Rather than ban, educate. We had typing classes for work, personal use in the 70s-90s. Why not subjects on new technology for new generations.

yes you need to educate for sure! but the issue is the child will still see adult content/be able to talk to strangers. As minors are immature, it will still be difficult for them to stay safe even if educated. If you want your child online, then at least let it be on a family computer where it can be monitored. But even then i remember talking to adults in kids games when i was a kid! So I can imagine giving a smart phone to a minor would be so much unsafer.

Florida has passed a bill that limits youth access to social media for anyone 16 and younger.Can and should be done.I also think that as a parent ,if you are paying for your child’s phone and data plan you absolutely have the right to access all their social media accounts until they turn 18.Parents need to start parenting and not trying to be their child’s friend.

Parents, guardians, other adults - please don't buy smartphones for children. Where children are buying for themselves in person: shop people don't sell to them. Ask for ID. How hard can it be to stop most children from getting their hands on a smartphone?

I'm surprised NHS uses thick fabric. I thought they were cutting back. Thin fabric must be cheaper?

Adults don't want to take responsibility and accountability for their own children so let's just ban everything. Giving children unsupervised access to social media is ridiculous.

you can't supervise a child on their phone at all times, that doesn't make sense. You can obviously try to, but it will be a lot harder than a shared computer in a family room. There is no reason to give your child a smart phone. If they must have a phone, then give them a basic phone. Why do you want children to have access to social media?? what's wrong with having an age limit?

Absolutely they should be banned. Kids can use normal phones for emergency calls. The problems that are caused by smartphones to children, not just teenagers, but little toddlers is just not worth it. I say this as a kindergarten teacher who sees the impact of smartphones, ipads, ... on little kids where the addiction to those devices starts 😪

My friends 12 year old actually has a phone with no internet at all, just a normal phone where she can text or call her dad. I think she has it right

The problem isn't the phones so much as the Internet. If kids had restricted Internet it would be safer, problem is a lot of schools now use technology and Internet to set homework for students. But if they stopped that it would be better.

give your teenager a basic phone so they can call, but they don't need a smart phone.

@@DEC19775 No, children shouldn't have access to the internet and social media unless supervised. from my own experience, I grew up with the internet (on computers) and I was talking to adults in kids games, creative websites and was exposed to things that were not at all appropriate. You're putting children in danger by giving them a smart phone so they can access social media/internet privately. There Is really no need too, let children have fun and play in other ways.

It's more damaging for a child to have a smart phone in comparison to adults. Yes adults should be off social media and youtube more, but they also use phones for work and socialising. i was a child growing up with the internet and it was very easy for me to talk to strangers, see things i wasn't meant to see and that was just from computers. A smart phone makes it a lot easier to be in danger.

@@aurora6920 Parents should do their jobs and protect their kids for once. So many problems would be solved if the parents just paid attention to who their kids were talking to and what was being said. You wouldn't leave a child alone with dangerous tools or chemicals so why is technology any different.

"You wouldn't leave a child alone with dangerous tools or chemicals " - but you're saying you would leave a child alone with a smart phone, as you think kids should have smart phones. pretty dangerous. Also when I was 13 my teacher and parents weren't watching me 24/7 when on a computer, it will be even harder with smart phones to watch over together.
