I didn't believe my grams until she proved it. Now, I don't know what happened from childhood cause my hair went on protest while I was adopted and was never the same BUT it does grow fast. The lady is saying real shit tho. I grew up with black sisters in a black family. The ones that wore weave hair didn't retain length at a certain length because of breakage and shrinkage. So they wore weave. The one that had a looser curl pattern her hair she wore natural and never had weave. The difference between now and then is the increased knowledge we have about retaing length via protective styles. Really kinky hair must be placed into a protective style to retain length. That is A-ok and part of what makes us different. If we spread the knowledge instead of using weave to cover insecurty we can be secure in our natural hair. It kinda sucks for black men though because protective styles are very limited, choices being dreads and if your hair isn't ridiculously kinky(like mine) maybe cornrows.

It does grow and also some of us are prone to certain conditions like CCCA which is an alopecia I have that causes my crown to get inflamed and break off. seems genetic and runs on my mom's side. If left untreaded leads to permanent balding. Also my hair grows slower than others as well 1/4 a month. But I also gave up on long hair a long time ago it requires the kind of upkeep and communal care I don't have access to. Im not mad at black women who say our hair doesnt grow. They are just ignorant. Years of chemically and physically burning our hair into submission to look like the 'standard' of professional has damaged so many black womens hair. For GENERATIONS. And we grow and realize that we do not know how to take care of our daughters natural hair bc our mothers were never taught how to take care of ours. Its the trauma of loosing something integral to your culture. Your being. Fortunately, we have social media and the internet. We no longer only have access to the women of our immediate vicinity. Black women all around the world can share what they know. My hair was gorgeous when it was relaxed. Thick, full and a bit past shoulder length, but it would not grow any longer. I grew up hearing that my hair was 'good' hair bc i have Indian in my family several generations back. 😒 that my hair was 'long for a black girl' and was asked to part and pull my roots to prove that it was mine. (From white ppl no less) It wasn't until i was in college that i learned that natural hair didnt have to look like Florida Evans. And the curls that i saw on some women, did not come from a mixture of a different race. I can just be black and have beautiful, long, curly hair. My hair is now natural and longer than it ever has been before, down my back. Its thick and voluminous and defies gravity like magic. 😍 and my grandmother STILL to this day, puts her hands in my hair and laments about how my hair used to be so pretty and then ask me, 'but what happened?'. Side note, my grandma is a wonderful generous person who has always treated me lovingly, but she has A LOT of internalized racism. Its hard to hear sometimes. 😔

i get the first lady. We also cannot just say black people struggling with their hair are ignorant. I am black, coming from many generations of PURE black. Just black all the way. MY Hair doesn't really grow😢. My aunts hair was shoulder length and that was the longest i have seen in my family. I take care of my hair. i hvnt used heat or chemicals for over 10 years. I do protective styles. My hair food is made from fruits in my own backyard- moringa and avocado. MY hair still doesn't grow much. I stretch my hair by braiding it out the night before. I have done literally everything i believe to be good for my hair and it still won't grow much. I'm from the villages in SA, so you know we grew our own food and keep livestock. My diet isn't the issue. But it still won't grow much. So yeah... I understand that first lady.

@Bexx74 2 месяца назад
@@Jubileerivombo1 your experience is very valid. And many women go through that. Im sorry your hair doesnt grow. You say its the same with your family. Perhaps genetics? This certainly doesnt make you ignorant. (Obviously you're not!) the issue i have is when black women say that ALL black womens hair doesnt grow. Or that if it does, its because we are mixed with something. There are individuals of other ethnicities who struggle to grow their hair similarly to you. Your hair issues are not a function of you being black. Imo.
@stephaniefarrant
@stephaniefarrant 2 месяца назад
@Jubileerivombo1 I don't know if this has been a factor in my hair growth, but my hair grows very quickly and I don't use products (like hairspray) or tie my hair up/braid tightly for more than a few hours at a time. I most often have a loose bun or my hair down. I also don't overwash it. When I was younger, I got some tight braids done on one side of my scalp, and those braids stayed in for weeks. In the end I unbraided them because they got messy rather than because of growth, and the hair on my other side was longer. Hairdressers always compliment me on my hair, not because it's styled or coloured beautifully but because of its health and fullness, and I'm always surprised because I do so little with it. But maybe that's the key to healthy hair? I'm not sure. I thought I'd mention it anyway as you seemed upset with your situation. Sometimes I think these things come down to finding what personally works for your body. I just got lucky that I stumbled upon what works for my hair. If only I could as easily stumble upon what works for my bingo wings! 😂

