In the second half of the 2023-24 season, something was just off about Elias Pettersson's game. Could it be that his running mate Andrei Kuzmenko was traded? Was it an injury? Had he mailed it in after signing his contract? Speculation ensued, and today, Elias Pettersson has finally put all the rumours to rest.

The Canucks' season is finished, what's done is done. What's most important is that Petey will recover fully by September.
@chungang7037

They can't announce injuries because if a player is able to still play they will be targeted by players on other teams to try and injure them further, isn't this the rationale?

If it was truly a bad injury why would Tocchet call him a passenger just a week ago. Tocchet’s response pretty much tells u what he thinks about Peter’s answer. At the time they resigned him why would they sign a huge contract if they thought he had some huge injury and his ability to play would be impacted. Peter just needs to bulk up and toughen up. Good news he now has time to do that and if he does the Canucks will be fine.

Die hard Canucks fan, I wear my Petey jersey when watching games...but, Petey... my guy... I call total BS on the knee "injury", he skated fine and he was throwing weight around trying to hit all the way to the end of the season. I wouldn't completely give up on Lindholm. He's got chemistry with the team and with the $6 mil Myers cap hit expired and him likely to either retire or resign for significantly less then that, and with Makeyev a strong contender for either a buyout or trade to dump his cap hit, and Hronek so far being a greedy dusche, and likely to go as an RFA to somewhere else with compensation, there's a lot of cap space to clear up, even with guys like Zedorov needing to be resigned. I think what Lindolm brings to the Petterson line is exactly what EP40 needs. A strong forward who can mix it up on the boards and in front of the net, who can create loose pucks for him, and has the talent to make plays and snipe shots himself, but his big presence is most felt in getting the puck off the boards and being a big screen in front of the net, and forcing the D to collapse in, while blueliners like Hughes are enough of a threat to keep the wingers up high, creating some space in the middle for Pettey to one time or dangle in front and shoot.

@@aidenemacdonald maybe would be possible if they give him a player capable of partnering with him in the cycle, rather then Makeyev, where cycles die on the boards and missed shots @OP - Shooting is a full body action. Unless you want to shoot inaccurate muffins Makeyev style, you use your full body, not just arms to shoot properly. Also, Pettersson's skating is 2nd to none, when he's healthy. In case you're not aware, the knee is located in the middle of the leg, the joint the leg hinges upon in fact, and the legs are what people stand on, when any part of a leg is injured, that person will be slow, clumsy and off balance by default. I know this because I've had a major, career ending knee injury. I wasn't an athlete, but did work labour until my knee blew out, so I know from personal experience how devastating a knee injury is. Yeah, the Central bracket had a lot less grit and defense than Pacific. The Stars still have a shot (and I'm rooting for Tanev) but they will have to lean on very different strengths than the Canucks were doing. Not sure I see a sensible alternative to the narrative around Pettersson besides injury. We're all overexposed to the idea that he stopped trying because people were scrambling to explain the change with the information they had, jumping to a lot of unsupported conclusions about his work ethic etc.. LBI makes much more sense. In hindsight, his gait sucked, his acceleration sucked, his stance was too wide, he was hunched over after every hard shift, he was having problems leaning into his shot, he was giving evasive answers in interviews. The shoe fits.

@Seriously_Unserious
@Seriously_Unserious 3 месяца назад
I would argue, passing to the centre, where Makeyev SHOULD have been, but wasn't, because the guy has no nose for scoring and should have been on the 3rd or 4th line, not out with Pettey, tanking #40's performance worse then his bum knee already was. Literally every player from December onward who spent significant time on a line with Makeyev saw their offense tank while on his line, it was good before going on a line with Makeyev, and it was good after Makeyev. When ever single player paired with a Makeyev sees their offense tank, you have to look at Makeyev as the source of that tanking, rather then the players themselves just needing to Git Gud. And Patrick Alvain already appologized for the Makeyev situation, admitting it was his failing to get better wingers for the top lines and forcing Tocchett to play that guy there instead of a checking role where Ilya could have excelled.

Or why Alvain (you know the guy who's building the Canucks alongside Rutehrford and who's built multiple stanley cup chamption teams and dynasites) HIMSELF said Makeyev was not right for that line?
