I wholeheartedly agree --- twists for the win! When I was doing flat twists back to back for months, that's when I noticed the most growth. My routine was consistent - shampoo and DC every week like clockwork. No fuss, just simple.

Yessss! I tried telling people that twists were the wave when looking to grow natural hair. I just love how easy they are to do and they don’t require a great deal of skill to install. It is literally a style that anyone can manage week by week. It’s the perfect protective style in my opinion. No stress and tension on the hairline or hair itself. It really helps create a consistent routine conducive for hair growth and length retention. Thank you for watching and commenting!

My hair is healthier since I quit wearing extension braids. You are correct. It is almost impossible to moisturize your hair when it's locked into extensions. I moisturize at least 4 nights a week -- my hair needs it.
@CammyjOfficial
@CammyjOfficial 2 года назад
Hello 👋🏾 Randa! Thank you for watching and commenting! I have definitely found it difficult to keep hair moisturized when keeping in a “protective style” with hair added for a long time. If anything I’ve experienced breakage from my hair being left in a dry state for so long.
@RandaWise
@RandaWise 2 года назад
@@CammyjOfficial Exactly! There is really no such thing as "protective styling", at least not in the context people think it is. It's all about keeping your hair from tangling into fairy knots and locking. I twist my hair every night, style it into a high puff during the day and moisturize at least 4 nights a week. We have to do what our hair needs. Each of us will have a different regimen because of genetics, porosity, density, environment etc. I also found it helpful to spritz the scalp with water when I do moisturize. I always wondered why my nails always grew quicker than my hair --- probably because our hands touch water more.
@CammyjOfficial
@CammyjOfficial 2 года назад
@@RandaWise oh yes I definitely agree that “protective styles” aren’t really protecting a thing 😂😂 based on how we are deciding to wear our hair. Maybe I should do a video on that. I definitely agree that everyone should do what’s best for their hair because as you said, everyone’s hair will have different needs.

Hello JK! I definitely understand what you’re saying. I have a friend who does mini twists instead because her natural hair is fine/thinner. Hi sistah. You are correct. I either do a twist out or high puff. People think that leaving your hair in braids for weeks and months is protecting the hair. Protecting from what? Hair needs to be moisturized and detangled, and depending on our hair's porosity, length and density, that might be 4 days a week, 1 or 2 days a week. For me, I have to constantly make sure my hair isn't tangling. I cannot do that when it's braided or cornrowed for months. What happens is that it locks and I cannot properly moisturize. You are on point, I'm right with you.

Hello Randa! I’ve learned my lesson from leaving a “protective style” in too long. Breakage on top of breakage. Girl I saw those white bumps on my head. My stylist before doing my hair said.."oh wow your hair is so long and thick." After that she said she wants to do a "new hairstyle" i will love. 🤦🏾‍♀️ What she did to me took me 3 weeks to recover from the itchiness and I swear. And she knows I hate hate tight styles. I told her not to do them tight and she listen to me. But child.. there was one area on my head. Just one little small area that she braided hella tight. I felt it and told her take that braid out now. I am not paying for this if they are tight. She did exactly as I said but still braided it tight. 🤦🏾‍♀️ she said oh don't worry your scalp sensitive today. And my friend was like 👀. So I got tired and said..."it's fine. It's just one tiny spot." Boy was I soo wrong. That one tiny spot 😭 after going home and spraying my hair with water got a few tiny bumps. I panic and used oils. Massage, massage, massage. That one small tiny area showed a lot of white bumps. My family said..."Jessica that spot there, where all that white bumps is...Girl you waited too long. If you take that one braid out. You will see hair coming out." My mom examined my hair and said why did she braided the starting so tight. Girl after a week... that area that was tight I felt the hair kind of loosen at that starting point. I said to myself..."My braids don't feel slack until a month. Why this feel so?" After continuously touching my hair and wondering why the spot where the white bumps are....why this one feels loose. I said damn 😑 I think the loose braided area I'm feeling is the area I lost hair. Sorry if this is kinda hard to read. Lol my English isn't so well. 😁

