No, this is not a cover, this is a complete rework. When Trent Reznor heard this, he said the song belongs to Johnny now.. Johnny did not know his wife, June, was on the stairs watching the filming, she was dying at the time, and did not want to ruin the take. When he showed this to his daughter, she said this sounds like a goodbye...Johnny said, "It is..." His wife June passed a few months after this was made, and Johnny followed her a few months later... This is a masterpiece

You summed up, all the points I was gonna make. Especially June on the stairs. He didn't know, and the look she gave him was heartbreaking.

Oh stop Trent is the man he wrote this and his version is the bomb. They both are good. Johny change one word in the lyric. The last line gives it way that this a younger man. "I will find a way" and Trent surely did.

Every time I listen to this it just guts me. You think about what your life will be like when you’re elderly and who will still be there with you. The older I get the more I crave the company of someone to talk to, someone to listen to. Youth goes by so quickly and you think you have forever. Forever is NOW. Make NOW the only moment and live your fullest life within it. Sending love and light your way. Great reaction, Maddy! ❤❤❤🙏🙏

@MaddyReactions Trent Rezner who is basically the only member and song writer in nine Inch Nails originally wrote this song for his own reasons and after Johnny Cash covered it I believe they stopped performing it with Trent saying it's now Johnny's song, he owns it because he was not only honored with Johnny covering it but was beyond impressed with his performance of the song. I can't remember what he said word for word so I didn't put that in quotes but look up his quote because it says a lot about both men. I've never heard any other artists speak about someone covering a song of theirs, especially one with such personal meaning like that.
@wishwise0
@wishwise0 2 дня назад
@@edreynolds8721 The only other song I'm aware of that had a cover that was appreciated and loved by the original artist in a similar way is Disturbed's cover of Simon and Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence.
@edreynolds8721
@edreynolds8721 2 дня назад
@wishwise0 yeah but I don't think Simon and Garfunkel said it was now Disturbed's song like Trent did. That cover is an awesome cover by the way. Didn't Alien Ant Farm cover land of confusion by Genesis? I can't remember off the top of my head but that was a great cover too. That's how songs are supposed to be covered by the way. You don't totally change the song, you just do it better than the original adding a little here and there to bring it up a level or 2. G&R's cover of Lnocking on Heavens Door is another great cover. I've been calling for Korn to cover Genesis moma for years, what do you think of that one? Listen to the original and tell me it isn't a perfect song for Korn to cover.

Hey Maddy, great heart felt reaction to a hard hitting song. As a musician and a fan of Cash, this performance cuts deep. My great uncle played with Johnny and Elvis before they were big stars and told me some great stories about them. He grew up poor on a farm in the deep south and music was a way out, literally and figuratively speaking. I think we all dream of fame and fortune sometimes,but I believe this reflects the powerful price that has been paid by so many artists. He is saying he has fame and all this material stuff, but he has hurt those around him and lost himself in the process. In the end was it worth it? Sometimes the simple things in life are the most precious.

One of the few songs that truly just hit you in the feels, that as you grow older, the meaning of lyrics are more heartfelt. So glad Johnny took a chance to do this. Coupled with his baritone are the lyrically relevant story of his life…that I believe, is the key to how this differs from the NIN version.

It is heavy heavy stuff. I grew up listening to the Downward Spiral, and Hurt was always a deep song to me. Johnny's version is brutal in such a bigger way. Trent's addiction and self hatred reflected my own view of myself in my youth, and now I listen to Johnny's and the regret and weight of his cover reflect my own. Really heavy shit lol.

Johnny did not write it but he had a bit an f uped childhood after his older brother at 14 years old fell on a saw blade while cutting a block of wood at a saw mill and died..His father took it out on him very much from the vibe I got from looking at the film Walk The Line .Chek it out when you can....

Rich or poor, beautiful or ugly we all end up the same. Death is the great equalizer. When people treat others unkind or hoard their worldly possessions they still face the same reality that we all will die and lose everything in this world. I can't know what the next world will bring or if such a place exists but kindness in life is the key to happiness.

