I still remember walking out of the theatre after seeing this train wreck and literally just screamed. Mortal Engines was my favourite book as a teen and this movie watched like someone had skimmed the book 20 years ago and then wrote the script without so much as looking at a sparknotes of the plot. I'd gone with a friend who'd quickly skimmed through the book before we went to the cinema and even she hated it, even with none of the history or love that I had she could still recognise that the book was infinitely better and that this movie just didn't even try as an adaptation.

Man, this is weird. For whatever reason, probably something with the way my brain is wired. I can't enjoy books, fictional stories of course. I can read books for information just fine. But if I'm trying to read to get immersed in a story, I can't. I don't know why, I used to be able to. I used to read books all the damn time. Then literally over the course of about a week, I lost that ability. It makes no sense to me, I don't get it. When I try to read a book now I just kinda can't get into it, can't feel the characters, the story, nothing. It's like trying to sleep but you can't fall asleep. Literally lost the ability to read fictional books And because of that, I don't read books anymore at all. So every time a movie comes out that's based on a book, it fails. Usually. Sometimes not. Anyway, I see people like you all the time talking about how the book was so much better, and that the movie was trash because it didn't follow the books. And here I am, a guy who actually enjoyed this movie. I love Sci-fi and this one was absolutely amazing. It's just strange, enjoying a movie and then seeing random people angry saying the book was better

I remember reading this when I was like 12 and the series as a whole. I think the main issue is it was a story meant for kids, that they tried to translate into a more adult film. It made a great book for a younger audience. Not a good movie for a wider audience. Plus there were a lot of important plot details they missed, because it was a rather complex plot that would be impossible to condense into a 2 hour film. Reading the book again after I saw this movie, now 26 I also realized I mostly didn't care for it as much because I wasn't a kid any more. It was mostly nostolgia that made me like it as one of the first real books I ever read. Not that it was a particularly good book.
@robopope7584
@robopope7584 4 года назад
SPOLER ALERT!!! I mean. It was made for everyone, probably more mature. The books, I mean. But I read it at 12 as well. The ending isn’t the happiest, but it is so right. Mortal Engines is an amazing book because it doesn’t care about what the reader wants to happen, it does what would realistically happen. The ending of the series is so sad, but it fits. Mortal Engines isn’t a series about 1-dimensional villains fighting the Mary Sue with a love triangle. It actually makes sense, the villains are some of the best characters in fact. Pennyroyal is a bit of a stereotype, but he’s written well. I love the revenge in the series, as it’s not made to seem amazing. It just seems... like another death. Important characters die just like the unnamed ones. The books have characters who have clear, yet logical motivations. Shrike, who is the villain at first, becomes a hero. Hester is never made out to be a good person and she kills people without care. She doesn’t kill much when Tom is around, however, because she wants him to still love her. The books are better than the movies could ever be. Edit: I also mainly watched the movie because I wanted to see the books given form. But it was pretty bad as a book adaptation. Amazing movie, bad book adaptation.

I think the stars were fine, but the story needed to be better told. You shouldn't have to read the books to understand the movie. A good movie will make you want to go out and read the books. Releasing this in late Feb or March might have been helpful. But perhaps they should have planned it with a smaller budget, more time spent on human interactions than big screaming moving machines and quirkly tech. Hindsight is always 20/20.

@@snaketooth0943 it sounds like the movie had a cool idea, but there's just so much potential lore and background and explanation and world building in their idea. This is the problem of such movies. They build a world which has very awkward art style and they want you to love it just based on trailer. But you have no connection to such worlds, there is no relationship development and if you've seen Howls Moving Castle, it's even worse for you, cause its a ripoff from "your" franchise. So there is basically nothing why you would go and see it, cause everything seems distant, grotesque and unknown. You just don't connect. When it's transformers, Aquaman, regular sci-fi in space, you always have something to follow, something you already know. But this is completely different weird universe you need to learn about and the trailer doesn't do any job in that for you. You are more like "wtf". Yeah, it can be fun, but do you want to risk it? Especially when the only part of the plot which is familiar (a bad guy, mother revenge, strong female character, red scarf...) seems so bad and cliché? Nah. Skip it, steal it.

