Building a Dream

This week I'm starting the process of putting a roof over my head, I make a much-needed sign for my front gate and make varnish out of Xanthorrhoea resin which is waterproof and could save me thousands of dollars on my home build by not having to purchase store bought varnish!
I have started my solo off-grid shipping container home build, and I could not be more excited!
In the last month, I finished building my own house foundations for under $6k when I was quoted $60k for contractors to do it, I installed a concrete shed slab myself for under $4k, I got the SHIPPING CONTAINERS delivered and placed on the footings I built, I got the jetty posts in my dam and felled some dead tree's all before winter hit!
I have recently moved across the country due to the housing crisis and bought an off-grid property with the dream to build my own container house.
I became an owner builder and after 8 months of design and planning I was approved to build my own home in Western Australia.
Subscribe to my channel to watch me build my shipping container home and off grid dream homestead!

I’ll be using the Creality Falcon2 Pro for a lot more projects around the homestead including making signs for my secret garden and roads around the property, but I would also love to think of other ways to make use of the laser cutting feature!
My favourite features include the fully enclosed lid so there is no laser leakage, and I really loved the built in camera for alignment and also so you can watch your designs being created!
There are many other great features of the Creality Falcon2 Pro including:
-Safe and Visible FDA Class 1 Safety Certification

-Visual Assistance for Precise Positioning Full-field Protection
- Unleash Unlimited Creative Space. Drawer Design

Hey Jas, if the jetty build turns to shit, you could make it out of barrels with a frame over top of them, so it rises and sinks with the water level. Bonus, you build it on dry land! Loads of good build videos on YT! Love your work!

I concur, by using the wider flat side up, you'll have flex in the wood which will wear and break much faster.

Also if you screw a piece of scrap wood to the post at the correct height you can sit the plank on it while you screw the other end in, then remove the scape wood.

A little suggestion for the resin varnish - put your jar in a bowl of hot water so that it gets nice and hot when mixing the resin powder with the ethanol. That way, you can get way more powder to dissolve and create a thicker varnish which will allow you to get a waterproof coating in just a couple of coats. It’s very similar to something called Shellac which has been used to preserve and beautify wood for a very long time. Love the colour!

To help keep the jetty stable you should use some bracing (timber or galvanised strapping) diagonally between the posts going front to back and left to right. By doing this it will make the jetty much stronger and less prone to moving if the footings are unstable too.

Thank you for a great video! We had some trespasser problems and we now have trail/game cameras set up with signs telling people they are on video, much fewer problems now. Plus if you get one that is really high res it can capture license plates. If you can spend more you can get ones with a cell signal so that they will upload immediately. But even the normal ones with an SD card are a great deterrent and can be hung up above 8' or so, that way they cant easily be stolen.

You must be thrilled. Vid has been up an hour and you’ve had over 5k views already. You have quite an army of supporters. So awesome. Loving watching the jetty build. Eager to see what solution you decide to go with to bury the posts so they can support people moving on jetty. Those 44 gallon drums you used for the footings may work if you can bury them deep enough and fill with concrete. Hope weather and unwelcome visitors stay away this week.

Thank you so much I’m honestly so grateful for the growing community here, everyone is so helpful 🙏 unfortunately the problem with the last two posts is the ground is rock where they need to go, like actual rock so you can’t dig it so I wonder if it would work with just concrete but I’m also think just cantilever the last section so the last posts are purely decoration and the structural integrity is all in the first sets of posts 🙌
@nicd868
@nicd868 2 месяца назад
@@Building.a.Dream-Barefoot_Jas concrete is a good solution and no doubt there are some civil engineers following who will offer guidance. If you’re thinking cantilever remember the fat did on the seesaw. The weight needs to be a whole lot greater than what will ever be on the other end or seesaw will fall. You’ll also need really strong hardware at fulcrum and for length of jetty. Timber is rated for different purposes. I think you used boxing timber for the long bits. It’s unlikely that timber will handle the jandal. Guessing would need to be 6”x2” at least and probably bigger. Wishing you every success.

Hi Jas, Here is an idea with your engraver that i use often on my CNC projects that may apply for you also. Engrave the sign 2-3 mm deep, then when its done apply some paint over the engraved aera then you sand off the paint. Only the engraved parts should remain painted. Then you got a lot more contrasts ! Another idea is to do the reverse. You paint your sign before engraving, no after sanding required.