Great video! I wholeheartedly agree. I've been natural for over 20 yrs and still struggle with length retention despite pampering my hair. I had to think back to when my hair was its healthiest and longest and it was when I wore two-strand twists consistently. Not only do two-strand twists help to retain moisture but it also stretches out the hair which, for me, helps prevent tangling and knots. It also is a good way for me to trim my ends. I also leave my hair uncovered while in the shower, allowing it to benefit from the moisture and I'm not worried about messing up my style. I love twists.

And keep my ends tucked away. Since I’ve been working out more and changed to a healthier diet, in addition to the 2 strand twists and scalp massages, I notice my hair seems to be retaining more length the last 4 months. Shalawam! You hit it right on the nail. And also a lot of the weaves we put in our hair from those other nations sacrifice their hair in the name of their gods, which we should stay away from. As well as the synthetic hair has a lot of chemicals that damage our hair. There's also a spiritual aspect why our hair doesn't grow or why we struggle with it so much. The best protective styles for our hair is using our own hair and nothing else. Our hair is so versatile it is supreme, we've just been conditioned from birth to do things we do today. I love the idea of just focusing on one or two styles while growing hair out. A 2-strand twist can be one of those for me, particularly for rainy weeks, but I need to blowout my hair and then put in 4 chunky braids every other time. Otherwise I get too much breakage at the ends from shrinkage and knotting. My hair was trained in dreadlocks for decades, and just wants to go back to that. My Revair is my best styling device. But weeks where it rains every day, even keeping in stretched braids will have me untangling knots on wash day.

Currently wearing twists rn 😁 I used to do them a lot in high school, because I didn't like the way braids looked in my hair after the big chop. And they really did help with the growth. You not lying! 😂 Now I switch between braids n twists, but only using my own hair. With extensions I could always feel the weight, whether done by a professional or myself, and my scalp isn't even sensitive. Currently I'm growing my edges back, I was learning to cornrow, thought I did them loose enough, and took them down disappointed. Oh, well! This isn't the first time my edges said look for me 👀 It definitely is a learning experience, I'll make sure to not do it again 😅

Hello 👋🏾 Sonté! Thank you for sharing your experience! Yeah after I big chopped I didn’t like the way the braids looked on me either so twists were what I leaned to. Wigs look crazy on me. My sister has been doing my hair since I could remember, every time she installs a wig on me she says “why’re you doing this? I thought I told you your forehead can’t do it 😅 …. My hair has a hard time being in extensions but I’m not comfortable with my current length. :( I think headband wigs have been breaking the nape of my hair off.

Hi 👋🏾 beautiful! Thank you so much for stopping by!!! Yes less is more when it comes to natural hair growth and Keneth retention overall in my experience. You can definitely get braids, I’m not saying their inherently bad, just be careful of how tight they are done and how long you keep them in. PREACH, Sis-Star! Everything you say is music to my ears. I decided to stop all the braids, refollowing a brilliant Trichologist, here, in the UK, who has 4c high porosity hair, similar to mine. I am going to follow her advice. I am going to be patient. Choose and buy the best products for MY hair type, and though I'm not very skilled (or particularly patient 😤🥱), with braiding, I'm going to start it, practice, restart, until I am happy. Due to old health, lifelong medications, personal stress, finances etc. I no longer want to sit in my hair stylist, buying and getting installed false hair. Nothing wrong with it for others, but I know I can be lazy, and as you pointed out, not being able to get the necessary moisture to penetrate my hair, due to the installed synthetic hair braids, I am removing said synthetic hair braids, to find dry, tangled, lack lustre natural hair underneath. And I'm paying handsomely for that state? No more. Bless you for imparting us sistas with such valuable knowledge. Your hair and makeup are da bomb, by the way! 👌🏾