Please keep in mind that a growth rate of 0.5 inches/month is an average and possibly an average based on straighter hair. Apparently there was a study that indicated that the average rate for the black people studied was 0.2 inches/month. I know black women who've had tailbone length hair since they were kids and I know black women who struggle to make a ponytail with their hair. There are RU-vidrs who receive harsh comments under their videos like why isn't your hair growing after all these years? Different growth rates exist. Different breakage setbacks exist. We just have to find the right combination that suits our hair needs.

@eb11a17
@eb11a17 5 месяцев назад
I wonder if in the study whether both the straight "white" hair and the coily/curly "black" hair were straight. Because you really may have a harder time determining length with coily/curly because of the texture and shrinkage. People should remember that some studies (and practices) are not equal between Blacks and Whites. For example, pulse oximeters. The little things they put on the finger of a person going to surgery. It measures the blood oxygen levels so they can be sure a person has enough oxygen during surgery. Guess what, they are not as accurate for BP or others who have deeper skin color...but they still use them as if the inaccuracies don't matter. My point is just because it was in a study doesn't mean that they take into account the beautiful differences of BP. You should watch "who" is providing the study and if they are potentially working off of biases or miseducation. Remember they have said that BP have lower intelligence, higher pain tolerance, and a whole bunch of other derogatory and harmful things which we know are not true....in studies.

Love your take on this. I agree for the most part, but I will say that my hair type is so thick and curly that even though I’ve been caring for it consistently for years, it just doesn’t look like it’s growing at all past my shoulders. Yet when I straighten it, it’s nearly down past the middle of my back. just crazy what different hair types can do.
@leebliss3622
@leebliss3622 3 месяца назад
What do you mean? you agree for the most part? you’re just proving her point, your hair type is growing but because of the tight curls it springs up and looks shorter, so it’s not that your hair care routine isn’t working or that it’s not growing it’s just naturally so tightly wound and probably a flatter hair shaft if that’s the case, that it’s giving the illusion of shorter hair. If you want your natural hair to be long without straightening ~ just stick with it, it will keep growing. Remember though, everyone has a different “stop” length for hair, you know how our arm hair and eyebrow hair grows a certain length and then stops? the hair on our heads does that too, and every individual persons is a different length! mines super super long, I’m growing it now cos I wanna see how long I can get it.

White woman here, and I can guarantee that even among "other races" the hair texture determines how easy it is to keep long hair. I have wirey hair that doesn't style well, but it can keep length because it doesn't damage easily. I have a friend who's hair is fragile and fine, so it breaks and its easier to keep it short, but it keeps styles well. We both have the same kind of curl, and we're the same race, but our hair is still different. I think the woman in the first video had been told those things her whole life by her mother/grandmother, but never stopped to consider that her hair is a genetic trait, not a race trait.

I didn’t process that some black women might feel some kind of shame around the way their hair coils and shrinks (in terms of hair length). I never perceived coiled hair (with “shrinkage”) as less feminine, just a different hair type: A hair type that is much more voluminous than my own. My own hair type comes out straight, flatter, and appears “longer”. (I’m actually still processing whether or not “shrinkage” is actually an insecurity some women face.. But curls are beautiful.)

The first woman said “most” blk women, not “all”. Afro hair (type 4) is the most challenging hair type to maintain. It takes lots of patience & effort to take care of. It is indeed fragile & easily susceptible to breakage. Which is why protective/stretched styles are necessary to retain length. What she doesn't know apparently, is how to take care of her natural hair...but she knows how to put on an old matted blonde wig on her head every morning

The more freedoms we have to be ourselves, produce our own products and eat food that works for our bodies, the more this narrative will disappear. All of our hair is beautiful and I’m glad to see us growing despite the negativity.