G’day Jasmin, Thanks for an extra bonus video, I have to admit, I had a little giggle along with the kookaburras, while you were juggling with your posts. As you know, I’m a bit of a thinker and I have an idea on how you could secure the last two posts for your jetty… Get two large buckets/ old planters tubs and fill them with concrete, which you could mix in the buckets themselves then put your posts in. Once hardened, dig a hole in the dam floor, drop the bucket/post into it and then use two star-pickets on each side of each post ( hammer those in) and then use wire to tie them to the posts. This should hopefully make them secure and stay standing upright. Warning … you will get cold and wet doing this haha!! You could make a large sign in which you could put near the jetty with a cool name such as - serenity bay. With the wood for the top of your kayak, use small star-pickets or reo-bar and hammer them into the ground and whilst wetting the wood you could slowly bend them into the right shape, moving the bars a couple of inches at a time. pine wood is pretty flexible, but marine varnish / paint the hell out of it, once the wood has your desired shape. I hope you understand what I’ve tried to say here. I’d purchase a key ring with the bush tree design, hint hint . This could help show support and also help with a little extra money for future projects. Cheers mouse

I love the concrete idea but I wonder if it would work without digging into the ground, I don’t know if you remember from my other video but that was the problem with the last two posts the ground is actual rock so you can’t dig unfortunately but that sounds pretty strong even without putting them into the ground! Thank you so much for the boat recommendations that’s making me very excited! And yep I recon my Xanthorrhoea resin would do the trick for a great varnish there ! And ohh I love that you would be interested I’m actually looking into getting a license to do it, because you actually need a license to sell any form of Xanthorrhoea product but I think it should be easy enough to get and then I would love to make little bush crafts and sell the powder for people to make their own varnish too 😍🙏

Hey Jasmin, Always happy to help, I forgot about the rocky surface, maybe you could use old 20lt drums for the bottom of your posts, in similar fashion to the way you did your container footings. That would be strong, stable and heavy enough to hold the posts down. I’m sure you have the business smarts to be able to get all the right approvals and set up a nice little business. With the beautiful colours that the resin displays and being a unique Australian product, you are on a sure winner Mouse

In the past I have stood on scaffolding quite a bit. When you have a big job it is sometimes wiser to buy a second hand scaffolding (if you can) and when you have finished the job you sell it again. That way you do not lose money because the scaffolding keeps its value. Sometimes you even get more in return.

Yes you can paint your Canoe is it fibreglass? Also google Steam bending for what you want to do with timber. Basically you use a Steam wall paper remover, or two, build a timber cabinet to hook them up to, place wood into and you can then bend to shape and when it dries it retains that shape. Crealiity rocks for sponsoring your laser thingo. Make your own light shades / boxes with funky shapes cut out and then marvel and enjoy the wonderful effects you create (resin can also kinda be used as a colour filter) Also absolutely unfair you are forced to deal with the unwanted visitor problem still. Remote cameras can happily run on individual solar but need wifi signal so you can monitor and get alerts on your phone Sooo Happy Good Grrl Jango is ok give her a Boop and hug from Benny and me 😊

Hey Jaz, I had a solution that I came up with when doing the top level of my container design in Sketchup. I used the corner blocks and put small ibeams stretching from one to another and then support beams in between, so it is all weighed on the corner posts, which these containers are designed for. You then can just put OSB boards or whatever flooring on top.

If you're holding out on a camera system, you could "fake it til you make it!". Buy any cheap, broken or secondhand webcam, the bigger the better. Cover the black lens bits with painters tape and paint the rest a high-vis yellow. Now get your big ladder and screw the camera as high up a tree as you can safely get next to the gate. This isn't a recording system, but a deterence. Add a tiny electrical box with some solar panels from cheap garden light to add to the believability 👍

You can put the wood strips in a pvc pipe that has a hose at one end going to the lid of a pot of boiling water. It would get bendable after 15-30 minutes or so. And will stay at the new shape if you keep it clamped for several hours while it cools down. It will spring back a little bit though, so overcompensating a bit might be good. I think the heat is what makes it bendy, not the water in the steam. When they make bows (as in bow and arrows) they make a long thin fire and suspend the stick over the fire (like a spit roast) and this makes the wood bend also.
