You are such an honest photographer, I’m deeply grateful to have come across your channel. I was mortified this week because I got the chance to photograph with models and I had NO STUDIO! That thought started flowing into “what if my camera isn’t good enough”or “how am I gonna make these look cool and different” blah blah blah. Unproductive thoughts! I’m gonna figure this shoot out like I always do, make the pictures beautiful, and you’ve given me much needed reassurance. W videos and channel. Eres genial🙏

Thank you so much! So nice to know that this video made you feel better. Our thoughts and self-doubts are our worst enemies! 🤦🏻‍♀️ You’ll do a great job. Once you start shooting, you’ll feel way better. Every new photoshoot is a new challenge so we get nervous. It still happens to me with big projects. 😅 Go for it! And best of luck! ❤️💪🏼📸

I also really like the advice to find clients that are at the same “level” and realising that just because you can’t charge the same as a full professional doesn’t mean you can’t make some money. And this is also a spiral - once you start having an income with photography gear will (literally) pay for itself
@SmallTimeCaptures

I will be the first to admit that even this early on, I was starting to fall into the Gear Acquisition Syndrom for sure, but the only thing I ended up doing was swapping my APS-C body for a full frame (because my hobby aspect is night street photography, and my camera really wasn't holding up for the shots I was trying to take) But I fully understand that was a want more than a need! Now I run my 35mm + 85mm primes and all in the pursuit of starting a portrait/lifestyle photography business, I finished my second shoot with another model last week and I have another lined up for next week to get my portfolio underway! You have also inspired me to try more self portraiture to experiment with my style, my first studio flash arrived today so that will be an on going theme for the next few months! Thank you, thank you, thank you for the REAL + Raw rational you bring to your videos, you have pushed me forward so much since I found your channel a few months ago and I have gotten very comfortable and super happy with MY work! Big Love from Scotland, enjoy your travels!!
@LauraBC
@LauraBC Год назад
Hi Scot! What a joy to read this message! It makes me super happy to know that my channel is been helping you! ❤️ And everything I read makes me so proud of your choices. I think a full-frame is a must! And more with the night street photography requirements. It's super easy to fall into the Gear Acquisition Syndrome... We all become a bit "geeky" about gear and we always want more and more... 😅 Good choices with the lenses for lifestyle and portrait! the 35mm is sooooo versatile on a full-frame and the 85mm is spot on for portrait photography! 👌🏼 Also, well done with your photoshoots. Building a portfolio is the most important step before start approaching potential clients. A portfolio is our best introduction as a photographer. Again, THANK YOU for your comments because knowing that you feel that way, really really motivates me to keep creating. 🙏🏼 Sending you a big hug all the way from London to Scotland! Looking forward to knowing more about your next steps in your new business! ❤️

I thought that I could learn everything on RU-vid. RU-vid does help a bit after the person in front of the camera talks and rambles on for 8 minutes and then gets to the point. I started listening to a photography podcast because I thought it would be like lessons but in a way it wasn’t. The person on the podcast did have courses online and I decided to give it a try and the difference was night and day compared to learning on RU-vid. What makes it the best experience, in my opinion, is that there is no ads, there are no sponsors taking video time, it just goes straight to the point. I would highly recommend that if you resonate with a photographer/videographer and they offer courses; take them. It will literally be life changing. Wish you all the best, I know we’re all trying to learn. You guys stay safe and keep on learning.
@LauraBC
@LauraBC Год назад
I TOTALLY agree with this. On RU-vid you have to do a lot of research to find the right videos. You learn a lot but through a lot of research. Thanks so much for this video. Negativity is the enemy that slows us down! You do a great job showing that all the limitations are put in our heads and that we must be positive with the opportunities we have now. Positivity is key and we tend to forget this! Great video!

Great advice, as usual. I hope it reaches someone who wants to begin a career. Have always admired your drive and determination. Good advice on a few pieces of quality gear. I have recently been developing my editing skill, and it really is exciting and rewarding. Never ending, of course, but the editors have really improved in the last decade, especially noise reduction in some of them. High ISO is no longer to be feared, even when cropping is required.

Thank you so much Edward! I’m glad you liked the video and I’m very happy to have you around here knowing you share the same thoughts. ❤️ Totally agree about the editing part. It’s a never ending learning process but when getting better, it makes all the difference! 😍

I loved everything you said here and nearly cried because I’m stuck for the opposite reason. Not bragging; but having too much gear and not knowing where to start… the answer is to just start! I really have no excuse now (especially since you mentioned all the “ways to pivot for beginners”),other than I will improve the more photos I take :-)

I honeymooned in Thailand In about 1995 and purchased an SLR duty free, which was the midrange Minolta Alpha/Dynax/Maxxum 700si, the camera of the year, when walking around one of the Temples, I was laying on my back and doing all sorts of things to get interesting angles and a Japanese tourist had a Nikon F4 around his neck and was using it like a point and shoot, and the photos turned out as I anticipated rich colours because I was metering more of the sky with a polarising filter, light reflecting of the gold on the Temples and Palaces and no people in the frames, and now in 2024 I have gone back to film getting a Minolta Alpha 7 SLR because one piece of gear that does matter more than average is the glass and now I can buy the F/2.8 fast APO Minolta lenses that were just a dream back in the 2000’s at a fraction of their original price and later I can add a Sony Alpha 7 DSLR which has the Minolta lens Mount, just couldn’t justify the cost of getting the good glass for digital cameras but I bought what was essentially 3000 Australian dollars worth of camera and flash and vertical grip for 540 Australian dollars and all though I have this nagging, “wish I could see how that shot turned out” I will still get the excitement of waiting for the prints and the processing place I will use do professional scans of the negatives.