Your analysis of this song is spot on. Johnny was my 5th cousin. I met him once at a family reunion. He was about 17, and already becoming famous. I now live about 35 miles from his childhood home (featured in this video). Amazing that he was able to so accurately describe regret and depression. My professor of economics my first year of college told us something I never forgot, and something my subsequent 55 years have proven: "To the world of commerce, you are either a product, or a consumer. You are nothing else."

In the 1990s record producer Rick Rubin saw Johnny Cash perform at a tribute concert for Bob Dylan. Rubin was so impressed with what he heard that he offered Cash a contract with his American Recordings label that was mostly known for metal and hip-hop. The two worked together on what would become six different albums from 1994 through 2010 comprised mostly of "outlaw country" reworkings of popular songs across a wide array of genres and a handful of originals. These recordings revitalized Cash's career and brought him an entirely new audience of rockers, hipsters, and yuppies. The little downtown bourgeois espresso bar I used to frequent even began playing OG country like Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, and Kris Kristofferson when these were happening. Like a lot of others have mentioned, Trent Reznor (the man who wrote the song for his own Nine Inch Nails project) has even said that Cash's version ought to be considered the definitive version. Fun fact about Johnny Cash. He was the first country artists to not just play but sell out NYC's Madison Square Garden in 1969. Many argue that was the "breakthrough" event in which "hillbilly music" had been fully embraced by the mainstream.

Got hooked on Johnny Cash about 15-20 yrs ago. With Maddys analysis makes you think about American Idol. Now there Idol shows in every country too. It’s so transparent it’s literally visible and no one really cares anyways. It’s the real music and the true talent that gets twisted and perverted to create the false idols. That’s why I always respected Rush (and others) and their music and especially their lyrics so much they gave the industry the finger and remained artists. Preach It Ma’am! ❤❤❤🫵🏼💥💥😉✌🏼😎

Johnny Cash struggled w/ drug addiction and alcoholism for decades... so, he related to the song 'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails (released in 1994) by Trent Reznor, who was struggling w/ alcoholism and addiction when he wrote the song. In any case, Johnny Cash had recorded a number of cover songs since he started in the 1950's... 'Hurt' was a cover that BECAME his song. In 2002, Johnny Cash was in failing health and kept recording songs in his studio - he had signed w/ Rick Rubin's American Recordings label in the 90's and despite being unable to tour since 1989, he found a new younger audience buying his records... He finished the 'American IV: The man comes around' album in '02 and knowing that he was dying... he filmed the music video for 'Hurt' w/ his wife June Carter as a way of saying 'goodbye' and giving a glimpse of his career and what happens to 'legends' when they are past their prime... forgotten and left behind for the most part. 'Hurt' became a huge single in 2003 and gave Johnny Cash one last taste of massive success and critical acclaim ... Sadly, his wife June Carter passed away from her own health complications in May of '03... a heartbroken Johnny Cash quietly said in an interview that he would pass away soon... Johnny Cash died in Sept. '03 at age 71... just months after June Carter. Rick Rubin oversaw the release of Johnny Cash's final recordings - 'American V: A hundred highways' in 2006... and "American VI: Ain't no grave" in 2010.

This is by far your best reaction. Thanks for being vulnerable with us. This one cuts the onions for me too. Your analysis is spot on. I've always thought the last life of the song is so depressing and also, strangely affirming at the same time; for all the regret he has, at the end he knows himself. Pardon if I wax somewhat ineloquently for a moment... He knows what he regrets, who he is and isn't denying or lying to himself; he's looking at the end and isn't taking himself, "you really lived a life l without regrets, to its fullest, and as He called you to be! No sorrow here as the ride winds down." How many people live 80 years in their own body with their own mind and even at the end don't know themselves well enough to have real talk to themselves or to God? There are people out there that think if they could do it all again they'd name different choices when though 80 years of new mornings and new starts have come and gone and not once did they change out have different choices. These are the saddest people in my estimation. I can't imagine how you il could have any kind of relationship with anyone if don't know yourself. A lifetime without a single deep connection to even themselves. Sorry for getting off topic, but that last line has always been so bitter sweet to me.
