Another big difference between the Portola and many other e-bikes (not just folding ones) is you can adjust the power for each PAS level if you don’t like the factory defaults. It’s a feature I think Ride1Up enables on most, if not all, of their e-bikes.

I've been evaluating step thru folding ebikes for over a month now in trying to decide what will be my first ebike. I've been particularly looking at Lectric 3.0, Hovbeta, Aventon Sinch, Vtuvia SX20 Antelope, and Espin Nesta. So now this Portola from Ride1Up just dropped. Wow.... It looks like a game changer for real. Lighter weight, shorter, hydraulic disc brakes, a strap to hold it together, welded frame, nice color choices. The only slight drawback I can see is the battery range. Glad to see a major player like Ride1Up finally get a folder. Nice review guys.

The Espin Nesta’s power delivery is a handful. I got thrown off a couple times due to it sending over 900W of power from a stop before I set the first PAS to a very low speed (between 3-5mph) so it only has a chance to send between 300-500W to its very torquey (85Nm) hub motor. Even then, it makes me go wide on turns after a stop sign. That’s the main disadvantage of a speed-targeting cadence-sensor driven ebike - arbitrary power delivery curves. I got a Lectric XPedition after the Nesta because of its cargo hauling capability and also its P.W.R. power management style, which is what they call a power-setting cadence sensor system, which is what Ride1Up uses for all their cadence sensor e-bikes, including the Portola. An ebike driven by a torque sensor or a power-setting cadence sensor driven ebike is much easier to ride safely. I’ve never been tossed off by the XPedition, and only once off my Ride1Up LMT’d (torque sensor) because I had the PAS set to maximum assist while trying to navigate very lumpy and slippery terrain at low speed. Whoops. 😅 The HovBeta and Sinch 2 each use a torque sensor. FWIW, folding e-bikes with 20x4 tires are heavy and bulky, making them more difficult to wrangle into and out of cars. 20x3 tires are easier to wrangle and feel more nimble while providing some cushion.

Great review, I’ve been looking at the Portola for my wife, and your feedback confirms the excellent value I thought it to be. I just bought a Hanevear H100, with dual 750W motors and a 16 ah battery for $1199 delivered. It’s a pretty good value (hydraulic disc brakes, color display, folding, 20x4 tires, rack, head and tail light), and I’m super pleased with the performance, build quality and overall ride. I think it would be a terrific one for you to review.

Thumbs up for the bike and this comprehensive review. I know two current Lectric owners quite well, and the thing that would drive me nuts is the key placement and awkward battery removal. The integrated battery on this machine is a major plus. Furthermore, I'm impressed by the class (1,2, or 3) versatility. Also, while I rarely if ever use a throttle, I prefer the thumb throttle. It's much tougher to engage accidentally. The strap is a nice touch too.
@dennisluz6453
@dennisluz6453 8 месяцев назад
Agree with above features. One mfr uses magnets to keep folded wheels together but I believe straps are more foolproof. Battery location better too and my preference would also be for thumb throttle instead of twist throttle. Will there be room for a rear mirror attachment on left side?

I would have to say that one of the other things NOT to like about this particular eBike is the cheap plastic pedals. I think Ride 1Up could have improved on them a bit more with a larger foot surface area also. Other than that, it is a Fantastic bike by Ride 1Up (which I currently own the Core 5 bike)

Only thing i would add is a minimum 52 tooth chainring. 48 is too small for proper pedal assist. For 750watts need a 15ah option. Really like how you take out the battery. And the key on the side is much better then a key under the bike ,um(lectric) i like my lectric 3.0 but its annoying how the battery is taken out. And to me there placement of the key under the ebike is very annoying. Good value for the money. This ride1up Portola . Only needs larger chainring. How is customer service with this company? That makes or breaks the value of any e-bike.

I find the magnetic coupling used on my Tern releases too easily, so I’ve used a Velcro strap to secure it when folded. About time someone equipped a folding bike with a stock strap! FYI, Aventon updated the Sinch 2’s firmware to increase its top speed, though only to 25mph. This is a great first effort by Ride1Up on a folding ebike. Nice components, great price point. Waiting for UL certification though, as I’d like to be able to take it to NYC when I visit.

i hate quick release, just means you need to lock your front wheel too whenever you lock your bike up somewhere. also hate quick release seats since you have to lock that as well. derailleur guards just end up bending your frame if you hit it hard enough as opposed to breaking your derailleur hanger which can be replaced for under $10. derailleur guards are only good on cheap bikes that dont have seperate derailleur hangers (most cheap bikes use the bike frame itself as a derailleur hanger instead of a metal piece thats screwed onto the frame)

