To be fair with the predictable story, several times, it felt intentional. It's kinda like how so many people got after Megamind for its cliches when it first premiered despite the film constantly acknowledging them.

I felt that way as well and it would make sense considering that the main characters are stereotypes of "scary" animals. You could also see their roles in their heists as stereotypes for characters in other heist movies.

Reminds me of the cornetto trilogy, being over the top satires of different film genres while also crafting stories which make fun of and also pays tribute to what makes different films of said genre so great in the first place. Also the relationship between snake and wolf in the bad guys also feels similar to the bond between Pegg and Frost's characters in the cornetto trilogy in my opinion. Also I think the bad guys is a 9/10. Maybe I'm just biased because I love the cornetto films which blends into why I love the bad guys do much, but I think it's because of the animation, humour and character interactions (especially between Wolf and Diane) that makes the film fantastic to me.

Tbh the whole predictability of the entire film was worth it because it has the freshest ending I've ever seen in a kid's "Villain to Hero" film. Megamind, Shrek, The fucking Grinch are all films that end with the redeemed villain now being a beloved hero and everyone celebrates them (in the form of the dreaded Dance Party Ending in the former two cases) The Bad Guys deals with it so much more maturely: they're not celebrated, not even forgiven, they go to prison for the crimes they still committed (even if they have such good behaviour that a year later they're already out) and in the end, they have no riches, they have no popularity, just each other, Diane and the cat (the _genuine_ friends they made by turning good) and just the good feeling that comes with being a hero, because those are the things that actually matter. I loved the ending so much, as i loved the rest of the film

My thoughts exactly, when Mr. Wolf said it was okay that they be arrested I literally did a double take in the theatre LOL I too liked how it didn’t go down the cliched “all is forgiven and good route”. Yes, Marmalade got busted and exposed but I too liked how the gang didn’t try to get out of going to prison and were content with receiving the consequences of their past actions even though yes, their sentences got reduced for good behavior I felt that sent a very positive message to always take responsibility for your actions

the film sets up the idea of being good so that people can like you and they won't have to live as feared criminals. It then goes to subvert that by making the guy who brought the idea up be the twist villain. Meanwhile the governor says "don't do it for them, do it for you" And ultimately the bad guys don't get redeemed in the public's eye but become good citizens despite that.

This is why I would recommend Disney Channel Descendants for Animat to review - it feels like a much better live-action reimagining of the Disney Animated Canon than Once Upon a Time or any of their live-action remakes because it aims for the same general audience as the multitude of classic animated Disney fairytale films on which Descendants is based. Descendants knows how to stay true to their style in the form of a Disney sitcom-esque TV movie. At first, I really doubted Descendants because I was skeptical at how good it could be when I knew that Disney's lineup of fairytale characters would not really mix well with a modernized version of themselves, especially because many of the stories Disney animation adapted for film take place in completely different periods, but I learned to suspend my disbelief for unique and avant-garde setup of Descendants. It seemed like not a good idea at first, but very good writing, directing and execution of that silly idea helped Descendants turn out much better than I expected it to be. It is based on the animated fairytale classics we know and love from Disney, but it also finds a smart way to deconstruct their black and white morality when some of the Villain Kids and some of the Hero Kids are not as evil or as good as their parents were, and in the sequels they learn why transitioning from a villain to a hero is not as easy as they may have originally thought it was. Descendants is another movie that deserves to be talked about as much as Megamind and Wreck-it Ralph for telling a good story about a villain protagonist who learns to become a hero. To be honest I'll defend this movie's Twist Villain, and this is coming from a guy that despises most twist villains with all his being. Even putting aside that he makes perfect sense with the movie's theme, I refuse to believe the film really wanted him to be that big a surprise. He is portrayed as so over-the-top good (he. Inverted. Global warming), acts completely arrogant with an insufferable "I like the fame that comes with being good" attitude throughout and he has many moments where the Bad Guys are so hard to handle he goes apeshit. Nah dog this movie knew wed know he was the villain and made him so over the top I really do believe he's parodic, and it helps he's hilariously unhinged once the cat is out.
@dimagg0t
@dimagg0t Год назад
My exact thoughts! I'm not a huge fan of the whole, "wowza the good guy is actually the villain" kind of thing, however this movie manages to weave in that kind of trope to the point where it's actually manageable. Considering this movie’s authentic attention to detail AND direction in how they show the villain, I feel like the point wasn't supposed to be that you weren't meant to predict the villain, but more of a villain where you’re waiting on the build up for the reveal. You know they’re the villain, but its a matter of if the CHARACTERS can figure it out which really keeps you on the edge.