Actually star power hasn't been a factor in contributing to movie success for the recent years, moviegoers have been getting more and more savvy, if a movie is crap, word of mouth spreads and people are less likely to watch it despite it having star power. Look at Robin Hood for example with Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx, a Wrinkle in Time with Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon, Skyscrapper with the Rock, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms with Keira Knightley. All had super stars, all flops. If a movie sucks, people won't go to see it, regardless if it has stars or not. This isn't the 50s or the 90s, movie stars won't save your crappy movie anymore.

@lwandile dube I literally thought it was based on a Cassandra Clare book. I thought to myself "they're still trying to make that a thing?". The vibe in the trailer is very early 2000s and not in a good way.

Something about the trailers made me not want to go see it. Maybe an issue with suspension of disbelieve or an (ironically) cheap feel?
@strider029
@strider029 5 лет назад
It is because the trailer is stupid, like why would she use a scope just to see a supergigantic city of London moving towards her. It's not cheap, i see a good CGI, but they made it stupid, and peoples eyes hate it when they see something stupid in the trailers, remember trailers are the one that pulls people to watch the movie but when people hates something in the trailer then people will decide not to watch it and just laugh at it.

you should read the books. this movie was a massive disappointment because they changed so much from a brilliant book and made starwars on wheels with brainless characters. It was heartbreaking to see tom and hester turned into angsty hero types
@jonathanjames2162
@jonathanjames2162 5 лет назад
Did they use the entire budget on the CGI? I saw the movie and it wasn’t that great. It looked good, but the story telling was pure garbage. The problem with these big budget movies is that they usually go over and they forget about the actual movie. They forget they actually need a script and great story telling. They bank on their CGI and big budget sets to make up for it. When you look at LoTRs and Harry Potter, they use up their budget without forgetting that they need to tell us wtf is going on lol

I haven't read the source material, but I mostly dislike the forced march of character development throughout. I did think London looked amazing on the screen (especially those huge lions), but the characters were flat and the motivations just boring.
@charleslindeman2169

I think it's because movies like Transformers made so much money just because they looked good and had lots of explosions but had awful stories. This is where the movie and games industries are similar. They see a formulae that worked once, and then it's a gold rush.
@GunmetalRaven

The books are amazing, and I'm not surprised Hollywood fucked the pooch with this. It would've been better as a miniseries instead of the cliffnotes/fanfiction version of the story this movie gives people. The one thing I will say is that they did do a great job of showing what the book describes. :/ It cost a ton of money, but it is a decent enough visual guide. Although Hester's face is supposed to be more jacked than it is. Like one half of it is basically supposed to be so gnarled and unsightly that she always covers it.

Well, you did get a couple things wrong though. The one that stuck out to me the most was saying that Shrike wants to "just kill Hastur" and that supposedly doesn't make any sense ... mate ... Stalkers are made from dead people. The movie literally has a scene where Hastur asks Shrike "So you want to kill me?" "Only for a short time". If anything it's an interesting misinterpretation on Valentine's side who answered the question: "Sure it is a good idea to free Shrike? We don't know what he is going to do" with "I know" when he doesn't Edit.: you got a lot of things factually wrong. Shrike doesn't turn to dust, he is heavily damaged and finally shuts down, a bit surprising but not as ridiculous as you make it out to be; Hastur got the amulet as a child but immediately lost it. Shrike had it until literally a few hours before. Now is this a major convenience? Yes, but it isn't weird that she didn't check it before, she didn't have it; There are similarities between Star Wars and the finale in this movie, you just play it up waaaaay too much. (the comparison to Imperial Stormtroopers as an example is extremely far fledged)
@frozenfreehand1997
@frozenfreehand1997 3 года назад
When I saw this movie on tv, I generally didn't have any feelings towards any of the characters. Even seeing the flashbacks of Shrike when he was dying, I didn't feel anything because I didn't know him enough to care. Hugo Weaving's performance was great though.