I don't understand why black women hide their beautiful hair under wigs of straight hair. Their hair is so gorgeous, so amazing. They should display it proudly.

To protect their hair and to not use daily heat on their hair...they say it all the time on youtube and social media and because if they are like me and have long hair they may want a bob on Monday without cutting their hair short...wigs ate like accessories for many women....hope you understand more now

Wow stating facts is now considered insecurity. Scientifically black hair grows at a slower rate. Of course there are things one can do to better retain length. It does not make one self hating or insecure to state this fact. Long hair does not improve your worth or beauty.

I think most people aren't listening to understand, their listening to reply. The lady didn't really express her point well, but the sentiment of her video does hold some merit. 4c hair especially doesn't grow downward like people with other hair types because it hides away to prevent the person on whose head it's on from having a heatstroke because most black people with this type of hair mostly live in (or originate from) very hot, humid areas. I mean how many other races of people are taking hours just to detangle their hair to avoid breakage, having to keep their hair stretched and in “protective styles” for hours just to show off their length? That's one of the reasons I got locs. Ever since I was a kid I've always loved the look of braids and never really cared for other styles because of how carefree it allowed me to be with my hair. When I grew up and realized that locs could give me look of braids without the whole take down process, it was a game changer for me❤

I agree. I don’t think the first woman is self-hating, just misinformed. Our hair grows at the same rate as other races but is also more prone to breakage in its shrunken state. Which is why protective styles are a go-to method to retaining length.

Those "scientific" studies were done on people whom most of which (not all) didn't know how to properly take care of their hair, so their hair wasn't healthy. Our hair isn't some rare breed that can't grow like everyone else's; it can grow just as much, and honestly, it's that type of mentality that's the problem (in my opinion). The thing is, you don't even have to have a bunch of crazy methods or do any of these 5-hour wash-day routines; you can wash and condition your hair just like anyone else and deep condition/pre-poo your hair occasionally and grow your hair. What's funny is, most of the women I know with long afro-textured hair don't even do anything special, they just know how to care for their hair and properly hydrate it, lessening the chance of breakage. And it's not just "genetics" either, because there are remedies you can adopt to speed up hair growth (not anything mainstream, as most of these remedies can work for some but not all). The reason why type 1/2/3 hair grows faster is because the looser the curl pattern, the easier it is for sebum to travel down the hair shaft, making the hate retain more moisture; meaning, straight hair retains moisture the easiest, while coily retains the least amount of sebum, making it harder to retain moisture, and making it more prone to breakage. That's the only difference. It's not that afro-textured hair doesn't grow as much, it's that it breaks a lot more (as she states in the video). This is why finding a way to properly hydrate and moisturize is so important.

@@Dimitri1237 I agree with your outlook. As I said in my reply, sebum doesn't travel down the hair shaft as easily with type 4 hair because of its shrunken state; it will travel down the hair shaft more efficiently on stretched hair, making it retain moisture and break off less. I'm adopting blowouts/silk presses, because I'm tired of protective styles but I want to keep my hair stretched. My hair handles heat well, as long as I use a quality heat protectant and I don't do it too often. I'm not saying that hair can't grow if it's not stretched, but if your main objective is growing and not just retaining, stretched hair is one way to help your hair better retain moisture.

A science book will tell you that hair grows a quarter to half an inch a month. Each follicle sheds are different intervals. Genetics will play in shape of follicle and time of shedding. But using the incorrect tools is the main reason for breakage and chemicals are to blame for balding.

Growing up I believed that black women’s hair grew much faster than any other race. I was always amazed and envious of how they could have short curly hair one day, then a few months later have braided hair down to their bum. I never heard about wigs or extensions until I was in my 20s, and then I still thought it was the exception, not the norm. Yes I was ignorant, but in my defense my professor told us white students we were NEVER to talk about, compliment, or ask about “Black hair”.

She’s right! After years of perms and dyes I went to the barber and shaved my head bald. 7 years of simply using products that work for me and taking care of my hair it’s mid back length when stretched