Something not in the review: do the pedals have a cadence sensor or a torque sensor? I tried a cadence sensor bike (RadPower), and I was surprised: it was basically like the motor and my leg power didn’t blend at all. The motor basically did all the work until it reached the speed set by the assist level, and then it was all leg power to go any faster. So, if I wanted to cruise at 15mph, it didn’t feel like I was doing half the work, but if the assist was low and maxed out at 10mph, those final 5mph felt way harder than bringing my traditional mechanical bike up to 15 mph just under the power of my own legs.
@chow-chihuang4903
@chow-chihuang4903 8 месяцев назад
Ride1Up cadence sensor e-bikes use a power-setting PAS style instead of the more common speed-setting style. I think Lectric recently adopted it and calls it PWR. For cadence sensor bikes, it’s what I prefer. It’s easier to control my speed and much less likely to make me lose control the bike in slow tight maneuvers. Anyway, each PAS level corresponds to an amount of power sent to the motor, and doesn’t drop as it approaches a speed or cuts out entirely if you exceed a speed (except for the class limits). A key difference between the Ride1Up and Lectric systems is you can adjust the power output of each level with Ride1Up’s. So you can tailor them to suit your preferences.

Wow, just wow. I’ve been researching e-bikes for the last week and the sinch was well in the lead until finding out about the Portola. The only thing is that on the website the total battery mileage is listed at 20 miles, which I assume is for the smaller batter. Would the larger one be more likely to stand up to the quoted 50 miles of the Sinch?
@chow-chihuang4903
@chow-chihuang4903 5 месяцев назад
Electric Bike Report achieved 24.67 to 49.56mi with the spare 14Ah battery on their test loop. The 13.4Ah pack should get close to those results, and of course, YMMV depending on total weight, terrain, winds, riding style, tire pressure etc. The Sinch 2 got 36.4-58.8mi on the same loop. This is probably thanks to its torque sensor system, which modulates motor assist according to how much force you exert on the pedals, up to the max for each PAS level. It also did slightly better on their hill climb test. However, it’s heavier, class 3 is capped at 25mph, uses cable-pulled brakes and its gearing will require a faster cadence at higher speeds (ghost-pedaling sensation). If they solved those issues, plus equipped 20x3 tires, I’d have gotten the Sinch 2.

For cadence-driven ebikes, PAS levels that set power output to the motor like Ride1Up’s e-bikes and what Lectric calls P.W.R. simply let you decide how much assistance you want the motor to give you and you supply the rest. Ones that target speeds provide assistance according to an arbitrary curve and tapers off rapidly as you approach the target speed. Between the two, the first is the easiest to manage (i.e., doesn’t make the bike difficult to control at low speeds or tight maneuvers) and lets you control the amount of exercise you want. Not as easily as an ebike with a torque sensor, but it also lets you set the bike to do most or all the work when you need to. Torque sensor and power-setting cadence sensor e-bikes also let you match speeds with other riders more easily. It can be very difficult to match speeds with other riders with speed-setting cadence sensor systems, even ones of the same make and model as every rider is different and they don’t tightly calibrate each unit. For instance, I’ve friends with three Lectric XP 2.0 e-bikes and they each go at different speeds when set to the same PAS level. They end up switching PAS levels frequently to try to stay together, but they still enjoy them. One ended up upgrading to an XPedition and another to an XP 3.0 and they much prefer the power-setting method.

Dave will definitely get a chance to win it. We would love for him to win a more expensive product since he is always brightening our day when he comes to visit.

Excellent offering from Ride1up. Completely blows away Lectric in the entry level foldable market for less $$$. Much prefer the step thru to the step over. At $1000 with the bigger battery, Ride1up has a big seller. Didn’t hear if it’s UL listed but that is a must for 2024. Wonder how that We Works guy at Lectric will respond? Maybe by cutting his hair and getting off acid? Edit: by introducing a pathetic 26x4 hard tail with a tiny weak 48v 14 AH battery in a completely saturated segment of the market🥱😂🤣. Clearly they are tripping if they think this will sell in 2024. Going to find out real quick that they have no real brand equity in a commodity market driven by price.

For just 400.00 more I know a bike that gets you 3X more battery range and almost 3X more motor power, ie (1400.00 USD you get a 35 Amp single battery and 2000 Watt single rear motor) from a USA based shipper coming from a name brand website in business over 20 years. Maybe you should reach out to the distributor and ask for a ''review model'' for your channel,

Or you could just mention what it is and not be so passive…..

And maybe weigh a ton more. Remember, weight is a critical feature for many older riders and even women.

Really ride1up. Nobody likes that black gloss color and other makers offer accident protection plans for their bikes.

Yeah, let's have better color choices. Black/gray so dull.

I’d like to see glossy white, red and metallic cobalt options!
