This one scared me... S54 Powered 1979 BMW E21

I've driven some lairy cars before but never have I felt as scared as I did driving this E21 around Donington. It's powered by an E46 M3 S54B32 engine, in a car from 1979.
A mixture of ridiculous pace, lack of traction, and the stopping power of a road bike made for an interesting time at Donington Park.

Now then Dan! I ran e21 for years. They look great but not great handling. We developed a quick rack with Kyle Clinton in Midlands as OE rack is woeful at 4:1 ratio. Makes catching them so much easier. Check the County Race BMW Championship on RU-vid. I uploaded it a few years back. Plenty of track e21 stuff on my channel for anyone interested. 😊

Love it.. over 20yrs ago I fitted a tuned m30 3.5ltr dog box 3.04 lsd tubular manifold ect.. 280bhp maybe to a E21 … only car I would pat the dashboard when we got home.. 😜👍👍👍

Best looking E series hands down. Use to walk past one on my way to school as kid (in the mid 90’s) a black one, BBS splittys tucked right into the arches. Thought it was the most gangster thing ever

Hilarious. That engine sounds amazing. Our E21 is a late 83 model, it has the e30 style mirrors, which don’t look as retro, but are more functional.

Must be an old german car thing as 70s 911s seem to get the same review, and they sorta kept the same recipe but refined it more n more over the years until they got it right, and thank god they did lol. I think "extremely cool but unrefined" would be the best description. Sick car though, and again, sick vidya Dan 👍 glad u survived 😂

I used to have e21 323 race car. It was navy blue fully caged with a fuel cell in the boot fiberglass bonnet and boot. I'd love to see the car again maybe buy it back. It was the last car my Dad saw me drive on a track before he died. If anyone knows where it is please get in touch. Cheers Great video Danny 👍

Looks like a handful. A lot of torque for such an old car and I'd imagine the weight distribution is a bit strange with that block? I'd love to see you drive an S2K on track.

did the brakes have bite if you pushed them hard enough? Sounds similar to my car which until recently the pushrod was too short going into the master cylinder. Would be an easy thing to get wrong with a servo delete.

I don’t think a lot of folk get brake cylinder / pistons setup right when throwing on different stuff. Maybe needs a pedal box then cylinders to suit - if no servo prob smaller than the evo ones

E21 is too flexy and light for S54 without the cage. E36 Compact with the same rear suspension, with the right setup and wing on the back can be fast and tamed for track use!

Get a new final drive with a taller ratio and if you are using the 21 trans dump that for a zf310 or 320 and you will be fine .The car is not set up for track speed and certainly upgrade those brakes , its crucial.

TLDR the best way to describe these and E28's espesh engine swapped ones is: Look Sick/Drive SHIT! I drove a e28 with a m52b28 and it was all over the place on the front end in the wet on cambered roads/bumps/crossing roundabouts, the steering redefines aids! Worst bmw I've ever driven and it was mint with everything done to it. I was extremely disapointed. Thank god the e30/34 fixed this!