Being someone who has read all the books (so far at least) the movie did a pretty good job or representing the books. For example Mr Snake has always been the member of the group who was never really on board with the whole going good thing. And there were a lot of little details put into the movie that were taken from the book. However the movie did still change a fair bit of things one of the biggest changes being how the only animals are the bad guys Marmalade and Diane fox. While in the book everyone is an animal. Two being how the character Legs from the book was change to a female and their name to Webs . Three being how the Sunnyside testing facility had Guinea Pigs instead of Chickens . But I can see why because the Guinea Pigs had to do with Marmalade's plan so it worked out well. Four is that in the books Diane fox is called Ellen and she is Agent fox not the Red paw. And Agent fox is a good guy while in the movie the Red paw is a thief witch makes her not a good person. And those are just the main changes in the movie and even though there is fair bit of changes it doesn't really make the movie bad. And if I had to give it a rating out of five I would give it three and a half (or four) anyways its a good movie I enjoyed it and now all I have to do is wait for the book series to finally end can't wait!

It may be weird to say but I kinda feel like the weak script actually complements its other aspects. It's kinda the same reason why I feel the first Sonic movie was so successful. Both have incredibly weak plots, with story beats almost copied from every single movie of their genre. However by making the story simplistic yet engaging enough it makes everything else pop out more, an empty canvas for the acting and animation to pull out all the stops rather than held back by some complex narrative. Hell, I'd say even the twist villain (which after reading bits of the recent ART OF THE BAD GUYS artbook, seems even the makers of the movie were well aware of how cliche it was) works in the movie's favor. Making the villain less of the focus and more their actions being the overall real obstacle for the group and their bond.

Now as someone who’s read the books, I honestly have a different perspective on the story and villain in the movie. Now the story is actually pretty true to key moments in the books aside from plot differences such as the heist team setup and reformation process. But because of that, I think they were less concerned with making it predictable as much as they were trying to make it authentic, while making the most of the setup and set-pieces. As for the villain, without spoilers, the books made them apparent VERY early on, and considering this movie’s authentic attention to detail AND direction in HOW they show the villain, I feel its less of a villain you can’t predict and more of a villain where you’re waiting on the build up FOR the reveal. Like YOU know they’re the villain, especially if you’ve followed the story up to this point, but its a matter of if the CHARACTERS can figure it out. As a comparison, its like knowing the state of humans in NieR: Automata if you’ve played NieR before. Its obvious either way whether or not you’ve played it, but its trying more to build up from past knowledge, and being a huge surprise twist to the characters rather than the player.

The wait for a good Dreamworks movie is worth it!! The Bad Guys delivers us an amazing Heist animated comedy film that features humor that is hilarious and high on energy, fantastic animation that has an anime style with a mix of spider verse (I would even say Dreamworks did the better anime styled Cg then what Pixar did), and the characters are absolutely hilariously, the flaws, I had the similar thoughts to yours where the story’s concept is really weak and the certain character is a very predictable twist villains. Heck even the trailers kind of hinted it too. I had a lot of fun when I saw this movie

I definitely enjoyed this movie and I did read the books and they are HILARIOUS! Also a minor spoiler, but the villain was way badder in the book and on top of that he wasn't a guinea pig but rather an alien with a disguise!

