Question for the comments section: with skellies or spear gobs, or something the miner can finish off - is it better to actually catch the miner from the beginning?.. or better to let miner lock on to tower, so the gobs or skellies can kill it quicker?

catching is better if your tower is not distracted, but if the miner is being tanked for then wait for it to lock on tower then kill it

Definitely letting miner lock. The miner gets like 1 hit less and if you are using x-bow, those skeletons will also help set up for an offensive x-bow. Not sure about goblins, non x-bow decks might have a different playstyle.
