I'm about to install a Comma 3X in a 2021 Outback. The installation should be quite similar to the one described here. The 2021 Outback is very similar to the 2020, and the 3X has a slightly different shaped mount than the 3 but it uses the same software and the device is the same size. I'll definitely come back here with further comment if it DOESN"T work. Probably if it does work too, but certainly if I have issues.

Definitely works. I was borrowing the 3 from a buddy. I got myself the 3X a few weeks later and it plugged right into the same harness. I think it’s 22 or 23 where Subaru changed to the encrypted system that hasn’t been hacked yet.

Works very well in the '21 Outback, but torque for lateral control isn't nearly as good as on the '22 Niro EV. Can't handle sharper curves on the Outback. Still definitely worth the price for the 3X. Hands-free and great driver assist on the highway, but NOT exactly self-driving (and I don't EVER want full self-driving anyway). As noted, encryption will lock out most 2023+ Outback models from working with the 3X (:

Not yet 😔 I believe I read somewhere it’s because they moved to a new encrypted data transfer method. I was talking to a friend and we both agree we won’t buy a car without comma support now, it just makes life too great and it wouldn’t be worth going back to a car without its assistance. Never thought I would say that!!

Does unplugging the Comma system from OBD2 port and restarting the vehicle, restore the stock adaptive cruise and lane keeping feature? I want to give the Comma system a try, but don't want it to permanently change anything in the car's firmware.

It changes nothing at all in the Subaru's firmware or settings, far as I can tell. Simply unplugging the device from its cable immediately restores the Subaru, and the '22 Niro EV, to stock. Not sure if just unplugging the OBD2 connector will do the same - that's just used for powering the 3X. I don't know how much power the 3X gets from the assembly behind the mirror when disconnected from OBD2.

Yes it reverts to the original system. Doesn’t change anything to the software of the Subaru system. Totally independent.