Having seen the film twice now, I can definitely say it's among my personal favorite DreamWorks animated films. I thought it was funny, very well animated, had fun characters and a very engaging plot. I don't agree with your points on the film being predictable nor the twist villain being painfully obvious. In fact, I didn't even notice the subtle clues of the twist until the second watch. I think what made the reveal so shocking was the fact that they seemed so genuine and honest in their motives that I never would've suspected them. Still, they made for a great foil for the Bad Guys and were very maniacal and fun to watch. Overall, this was a pretty solid review.
@ivanacurna6577
@ivanacurna6577 2 года назад
Like I said in other videos it's not a twist villain when it's obvious from the start. I already knew Professor Marmelade is the villain when I saw the trailer (and just like I didn't read those books yet too). This guy is pretty much Gideon Gleeful with fur. I think the poor writing it's actually clever. True it is cliché but it so glossed over execution that you are not annoyed. I think it shows how our world sometimes works. No matter how you shows the obvious the others are focused on the outside. That's why this movie works so well. The visuals and especially the characters are the reason why this movie has 87% of fresh tomatoes. It's a cliché classic, you just have to look at it in different angle. I would give writing 7/10 or in fairness at least 6.5/10. The Bad Guys is definitely worth of watch it👍

Spoilers!!!! Anyone else wished that Snake stayed bad? either that or only Wolf went good? I think it would've added not only a twist in the usual happy writing of the story but also a mature and realistic message that not everyone has the capacity to commit to change (snake and possibly the others) and the sacrifices that come with change(only wolf commiting to change) . Not saying it's objectively the better ending but I would've liked it even more if it took the mature/realistic take to balance out the cliche writing.

Recently Dreawmworks has just fell into a pool of mediocrity for me, and I haven’t really enjoyed any of their recent films other than Captain Underpants and Mr. Peabody and Sherman. And even then, that can mostly be chalked up to the source material they’re derived from and still don’t come close to the likes of How To Train Your Dragon or Kung Fu Panda. Nonetheless, with how…well, animated and expressive both this and the new Puss in Boots movie look, I entirely hope that we’ll finally get a new era from Dreamworks where they can make more than generic kiddie flicks again.

[tw: some spoilers but that’s kinda why you’re here for] If we forget the weird side of the furry community, this film is really good! sure, the story is incredibly predictable, but for me, that’s not a reason to say that a movie is bad.. however, there are still some stuffs that made me inconfortable, like the fart and vore jokes and the part after the fight between Mr. Snake and Mr. Wolf gets a little too much,, but I still like the chara design, the animation still and the bean mouth (yes, I like the bean mouth fight me) If there’s any scene that I want to see again, it would probably be the scene when Mr. Wolf yells at the "twist" villain in front of everybody, just so I can see the facial expressions and what he said (because from my memories, he said something like « I’ll kill you » and I thought it was funny to hear that in a kids movie) An other one would be the fight between Mr. Snake and Mr. Wolf, because I dunno…fight? I really enjoyed it and I hope you will too! (the movie, not the concept of fight and hate-)

To be honest, diane foxington from the bad guys is like spamton from deltarune chapter 2 because they both wore glasses and they both make deals and i think i remember the fox girl say now's your chance to redeem yourselves like how spamton says now's your chance to be a big shot. When wolf talked to the fox girl on the stairs it reminded me of the original spamton fight in deltarune and when the fox girl was reavealed to be the crimson paw, it reminded me of spamton neo. Instead of rescuing wolf and the gang, i was expecting the fox girl to fight them instead and have wolf's soul turn yellow and be able to shoot things and wolf and the gang will be in minecarts and the fox girl wants to take wolf's body as a vessal and says he doesn't need his freinds. Wolf and the gang can either beat the fox girl up or break her strings and then they get an item and a shadow crystal and also marmalade is also kinda like queen since they're both selfish. Could someone please do a YTPMV of now's your chance to be a big shot where the fox girl sings now's your chance to redeem yourselves and also with sounds from the movie. Since matpat did a ness is sans theory, i could also see him do a diane foxington is spamton theory. So at the end of the day, the fox girl from the bad guys is like a female version of spamton from deltarune.

I loved the art style and the characters but the story was very predictable and had no particularly unique story beats. I saw the villain's reveal coming from the minute he showed up, I feel lie this one has better potential as a franchise cause the characters were fine. I did feel like the human background characters were really recycled a lot and it's kind of unfortunate that there were no other animal characters in the story.