Hello hello 👋🏾! It was definitely a journey for me, but I wanted to really focus on length retention. I have nothing against other styles, but this is what worked best for me. Thank you for the compliments on my hair. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Lol sis ! You said everybody are losing them & you not trying to be one of those people ! Girl I’m with you! It’s a lot of us out here losing edges! & girl I’ve been thinking about wigs for a while but I really think I also do not have the head for it 😂

LOL! I promise you that every time I put on a wig I look STRANGEEEE 😂😂😂!!! Can’t do it! Yes I need to have edges. I’ve seen so many videos of young back women having to get hair transplants because braids and other tight styles stole their edges clean off. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!!

Yes! I alternate between plaits and twists. My hair is bra length in my longest layer so them plaits are getting to take too long lol so I might transition to only twists soon.

Hello 👋🏾! I like twists also because they don’t take as long to do as plaits like you mentioned. Alternative between those is definitely a good way to not get bored with just doing one style. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I would love to try this out long term but I have a super corporate sales job where we have to dress up for meetings and traveling twice a month, I’ve always felt like “natural” styles don’t fit the corporate mold that they want you to.. but I’m about to say screw it, my hair comes first 😅.. maybe I’ll just wear a wig when I travel.. this video was very informative and motivating

Hello 👋🏾! Do whatever makes you feel most comfortable. I’ve worn my hair natural for 10 years now in my corporate jobs without issue. They just had to accept that this is black hair and as a black woman ima wear it out. Wigs are also a good alternative as long as you allow your hair time to breathe. You can also wear your hair in a twist out during the day and just twist it at night to protect the style. Thank you for watching and commenting! Im glad this video was helpful to you!

I left my protective crochet style in easy too long listening to somebody else project their lack onto me saying you can get some more out of that it still look good. You don’t need to take that out😟😏😏😏😥😥🥴🥴🥴 Hair was DRY, MATTED, Shedding and breakage like crazy. 😭 Neva again.

me too. my mom convinced me to get my hair braided and wait another week to take my hair down which turned into 3 weeks. my hair was braided too tight which caused sooo much shedding , my edges came out and my hair was so dry and tangled.

I completely agree. Other styles tend to pull and stress the strands

Hello 👋🏾 Chris! Yes for me other styles do pull hair so I stay away from them as long term styles. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Thank you so much for reaffirming how gentle your must be with your natural hair. Just to add I heard extensions themselves dry out your hair. I heard this the other day xxx

Hello 👋🏾! You’re welcome ☺️. I truly believe in treating our hair with kindness. Some extensions can dry out the hair, depending on the type of hair it is as well. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Thanks for the video, yes two strand twist are growing my hair, QUESTION- how to protect at night to look fresh for the next day.

Hello 👋🏾! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. I always wear a satin bonnet at night or use a satin pillowcase. This helps maintain the style and keep it looking fresh the next day. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

I love watching your videos and I’m only 3 years in my natural hair journey and just now learning how to leave my hair alone 😄 but lately I have been only doing twist and knotless braid but I only leave them up for 3 weeks. So I’m going to try only doing twist and see what happens because I would love to have healthy long hair and Thank you for the tips

Hello 👋🏾! I am so happy to hear you love ❤️ watching my videos. That means a lot to me! I did a 1 year twist challenge. You can start by doing a 90 day challenge for a 6 month challenge to start out smaller. Leaving your hair alone is really the best kept secret to natural hair length retention. When I was doing a whole bunch of styles week after week my hair was suffering BIG TIME. That’s why I had to show that breakage picture cause my hair had had enough 😂! She was sick of me flipping and flopping with these styles. Thank you for watching and commenting!!!

My hair is a mix of textures. And my hair is very fine. Twists are a nightmare for me. But, I’ll try it again anyway.

Hello 👋🏾! Are you doing them very small? If twists are too much of hassle, then try doing plates/braids instead.
