The only third party ones worth buying are the 8BitDo Ultimate and GuliKit KingKong Pro. Get one of those or the official one. Big RU-vidrs keep pushing this unreliable and cheap-feeling bullshit for no reason
I always figured that the reason why third party companies don't use HD rumble motors is because of licensing fees. I'm pretty sure that I heard that PlayStation is using the same company as Nintendo for their rumble motors so I assume it's that company's proprietary technology that they're licensing out to these companies. Given the massive scale that both Nintendo and Sony are implementing this technology, I'm sure the overall licensing fees are fairly low for them as it's just good business to offer a better deal for someone selling millions upon millions of devices but in the case of third party controllers that will likely not even hit a million units sold on their lifetime I'll bet the licensing fees are quite a bit more expensive...or at least maybe they WERE years and years ago but now as tech has advanced maybe it's starting to come down a bit.
It's honestly hard to say if the licensing thing has changed. For sure that was part of it. It's similar to why a lot of third party controllers don't include a NFC reader.
The one thing I like with old rumble motors is that they give a stronger feedback compared to HD Rumbles. Things like Psycho Mantis moving your controller in MGS1 wouldn’t work with HD rumble. But I agree that most people would just end up using the HD Rumble for more detailed feedback.
If we talk about HD rumble (or something very close to it) there are few gamepads with it and many more great features like Hall effect sticks + NFC reader + mechanical face buttons and dpad + back buttons all in one device existing for some time. And I am glad that at least controllers for Switch are moving fast in this direction.
I have a non Nintendo branded "pro controller " that I bought at big lots for 20 dollars that works amazingly well solid, batteries last as long as the branded one. I know it's rare but this one works too. I will reply when I get home with the model number later. I also have a pro controller
The only non Nintendo pro controller I’ll ever recommend is the 8bitDO Ultimate one. Binbok makes decent stuff but their joycons have connection issues and always unpair for me.
@@ArtisChroniclesJoycons are junk and they lose connection so much, especially if there's lots of them. As soon as I got a couple pro controllers, I avoided joycons unless I had to lol.
I just use the NYXI Wizard. I mostly play on handheld and it works great! No drifting. And when I do play on the tv I use PowerA wireless controller. Again works great with no drift. Got it on sale for $35.
The og rumble motors are really only good for the games that were designed around them, which is why Nintendo still uses them in their N64 controllers. That said, I wonder how those og rumble motors would react to hd rumble events like the rainbow blocks in Mario. it'd be interesting seeing the eccentric motors trying to play music lol
Honestly you could probably just test any cheap third party joycon with generic rumble to see. I can tell you that when playing many switch games with third party controllers that the generic rumble motors just don’t interact well with these titles that use subtle bits of rumble frequently, like Mario Wonder or even Mario Kart. It just feels very buzzy, I guess. Wouldn’t recommend it. I switched back to the joycons, bought a skull and co grip (which comes with a Dpad attachment) and did the Gulikit hall sensor mod. All the regular joycon features, including HD Rumble, with better ergonomics, serviceable Dpad, and non-drifting sticks. You’re still stuck with the PS Vita-esque stick range but I never had a problem with that tbh
I wonder if the pitch from the HD Rumble generated music would be more accurate if the old-style rumble motors were removed completely. Assuming the controller would still function that way.
It's funny that the first and main thing you mention is HD rumble...rumble is the first thing I always turn off. Bad d-pad -ugh I'm out. I will stick with my Nyxi Hyperion - it does what I need and can use sides independently separated. I used to use the Nintendo Pro controller but it got drift almost immediately and with my shoulder issues I need to hold my hands apart so the regular joy cons and the Nyxi really work well for me.
Great review, I looked up this controller and decided to give it a shot myself (it also uses "driftless" Hall Effect sticks, although drift has not been an issue on my Pro controller). So, the DPad is clicky? Big whoop, so was the DS's, and I played the heck out of that. Probably would bother me more if I was a fighting game fan.
