I love that you show the “not so great” setbacks- it’s much more realistic and encouraging to see that the dogs sometimes don’t fully “get it” even when they seem to. Also love that you don’t use any fancy equipment or prong collars or anything! We took in an older dog who was abandoned at the boarding facility where I groom after his owner died- he was a street dog and then more or less an outside dog getting fed by the “owner” so we have no clue about his past. Training him has been challenging compared to the dog I adopted when she was still under a year old and these videos really help!

I have always taught my dogs 'wait'. They are taught to never go first through any door or gate until I say it's okay. Even then, they walk through. The command 'wait' is invaluable. The dogs learn to 'wait' when I open a car door (no bolting out of the car and into traffic), a gate, a door, even entering a room. So for me, we go to the door to go for a walk, I say 'wait' and then proceed on our walk. Even my Jack Russell Terrorist did this. Terriers tend to be more work, but they are fabby dogs if you have the right personality to get on with them.

Great info. I trained my doggo by not moving when the leash was tight with tension. I'd wait till he sat down. Took forever, but he got the message...till he sees a cat. That's another battle.

Same here. If Tammy Dog was pulling hard on the leash I just stood still until she let it go slack. Also taught her to "heel" that way.

Great advice, Dave, my 15 month Golden Retriever (Re-homed by me at 8 months had NEVER been walked on a lead by his first owner so was initially a ‘challenge’!). My approach was similar to yours except that I began earlier than the front door; first by having him sit calmly in the utility room BEFORE putting the lead on, then with lead on we sit for a short while, then moved to the front door, then “sit/stay” until he looks at me….open door, then “OK”, then outside the door “wait” until I’ve locked the door and finally “let’s go”. I’m still working on improving the loose lead walking using quick ‘pops’ every few seconds when he starts to move ahead of me……my experience is that everything takes time and PATIENCE…..nothing happens quickly! My main challenge now is dog reactivity as Dave wasn’t socialised as a young puppy……any advice on dealing with this would be welcome 🦮🇬🇧

I'm going to start this tomorrow morning! My Cavapoo sits patiently at the door, and makes great eye contact while I open the door. Then when I "Let's go potty," she darts out & I'm yanking her back, and saying "With me!" She loves to run out because she knows there may be squirrels or cats in the yard. Avery is 8 months and is super fun, cute & cuddley but still cannot meet people calmly.... lots of work on that to ge done!! Thx Carol for another great video!

Now that he got his last set of core vaccines, I took him to take the trash with me and he actually behaved pretty well! It all starts from before you leave the door. Thank you guys for all the amazing content. I haven’t owned a puppy in a decade and it’s been a lot easier this time around 💕

@Daniel Nguyen A tired dog is a good dog! Get him out walking, a lot. Corgis have a lot of energy! You can teach him to stay down by putting a leash on him, put your foot on it if he jumps and tell him, off! One word commands are the way to go. Praise him when he does it right. I wish you all the best! 🐕💕

@@wandastokley1871 i know corgi has a lot of energy but according to the vet, they said dont let puppy under 1 year (mine is 5 months now) run a lot due to their bone and joint are still growing, and corgi are prone to hip dysplasia, so I usually play tug-of-war with him, I tried to train him walk nicely but still he just run like maniac, I guess I need more time

i have a more than 1 year old male doberman. he pulls when he saws stray cats or dog when we walk. i noticed that his excitement as we leave our front yard gate is more of going to his usual spots to pee or poop. after that, he's calmer, except when he sees that cat or dog. not aggressive with the dogs, just wants to play with them - except those BMs and Huskies. i would very much like to know what to do so we can enoy our walks together, although when i give a couple tugs on his lease, he backs down. but when i relax my hold on his leash, he goes at it again. most of the times, i keep him on a short leash, just so. he is definitely not treats motivated when out on our walks - i noticed he is more responsive to a loud command from me.

A discussion came up today, and I hope you see this question. Your dogs are well trained; would you trust them to walk along a wooded subdivision road off leash? Mine is never off leash, because we have rabbits and deer in our area that will be motionless until you get really close, then will bolt out of the grass/trees. Our BC will "stand down" at squirrels, and is really obedient and responsive, but I just don't trust her instincts. Hope I get an answer; maybe my expectations are too small.
@berrymilk337
@berrymilk337 Год назад
Probably not. The problem is that if your dog gets away you will never catch them. You need some kind of safety net if your dog goes crazy for a squirrel and tries to run off. My dog is well trained but I know if she really wants to go after something I'd lose her and I cannot risk that. However, I do take my dog to a large local park and let her off leash there. She's been very good but that is because I'm using a shock collar and she's been trained to stay within a 15-20m orbit around me. I've almost never had to shock her, usually a beep works. I'm not a big fan of the shock collar but it's a great tool if you use it sparingly. My dog loves to put it on because it gives her freedom like she never gets without it. Hope that helps.
@yvonnestreeter2820
@yvonnestreeter2820 Год назад
@@berrymilk337 Thank you so much for your input. I agree with you; it's not worth the risk. I did buy an E-collar, but haven't used it yet, and maybe it's time to do that. To be able to let her be free would be so worth it.

My dog will try to burst off of the front step like Storm does later in the video. You mention that you should walk circles, but my front step is nowhere near the size needed to do that. So my options would be to go back inside or step off the step onto the walkway where there is more space. So should I go back inside?

It was "MAN" who domesticated what has become "DOG'S". And it wasn't done by the what's become the dog's choice. It is the doing of "MAN". Meaning if one doesn't control their dog, the dog will control the man. I find it ironic how we human's state in no uncertain terms we are the more intelligent biological life form and yet there are those that allow an supposedly less intelligent aka lower form of biological life; To contorl them. Parent's are obsessed with and mandate their children whom are intelligent to obey various rule's regulations and law's they may have while raising them to adulthood. But allow an unintelligent dog to rule them.

@eurodrubentiger I love that you are so aware of timing!! And, like everyone, I am sure there are many times my timing is wrong. I looked at this section. I marked the choice to focus on me with my “yes”. But I’m thinking I chose to hold off. If you notice inside I yes the tiniest first glance at me. But here, Storm has connected with me a bit by now and the look now is far calmer and focused. So I’m thinking I felt I didn’t need the reward at that point. I absolutely use food (toys, and any other reinforcer) that will help me reinforce the behaviours I want. But I’m also looking to wean off those treats. When the behaviour becomes rewarding itself I can start to use less. Hopefully that makes sense.
