To be fair this is a low volume ultra compact pc with a lot of performance. Not really going to find a desktop pc of this capability this small. It's not for everyone for sure though, myself included. 😂

While this is an ultra small form factor, The price is outrageous. If you want small form factor to just play games, Buy a console. If you want the exact same specs as this mini PC and don't care too much about form factor, Buy a larger desktop. Asus is selling their desktop PCs for $500 cheaper than this mini PC with the same exact specs.

Also, a slightly larger mini pc (there are many gorgeous cases out there) can fit a true RTX 4070 which is a lot faster, like bob showed.. You will save some money and get A LOT more power.

@@ArtzyWeasel For $500, I would buy a console. It offers less performance and less graphical fidelity but overall very acceptable. A PC offers a lot more, but you need to be an enthusiast. Hobbies cost money is what I always say 😅

@@RanmaSaotome1_2 You can't get a 4070ti, 4080 or 4090, but a real RTX 4070 is a major upgrade over a mobile 4070. It's not even in the same league. There are a lot of beautiful small pc cases that can house a real 4070. So spending 2.1k could bring you a lot more than what you get in this particular mini pc.

@@DeadAmericanBestAmerican Just so you know you are incorrect. The Laptop 4060 is on average 3 to 6 percent slower than Desktop 4060. A full powered Mobile 4070 found in this device and many other laptops perform 15 to 20 percent better than the 4060 chip and is on par with a 4060ti Desktop.

I’d love to see it working with Bazzite. Edit: Also with this kind of PCs the best thing you can do is completely erase the OS, reinstall it w/o bloatware and install the drivers one by one checking the Device Manager, but probably with an updated W11 you’ll only need the GPU driver.

Legit get a ROG Ally or an old laptop and you can do that. I use my ROG Ally for Clone Hero and even Guitar Hero World Tour Deluxe (I love seeing the characters and venues in the back) and they run flawlessly.

Hey Wullf, get rid of Armory Crate and install GHelper instead. Way less bloaty, more efficient. Also 85w TDP is kinda low, there are ROG laptops with 4070s that push 100w in a smaller form factor for less money.

I don't get the complaints about large power bricks. You can't fight physics. You either are going to have the components needed inside the shell (like an OG Xbox) or in a huge brick (like the Xbox 360). It's always better to have it external. Even those of us that know what we are doing do not like dealing with internal (and mostly exposed) PSUs for repairs. If anything, you should complain about anything not using USB-C for power delivery. Unless it needs more than 240W, everything should be using USB-C. Period. As better technologies are developed in providing power (like GaN chargers) you can simply swap out an outdated brick.

as people have pointed out you can get a comparable Laptop for ~the same price. For ~the same price (a little cheaper depending) you could build a mini ITX desktop that's barely larger than the xbox and have enough for a monitor and a full 4070 super (that's more powerful than the mobile version that thing has)

Really cool to see some more PC hardware on the channel! I think a slightly larger mini PC (something like a Fractal Design Terra) would be much better in terms of performance and pricing. (Like Bob showed, a true RTX 4070 is A LOT faster than a mobile RTX 4070, the mobile 4070 can barely keep up with an RTX 3060)

14:50 And this is the point where my somewhat slow desktop would have reached it's desktop, not counting password entry or disabling fast boot. While a minute isn't long, it really does feel like it when you just want to sit down and play a game. Though then Steam does add significant time too, unless waking a Deck from sleep instead of cold-starting it. The latter is still latter slow, especially if the darn thing plays dead for exactly a minute after pressing the power button, like mine occasionally does.

Devices like these make me wonder if Valve will ever revive the "steam machines" and go with a form factor/performance like this. But put Steam OS on it like the Steam Deck. They could afford to sell it at a bit of a loss to bring the price down, since you'll be buying your games on Steam.