Every conroller with a D-pa that performs worst than the Super Nintendo controller, is a bad Conroller. D-pads should perform at least as good as either as good as the GB/GB color or the pS3/PS4 conroller to be decent, but the best will always be the snes D-pad; if it isn't broke, then don't fix it. I do like the astedics of this controller, especially that the buttons aren't positioned in the way of others or where I hold the controller. Also, I still hate that Nintendo has yet to update thier system to make use of anolog triggers. No it doesn't need to be utilized in every game, but the ones that previously made use of it in earlier Generation had a more immersive experiance. Hd rumble for a more immersive expeirance, but no anolgg triggers for more immersive controls.
8bitdo doens't have HD rumble but is my go-to. i have 2 official pro controllers and neither drift yet, but i still prefer the 8bitdo. official pro has horrible dpad
I just want a high quality gamecube style wireless controller for the switch. Not sure why that's not already a thing. Looking for the extra buttons too like the home button and the l2/l1 button. PowerA is okay, its just so cheaply made.
Took someone long enough. Related, Power A controllers are sad, whoever buys them should feel bad, and the company that makes them should feel sorry and awful.
Might be unpopular, I don't know. I just don't like the "rumble" feature. I never have. Back when I first got the "Rumble Pack" for my Star Fox 64, I just wasn't a fan of it. Between motion blur, and rumble, those are the first things I turn off when starting a game, or getting a new system. Sorry but not..it's not a clip. It's a magazine, or mag for short.
I really like the Xboxs rumbling as well. They have motors in the triggers which feels really nice and is almost like force feedback. Of course switch controllers have digital triggers but even if they didn't I would prefer the Xbox controller for games like Forza where you can feel the ground underneath you.
Same. I bought two Xbox Series controllers for my PC. It's my favorite controller, especially when playing Forza. One thing Microsoft does well is make controllers.
I got the binbok joycons before TOTK and they are absolutely fantastic. They’re the main reason I’m using my switch again (besides all the amazing games that came out last year now) and there’s absolutely no turning back to the tiny, uncomfortable regular joycons😊
the problem is always the same, a controller thats not official product usually won't last more than 2-3months at best in a hard core gamers hands. ProController are very sturdy, but even those only last up to 3-4years at best in the hands of someone who plays stuff like SuperSmashBorthersUltimate for 900hours. Until it starts getting drift cause they decided to make analagos with plastic connectors that wear down overtime instead of metal ones like in the past.
I have a third party controller I found on another RU-vidr's channel and I've had it for about 3 years now. (Not to knock spawnwave i just dont think he did a vid on it) Works with bluetooth on PC with retroarch (with some setup) and switch. Its the Surge Switchpad Pro Wireless controller. It's worked flawlessly in my only drive about it is the shoulder buttons and the dpad. The Dpad is a tad bit stiff and the shoulders, specifically L2 and R2, are shaped a bit awkward. I can't bring myself to buy another third party controller but there are a few that have come close.
Being that the main components plug in, it seems like it's serviceable. If the battery or one of the motors quits, it looks pretty straight-forward to go about replacing them. Which is a nice touch given how most modern electronics like that seem to be made to be disposable instead.
Dude, I love how you don't just take the controller apart to show us the HD rumble motor but also how you take apart the HD rumble motor itself. I'm always interested in finding out how things work and I think that's the niche and type of content which sets your interests and knowledge apart from similar creators, and that's the good stuff I'm coming back for.
Definitely a matter of what u use most, during ps4 cod i went thru legitimately 20+ controllers in 3 years Xbox so far nothing since launch of series x
@@nouns7504 I think Xbox makes a great controller. I use them a lot as well. Only time I’ve replaced their thumb sticks is if they were a light color and got dirty so I put black ones on.
HD Rumble is precisely why I won't use a 3rd party controller for specific games that benefit from precise nuanced vibrations, like Splatoon 3, MK8, or SSBU.
The MOBAPAD M9 PRO SWITCH CONTROLLER does the regular and hd rumble as well. Its more of xbox style grip, but its a very good controller that does both BT and 2.4 with a dongle. Light rgb colors, very responsive buttons with a good d-pad and turbo function.
Looks nice but that D-pad is a deal breaker. If you play fighting games and use D-pad. It won't be long before you throw the controller out the window in a rage.
