I have come to the conclusion that I now use acrylic as my under painting and top off with oils. This technique makes the painting come to life. After I do my acrylic I varnish, then with the oils on top. The varnish brings the acrylics back to their "wet" look.

A few months ago, I was getting frustrated with the "block in all the big shapes and then do the details" approach because it just... doesn't work for me. Every other tutorial insisted that you MUST do it that way or your values will be all wrong and planes will fall out of the sky and whatever. But all it did was aggravate me. So I tried this approach with a busy farmer's market scene, and OMG... it really is a game changer. I'm so much happier working on small components, finishing them, then moving on to the next than I was with blocking in. I think for me, I just got really frustrated with the "ugly stage", especially on larger paintings. It was overwhelming. Working on smaller pieces just works so, so much better for me. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!

I've painted in oils for the UK's biggest art publisher for near 20 years and I routinely have my oils dry overnight without Liquin etc. Colour choice is key. I use Michael Harding fast dry titanium white, prussian blue, earth colours are mostly fast drying, Michael Harding cadmium yellows and reds (both very opaque), quinacridone rose, magenta, pthalo green. Mostly all Michael Harding, good quality gives best coverage (I paint in one layer always) plus drying speeds are written on the tubes. I paint 15 hours a day, 7 days a week and absolutely have to be able to carry on the next morning on a dried painting. Never understood why people avoid oils thinking that they take a long time to dry. 🙂

I paint oil, and I paint acrylic. I’ve watched others do it and thought “hmmm, I should try that”. Like you, I find the drying time of oils can be an issue sometimes. You’ve convinced me to give it a try 😊 Beautiful job!

Awesome, I'm an oil painter and this is similar to the method I use, acrylic undertone/underpainting then oil on the top. Lol it does take forever to paint in small sections vs one continual layer like acrylic, but the results are always wonderful! I've tried painting in layers with oil, it kind of works with fast drying colors. And here I was thinking my method needed to be changed; talk about a confidence boost😁💕!

I usually paint with oils by default but every so often ill do a few pieces in acrylics. although i use different techniques for both. funny enough this summer i fancied getting the acrylics out and within no time at all realised timed that thought wrong as per the overly fast drying due to the heat lol. For the most part I paint this exact same way in oils, there is something exciting about seeing it come together piece by piece. even more so when working on a white background at times

Awesome video ! Could you make some day a video about mixing colors and color matching? Most animals are in that brown to gray area and i find it hard to reach the brown I want and to adjust the value with acrylics. I never know what color to mix together!

I do this all the time. Get the underpainting blocked in and finish in oil You know there are alkyd paints as well. They are quite nice and dry very quickly. I don't paint thickly anyway, so this works very well. Also you can put in very unusual and bright underpainting colors you can't get in oil, then, get some interesting results in the end.

Fantastic painting and great video. While painting straight form oil tubes, did you ever use any solvents or add any extra linseed (or other oils)? And what you use to clean your oils brushes? Lastly, how would you "finish" your oils, with a specific oil painting varnish?
@PhantomFilmAustralia
@PhantomFilmAustralia Год назад
That's a beautiful piece. Would it be faster to include light and dark tones on your base layer of acrylic instead of a single base tone of colour?

Watercolor Acrylics Pastels Colored pencils/Watercolor pencils Markers/ water based markers Inks Can all go underneath a painting technically. Just never on top of oils Oils are the proud friend of the group who always feels the need to be on top. But with Acrylics or Watercolor you can place Mixed Media on top or underneath. Experiment with smaller paintings and have fun Guys. 😄

I was watching Bob Ross and he was mentioning why he didnt use acrylics under oils, and instead was using Gesso, and he said that it was because acrylics weren't permanent under acrylics? They may disappear? I'm not a big painter yet, and have never used oils, so I don't know for sure. But maybe you could look into that?

Cheaper oil paints are diluted with too much linseed oil. Try to squeeze out a glob onto corrugated cardboard first and let it absorb the excess oil for about 5-10 minutes before transferring it to your palette.

Oils “dry” through oxidization, not through evaporation. Application of heat will not dry them.
@dimitrioskalfakis

@@goilo888 exactly, that is why a constant supply of fresh forced air will speed up drying, just use a mild temperature and air flow setting.

Why wouldn't you just block the whole painting in (big shapes) and then add then detail in later. Seems like it would be way faster.
@billy.mandalay
@billy.mandalay Год назад
Yep Or premix large batches of acrylics for the background. Still alla prima. And there are acrylics that are more liquid in the market available as well.
@jeffallen559
@jeffallen559 Год назад
@@billy.mandalay yeah I don’t really paint with acrylics any more. For how thin the layers are with this painting the paint would be dry to the touch next day.

😂😂😂😂😂 si investigaras un poco sobre VERDADERA pintura sabrías que esa técnica se llama pintura por impasto 😑😑😑
@StudioWildlife
@StudioWildlife Год назад
So as not to confuse people, impasto is a technique where thick layers of paint are applied to a canvas so the brush marks or palette knife marks are visible. This is a slightly different technique known as Alla Prima which is a wet in wet technique where the painting is completed in 1 sitting 😁