Or they can work together with AMD and component partners. Basically let Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock, or anyone to sell basically motherboard with embedded AMD SoC in it. Steam is simply saying that SteamOS will work as well as handheld console when you use the product. Vendors can make a system around it and sell it as a barebone or simply sell the motherboard. If Steam can make a Steam Deck costs $300 with custom chip, storage, display, battery, controller, RAM, and other compinents. Selling simply a motherboard could be produced cheaper. Heck... if Valve can sell motherboard with embedded SoC that can run games... I will pay $300 simply for the motherboard. I'll pay the other components by myself.

my use case for a mini PC like this is travel: if you have to move often between countries, carrying your entire desktop PC in a dedicated extra case (that then goes in the airplane hold) gets annoying very quickly. I personally have had to travel quite a lot between countries between college and seeing my family for the holidays and I would've killed for a small PC I could literally bring in my backpack. The price is definitely very high, so I'd look into what other brands are doing

The OEM of a certain SFF PC with an i9 12900H, thunderbolt (for that sweet eGPU dock) USB 3.2, 32gb of DDR5 RAM, 2 m.2 Slots (a 1tb nvme included) and two 2.5 inch drive bays, and a copy of Windows 11 is a bit over 500 dollars on TEMU. Hook up a 100 dollar eGPU dock and you skipped about 500 dollars of hardware upgrades (New motherboard, new cpu, DDR5 ram) can still use your current GPU, and have a 14-core, 20-thread MADLY efficient machine and GPU that can sit on a 3 foot desk.

Since you reviewed using Bazzite on the ROG Ally recently, I do wonder how good it would work on this mini PC. You'd essentially make it into a modern day Steam Machine, similar to what Valve had in the mid 2010s but significantly more powerful and with a more refined/newer version of SteamOS.

For the last 10 years I have spent around 5 months out of each year living abroad and traveling, and I think a PC like this would have been great to get a desktop experience while abroad. I would travel with a laptop but the experience wasn't very good. Where I live (while abroad) is very remote and PC tech/ support is hard to find and expensive, so being able to travel with my PC is a most. Given what I have spent building a gaming PC abroad and maintaining it the price for this PC seems not completely unreasonable, however I don't think I would have gotten it either way.

I think this is going to be my next device. I travel for work and I like to connect a monitor keyboard and mouse even with a laptop. This would be easy to travel with and it has great power for 1080p and 1440p gaming. My desktop sits at home when I’m on the road and the steam deck isn’t enough power for my FPS games I like to play.

I guess it made me feel better about me building my own home theater pc for $1600 and having a more powerful unit, sure I'm putting it in a mid atx case so won't be as small, but I will have a PC running a Ryzen 5 7600X with a RX 7700XT with 4tb of storage running Nobara Linux for a more steam deck os operating feel. This ASUS Noc is more for someone without techincal knowledge who wants a gaming laptop performance without the mobility and screen in a small console form factor with a very questionable customer service response if anything goes wrong from ASUS.

If you already have a good desktop and don't need to use it and the living room PC at the same time i feel like a cheaper NUC with no GPU and a decent CPU would work as a great streaming PC and accomplish the same thing this would with an even smaller footprint. P.S. a steam controller is an amazing device for navigating a desktop you still need steam to open with windows but you can fine tune the controller to work incredibly well plus the on screen keyboard works just like the steam deck and a lot of the controls for shortcuts like the keyboard and screenshots are the same as the deck by default. Yeah i know they were discontinued but i found a second one recently for like 30 bucks so if you can get ahold of one or have one lying around i recommend it over basically every other option.

For about a tenth of the price or maybe less a Lenovo ThinkCentre Mini with a CPU one or two generations ago is usually more than enough for that retro arcade build before even considering upgrading the hard drive and/or RAM _and_ has a similar footprint to a Nintendo Wii.

I would say the title, specifically about being "more powerful than a console", is pretty misleading. The 4070M is slower than a 6600XT, according to TechPowerUP, and the PS5 is generally considered to fall between the 6600XT and 6700. This computer is 4x more expensive than a PS5, and also probably slower too!

I don't think windows "boot into steam big picture" is a problem, because it can already do it, you just have to wait for windows to load and then it loads steam. I believe there's a windows workaround to make steam load first but I haven't tried it because I don't have a living room pc so I don't need it

nVidia shipping 8gb on "4070" mobile chips is just asinine. Planned obsolescence at its most obvious. We're well past the point where 8gb isn't enough for games to render at high settings in 1080p without stuttering as assets are moved in and out of VRAM. For a device that can handle 4K, it's not okay

A custom Mini ITX build is cheaper and I wouldnt count on Asus helping you get stuff like new thermalpads when they wear out or having them honor their warranty

The current gen consoles might be getting a bit "old" by now, but I think there's stuff with the cpu and storage that devs still haven't been able to fully exploit yet.
