Unsolicited Patreon Endorsement (I hope this is okay): Alex does a great job in providing information in his reviews that help people choose games that are appropriate their preferences and avoid spending money on games that have a greater chance of being disappointing. The information provided in this video is more value added. I would strongly encourage viewers to pass on some of what they save by supporting Alex’s Patreon - I think he more than earns it. Thank you, Alex!

Alex - Shipping information good but mostly stuff I was aware of. However, the buying tools you reviewed were awesome! I can’t believe after developing a passion for this hobby at the start of COVID this is information that was still largely new to me! Well done and thank you. Your channel never disappoints!

Tips for shipping that I use: 1) Save boxes from Amazon, Hello Fresh, etc. 2) Use small bubble wrap around the game (it keeps the box that is being packed in from being larger than it needs to be while at the same time protecting the game. 3) Use plastic grocery bags to place inside the box for any empty spaces, so contents don't shift around in the board game itself. 4) Score boxes so that they are roughly 1" extra around all sides of the board game. This keeps the box size as small as possible while also keeping the game from moving around and tightly packed. I usually get surprised questions about how I'm able to ship things cheaper than anyone else. I've been able to ship games the size of Blood Rage for about $12. It shouldn't ever cost $10+ to ship a game the size of a Tiny Epic game or a set of 12 promo cards.

Thanks for sharing. You're awesome. I typically ship/mail 2-3 items a week. Trying to save on shipping is even more important today with the increased shipping costs. One thing to add - USPS offers free Priority Mail boxes. They simply ask that you only use them for Priority Mail. I use a lot of their boxes.

That BGG auction search is incredible, thanks for sharing that. I’ve been using Board Game Atlas for a bit now, got it from 3 Minute Board games, it’s pretty good. I remember a couple years ago selling a big batch of games to Boardgameco and the instructions were to get the games in one box, I’m sure up to a limit idk, but I took two giant boxes and essentially encased the games like a plastic egg at Easter time, except the two boxes didn’t close exactly but I taped the whole thing down, I’m sure that was too heavy and a sight to see.

Thank you Alex. I live overseas and two points you have stated in this video are particularly relevant: you should always ship with USPS if possible (as you have said, it is much more customs-friendly than Fedex and Dhl), secondly you should try to keep your packages small (around 3 TTR-size games + a couple of small ones for example).

Finally discovered PirateShip recently, thank God. Recently acquired a ton of games through an estate sale and have been selling them off. Knowing about PirateShip earlier would have made some the sales more appealing for potential buyers when giving shipping quotes (like, for say, the all-in Joan of Arc pledge...ugh) but I found it now and its been super effective with trades. I knew about some of these other tools but not all of them. Thanks for going through this, Alex!

So glad you brought up international shipping and import fees. I heavily dislike courier companies for international shipping, because they slap on so many bogus extra fees on the receiver end (like fees for having different category of items in the package). I've had cases where I wound up having to pay more in fees to the courier company afterwards than what I originally paid for the items+shipping. I now strictly avoid places that ship through UPS and DHL for this very reason.

Alex, these companies make money by not passing onthe entire discount they receive from the companies. They get a discount by telling the companies they will ship X number of items. And they get a discount based on volume. If the volume exceeds the promised number, they get a higher discount the following contract. If it's less, nothing happens.

If you ship via Staples, Office Depot and/or independent shipping companies (stores?) you will get a discount. Walmart (in some locations but rolling out to others) has a shipping kiosk that is cheaper than shipping direct. There are websites that can give you shipping rates across carriers.
@destrio

Fuel costs, inflation, and board game bling are only making shipping more painful for board game enthusiasts. I think when you buy games from the secondary market, the seller isn't always incentivized to look for a cheap shipping option because that takes work to no benefit. The buyer already purchased or agreed to pay shipping, so I always appreciate it when sellers go the extra mile to minimize the cost. We owe a lot to carriers who take great things to our doorstep but that service is expensive. Appreciate the video!

USPS has agreements with other federal mail services to avoid customs brokerage costs. Here in Canada, UPS has their own customs brokerage business, and thus, they love to rack up those charges for profits. They tried to nail me with a $75 charge before for customs brokerage charges, while I was working as a customs broker. I did my own clearance for free. But they will often do it automatically and then charge you. I just knew who to contact to fight it. FedEx does have contracts with customs brokers, and I believe they are an owner one, but not sure they've put it under their name.

In the UK the big thing those starting out shipping packages need to know if the use Royal Mail is NEVER buy the shipping in a post office - the rate online is sometimes more than 50% cheaper and the post office workers don’t have ‘access’ to these prices. Order shipping online and if you send an extra 60p the Royal Mail will even pick it up for you and bring the label.

At what percentage of a game price should shipping be? For me if shipping is more than 25% of the game price then I am very very hesitant to purchase (Im in Japan). But with things going the way they are lately... 25% might be reasonable?

Regarding international shipping, if you go UPS or Fedex, you need to select a shipping option that handles customs by the shipper. They cost a bit more, but indeed will save a bunch of trouble for the person at the receiving end.

You did great! 5 comments on this video. 1 Never ship anything you care about USPS. 2. Reddit has a hot deals that is great to follow. 3. Honey can track price drops and history. 4. Distance you are shipping plays a huge role in what you will pay. Shipping to the east coast can be twice as much as shipping just a few states away for me. 5 If you are selling with a site like ebay and they have a partnership with a payment system. (PAYPAL) use the PayPal system to ship because they give you a discount on the shipping.

Ahh, shipping to Australia, its now so expensive that it is often unfeasible. Last few months I've passed on multiple purchases because of prohibitive shipping costs to Australia, it is terrible for board games, frequently the cost of the game is less than the cost of the shipping.

One thing you didn't address: shipping weight. When using services such as Pirate Ship, I'm guessing you need to know the exact weight of what you're shipping. Do you just go to your local post office and use their scale or do you use your own? Would a simple bathroom scale work or would that not be accurate enough with smaller packages? If you do own a dedicated shipping scale, do you have recommendations for others on what to purchase? I definitely want to start culling games, so the more intel, the better. Great video!
@ESPNY1
@ESPNY1 2 года назад
Can you comment on type of printer recommendation? So besides a scale you also need a decent printer with paper and supplies, Maybe a reason why people may not go all the way in with shipping efficiently or cheaply.

I agree that Pirate Ship is great. The only time I haven't used it recently is when sending a promo card to Canada. Pirate Ship wanted to send it Priority Mail instead of letter weight (with cardboard inside to prevent bending) which was $12 more.
@BbBb-zx6sx
@BbBb-zx6sx 2 года назад
And it arrived undamaged? Amazing. I work for USPS as a mechanic who repairs the letter sorting machines. Every night, I remove pieces of mail like this that get caught in the machines. Usually they are damaged or destroyed. Items like that should not be sent in letter size envelopes. Yeats a recipe for failure. They should be packed in a padded envelope and sorted on those machines. BTW only damaged mail gets sorted by hand, by a person.