I don't know why people are this impressed by the HD Rumble sounds in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Nintendo has been using this feature ever since Mario Kart 8 DX came out lol The HD Rumble makes the famous Mario coin sound every time you pick up a coin during a race. The real novelty in SMB Wonder is Nintendo giving us settings to adjust the HD Rumble's level.
Nice TechWave Vid Jon(SW). I am a Gemini, so I should Pick this Up lol. As a Second Controller or a Backup too the Switch Pro Controller, this could be a really good Pickup but with the D-Pad being Pants, it'll be a Pass for me.
2 things: 1) rumble in any form is crazy overrated. 2) offsetting carbon is crap strategy to make people feel good who don’t take the environment seriously. Never use a company who makes these bull claims.
I have this brand's wireless joy con replacement. The stock Switch controllers are just way too small and uncomfortable. These are bulbous and large and allow pain-free playing. They work well.
It's always been so bizarre to me how so many controller designs struggle with a good d-pad. Nintendo nailed it 40 years ago. The patent is long-dead. How hard is it to just make them like that again?
I love the aphstetic of the white version of this controller but I cant justify getting a new controller since I already have what I consider to be the best Switch Pro controller the Mobapad Chitu, Mechanical buttons, great D-pad, hall effect sticks, HD rumble, back buttons, switch wakeup and even Amiibo support
My third party (a Mytrix) only has turbo/Auto feature & a headphone jack. Don't care about rumble, infrared, amiibo sensor, etc. Just give me a cheap controller that does what I need. (I would link it, but the Amazon description for my order reflects a newer controller more advanced than what I ordered.)
Nice to see a third party controller using the HD feedback motors as I like to play a pinball game that takes advantage of it. The bad d-pad though thats a deal breaker. D-pads should be taken more seriously. Least it has a couple grip buttons though I'd prefer four instead of two but better something than nothing.
you didn't talk about the turbo -_- i want to use turbo on ZR but also have non Turbo ZR . can i set one of the macro buttons on the back to be Turbo ZR and the other to be down on the D pad ?
I’ve had some knockoff pro controllers for awhile. They play alright but the rumble is way off. Maybe when the switch 2 pro controller is released I’ll finally upgrade.
Good that 3rd party controller finally figured it out. Also, the KMD third party controller I bought & use already had it figured earlier.. Lastly, that Gemini pro controller definitely looks very nice, is very detailed, & perfoms good.
I like the new cheaper 8bitdo switch controllers. Only thing is it doesnt have HD rumble. The D pade is great but its the location of it that holds it back. Switch 2, 4k rumble.
This kinda reminds me of the classic controller pro on the Wii, it even has the terrible glossy plastic which is a fingerprint magnet, but if it works well then it's worth dealing with!
I really like this controller and haven't had much to complain about, even the d pad is fine for me. However, I had to open the controller and remove the entire turbo button (which I'll never use) because I would CONSTANTLY inadvertently hit it due to its placement.
Bro as soon as I heard you say that the D-Pad was “disgusting”, well that’s a make or break for me. It does look tacky although I did like the way they implemented the RGB lights. If it wasn’t for the D-Pad woulda been a cool third party controller to have to use or give to a friend or family member.
I have 5 Pro Controllers. They register the opposite direction on the stick if I release them too fast. All of them. It causes my character to pivot in Smash if I let up too quickly, which is absurd. This, and a few other issues, have me looking for an alternative that doesn't do this. It's unfortunate that I haven't found one.
I suspect Nintendo had an exclusivity deal with Immersion (the company that developed the technology for the Switch's HD Rumble and the PS5's haptics) for the required parts, hence why no third-party controllers had access to them, just like there is no PS5 third-party controllers with haptic feedback. Now since Nintendo is about to launch a new console that includes what we can only assume is an updated version of the tech, third-party manufacturers are probably just starting to have access to this "old" technology that Nintendo is about to replace. Heck Nintendo has been supporting NFC since the 3DS and we just started to see third-party controllers with amiibo support since last year.
If it's without hall sensing dual analog sticks even if it has HD rumble, with all the extra features and all the extra buttons at the back it isn't right. Joystick controller without hall sensing sticks should not be made anymore because the technology is there.
Of all the platforms out there, tge one that uses the dpad the most is switch due to the sheer amount of 2d games on the platform. Therefore, this dpad stops me purchasing it.
