Watch this American Rifleman Television segment of "I Have This Old Gun" to learn more about the Colt Anaconda revolver chambered in .44 Mag.
Introduced in 1990, the Colt Anaconda is a large-frame, double-action revolver with a full-lugged barrel and six round cylinder. It marked Colt's first entry into the large-bore magnum handgun market. With its larger 'MM' frame, the Anaconda was meant to compete with other .44 Mag. revolvers on the market, like the Smith & Wesson Model 29 and Ruger Redhawk.
However, by the time the Anaconda was introduced to the market in 1990, its competitor handguns were well-established, with some having been available 30 years before the release of the Anaconda. Thus, the Anaconda was late for the .44 Mag. market and missed the craze that came with it. The Anaconda was one of the Colt "Snake Gun" series of double-action revolvers that have since exploded in the collector's market in recent years.
The design layout of the Anaconda and other "Snake Guns" were largely the work of a Colt engineer by the name of Paul LaViolette. The new style of double-action Colt revolver included the use of a transfer bar and incorporated parts that were either cast or easily machined. Unfortunately, the Anaconda would not enjoy the popularity or praise that its other "Snake Gun" counterparts did. When the Anaconda was released and tested, it was found to be less than satisfactory.
As already mentioned, the Anaconda arrived very late to the market to compete with other well established .44 Mag. revolvers, not to mention that the market trend had moved on to double-action, semi-automatic handguns by that point. That was not the only problem, as the Anaconda was not only late but less than satisfactory with build quality. The return spring had flaws that resulted in a gritty trigger pull. Accuracy was also less than satisfactory initially until Colt changed the barrels. This made the Anaconda less than desirable for a $540 revolver at the time.
While the Anaconda was not ground-breaking for the market at the time, it was for Colt in that it was largely constructed of stainless steel. It was never offered in carbon steel like the original Ruger Redhawk. The Anaconda also had the appearance of an upsized King Cobra with the ventilated-rib barrel of the Python, being a culmination of all the classic Colt revolver features into one gun.
Inside the frame, the Anaconda is not like the popular Python. It uses a coil main spring and a transfer-bar safety. The Anaconda was basically and upscaled Colt Trooper Mark III. Barrel lengths available included 8", 6" or 4" standard with a limited-edition version with a 5" barrel. The Anaconda was chambered for .44 Mag., .44 Spl. and .45 Colt. The 53 oz. weight of the standard 6" barrels version was fine, but the design was not as balanced as contemporaries in the same category.
The Anaconda also featured adjustable sights like the Python and was marketed towards target shooters and hunters. Production of all Anaconda revolvers including special order models ceased by 2003. Despite its shortcomings and lack-luster, the Anaconda has increased in collectability over the years like the rest of the Colt "Snake Guns" and continues to do so, as there were not many made overall compared to other Colt revolver models.

God I miss mine. I had the 44mag. Unfortunately I also had a wife that was scared of guns. Funny how soon as I sold my Colt Anaconda she walked out the door. Lord I miss that revolver!

Maybe you'll get another Anaconda some day. i'm wondering if they will make another soon , Colt Detective too. Handled a Smith 629 44 mag 6 inch barrel yesterday ,pro Series ...wood handle .i think I would prefer a rubber grip. What a single action pull. it didn't have the new ball detent lock up or the barrel insert (non one piece barrel).

Just picked up a 1992 anaconda for $1500 this weekend. Luckily, my girlfriend loves guns and believes I should start collecting the Colt snakes. Haven’t shot it yet but looking forward to it.

I have Colt Ananconda and i use it. Nothing bad to say about it. Changed the grips last year to Hogue something. It is accurate and really fun to shoot. Double action is not gritty or anything. This gun has been shot something like under 1000 rounds.

I purchased a 44 mag 8" Anaconda in 1991 primarily as a hunting revolver. I used it for a while and it shot reasonably well. I just sort of drifted away from using it and settled mostly on using a scoped Redhawk instead. The Anaconda has mostly just sat in my safe all of these years. The Anaconda just felt sort of crudely done both in finish and smoothness of action, though I can't say it was bad. I have several old Pythons and I guess I always subconsciously compared it to the Pythons.

Had a new one back in the day, impressive looking 8" barrel but what they said about the trigger and balance is true. Maybe CZ can make a better version, now that they own Colt.

From what I have read, Colt was trying to bring back the Python however it did not go well. Colt was also talking about bringing the Anaconda back. From what I read, all the skilled labor who previously built these guns are gone or died.

I had always thought that was Karl Lewis who desingned the Mark III series revolver for Colt. This is the first time I heard about Paul Leviolet.

Nobody has a commentary or opinion about this????

Sure, Karl Lewis patented the transfer bar that is used on the Mk III, and suggested the coil spring, almost everything else was done by Paul Laviolette.

I own this 1990 gun. Perhaps the "best " gun made. I think it is far superior to my 29-2 Smith. The Redhawk is even better than the 29-2 and probably a "meatier" gun than the Anaconda.

Had them all. The Smith 29's I had tended to develop burns in the cylinder stop notches in the cylinder and would start to loosen up the locking of the cylinder. Switching to 41 mag didn't help. The Redhawk had a lousy single action pull but was tough as nails. The super Redhawk was something I found hard my the eyes. The Anaconda' has proven to be durable, still locks up tight, is very accurate and a beauty to look at. Only complaint is the double action but all else is great.

If you learn how to hold these big guns proper then you can shoot the whole box AND keep the gun for the next box. I shot my SW29 and nearly fell victim to this, instead I learned how to hold it and control recoil better. Now I’ve got 3 44s and a SW500. Just got an anaconda, looking forward to shooting it this weekend

Colt late to the party as usual. Relatively rushed out 44 magnum revolver; over priced tuned up Trooper. Nothing like thier Python except for the barrel vents people gobbled them due to roll marks and Colts name. Really a pity. The new Anacondas are light years better and relatively cheaper than the old ones when introduced.
