! Biggest one that I have ever seen in person, was from a small creek in a farm field in the middle of Wisconsin, and it filled a washtub. It was caught near the area where my cousins and I swam on hot summer days after working.
You think being tricked into eating something with a metal hook is from respect? He put it back, *big deal* You don't know how much pain the animal is in, or distress, or that future infection might set in from the hook being deeply embedded, as his whole weight is pulled by that hook, tearing skin, causing damage. After the hook is taken out there is an open, untreated wound... HELLO. Why is it even necessary to disturb nature, just to then walk away having done untold damage? IDIOCY.

Thank you for rescuing and relocating this amazing beautiful creature. Living in Florida many are rescued and returned to their habitats after every big storm.
They didn't relocate the turtle at all. They just put it back where they found it. I thought the video was about them catching it and relocating it to somewhere better.
Woah... That's a scary beast to hook into. Beautiful creature though, it just LOOKS so pre-historic... which of course it is :O) Total respect for you guys in the way you care for all your catches. I've become addicted to your videos !

I live in Minnesota and two years ago I saw a snapper like this ambling down the shoulder of a road between two lakes, it was about the size of a trailer wheel around...never seen one that large before. It wasn't an alligator snapper, but just a regular snapper.
About 15-20 years ago there was a snapper blocking traffic on 169 southbound (just south of 494). We didn't know what the problem was until we got close. He wasn't moving, just sitting in the middle of the right lane, mouth gaping at the cars trying to go around him. We pulled over and luckily I had a 5 gallon bucket with me, because I wasn't sure if I could have lifted him by the tail. We managed to get his front end into the bucket (shell just fit), and then carry him like that over to the nearby water's edge (Anderson Lakes). Stayed well away from his mouth, but he almost managed to scratch me with his claws (good reach and pretty quick with those).
I stopped and saved a snapping turtle coming out of a limestone quarry she was covered with limestone slurry and headed across a busy road. I pick her up and took her down the road to the kishwaukee river and let her go.
You seem plenty strong enough bud! I've seen those beast snap a huge branch like it was nothing. They are strong, amazing survivors. I admire your concern for animals and our environment. Peace
Man! I just moved one out of the road in the 40-60 lb range not too long ago and it was NOT happy. Those things are just pure muscle and instinct and demand respect! I can't imagine trying to pull one out of the mud to unhook it..
That is some prehistoric beast your ditches all seem to be from jurassic Park! Well done on the release and getting your hook back 👏 Once again I am amazed at your ability to find these myths from muddy ditches

Beautiful snapper! Great job getting that hook out. I caught a snapping turtle on a top water lure by accident. Not an alligator snapper. Luckily when it hit my lure and dove down it hooked itself in the back right leg. I was able to get the hook out rather easily. The size was about as big as large frying pan. What a rush though.
I'm so glad you released it. That old gal may be 50, 60, even 80 years old, and they have homes. People think they are making them safe by moving them to a safer place, but they are in more danger trying to find their way back home. Even box turtles will endlessly search for its home if released in strange territory.
That's a gorgeous alligator snapper! We still have a few in my neck of the woods. I'd say probably 65-80 yrs old, and endangered. Bravo, gentleman! Bless you for letting her go!

I have caught turtles just like these in the past, but haven't seen one in at least 12 years. Probably human interaction is unfortunately causing these beasts to die out. :(
We don't have Alligator Snappers, but I've definitely noticed a decline in common snapper populations since I was a kid. I've found tons of them with cracked shells and even bullet holes in their shells...people definitely kill them in any water that attracts swimmers. I think most of them get taken out at road crossings during mating season. There's not really much space left for them to breed.
They’re so incredible! There was one in a small lake in Fullerton, CA a few years ago probably double that size. Can’t remember how old they said it was, but we came from all over OC to take a look at it.
@@mrjon75 it’s obviously not native to our area. Most likely released there as young and grew to such an enormous size over years. We all saw it as it was removed from the water to show its immense size and “beak” truly an amazing creature.
Wow!! That was just awesome. Thank you for that, she was such a spectacular creature and probably really old. We don't see anything like that in my mother country, Canada.
I caught a giant snapping turtle on a line when I was younger in upstate NY, Catskill region. River named “10 Mile River.” Very creative lol. At least when we swam The whole length we knew exactly how far we’d gone. Heh.... Turtle wasn’t quite that big, but I’d still say around 50-60lbs. Anyway, I tried so much but couldn’t get near to get the hook out unfortunately. Almost took my fingers a few times and I couldn’t find any pliers since I usually used my fingers to dehook the fish, mostly walleye, perch, sunny, catfish, bass etc.l the usual North East corridor waterway. The line ended up snapping and it jumped back in the water. Plus, it wouldn’t let me near that scary mouth. Still feel bad I couldn’t get the hook out.
That happens more time then none. Back home my adopted dad told me how people lost fingers and hands from hogging for catfish. When u reach into a hole u never know what lays in it.
@@roromil2441 Thats always a worry. I used to do a lot of fishing but eventually gave up because sticking a hook into a fish will ALWAYS do some damage however small and sometimes its fatal. Pike were particularly vulnerable with exposed gills and a tendency to swallow the bait unless you were very quick. It got to the stage where I was painfully aware of hooks left in lost fish etc. I do miss the connection with nature ( normal wild camping is difficult in the UK and often illegal) and still have my old gear but my conscience wont allow me to use it. I feel sorry for these turtles if they are deliberately being fished for.
Kitty Corner - They probably used some really Long Needle Nose Pliers and perhaps if not long enough put a piece of wood between the jaws to keep them from closing down while they quickly removed the hook.. You have to be brave and fast...
Hey guys, really cool video. What a beautiful catch & thank you for letting her go. Wish all guys were like you. Guys with compassion for animals is amazing. 👌☮
We have big snappers slowly crossing the busy highway every year (along the Mississippi River in Wisconsin). Lots of people stop and help them across - some purposely try to hit them. Between the snappers and the painted turtles, we probably helped a dozen across last year.

An old Bull Terrier of mine [not the one you're looking at currently] walked up to "a rock" on the beach in our conservation area to have a sniff. It was a motionless 30-40 pound snapping turtle and it gave him a pretty good nip. He jumped six feet in the air and wouldn't go near rocks for the rest of his life. He was the sweetest Bully, but so dumb compared to the other six we've had. Seeing them is a real link to prehistory. Thankfully, they're doing quite well in our area due to local conservation efforts, including volunteers who construct protective cages around the eggs and visit regularly to ensure the hatchlings can make it to the lakes and wetlands.
How many times have you guys hooked yourself or hit yourself with those lures? Serious question! Looks kinda wild the way they come flying back at you after such hard strikes!

That turtle was likely quite old, possibly older than you. Glad you treated it with respect and released it without harm. Be careful those jaws and beak are known to posses enough force to snap a broom handle.
Hey Ty I’ve seen you catch several snapping turtles but I’ve never seen you show how to safely take the hook out. If you could show this it would be helpful. I just cut my line when I catch them and feel bad for leaving the hook in but I don’t know how to safely remove it. Thanks
yea, That was the part I wanted to see as well. My guess is he just cut the line, I have worked with a few snapping turtles that size and I can't see how he got it out, just let it rust and fall apart.
