Fillmore didnt do that to me. However, to anyone reading this, SUGAR. as soon as you feel the nic sick, get sugar into your system asap. Spoonfuls of sugar, honey or drink a coke fast. If you wait too long, you might puke.

I find that my nicotine tolerance is rather inconsistent (regardless of a full stomach or having sugar nearby, I always smoke with both of those boxes checked.) Sometimes I will smoke a whole cigar without feeling anything, other times I have a small bowl of mild virginia and my head starts swimming. Same with caffeine, sometimes I will drink coffee throughout the day, and other times one cup makes me feel sick and anxious for hours. I've learned the best strategy is just to pay attention to your body, normally you can catch these things before they get too out of hand. Cheers!

Not with the GL but a similar experience with War Horse. Lit it up, everything was fine. Loved the room note and taste but, like you, something was creepy up on me and pretty soon I had all the symptoms that you experienced, including that run to the bathroom. I remembered a piece of advice about having a piece of chocolate that would help settle things down, and it worked. The WH has been cellared for a year now and if I ever get brave again I might give it another go, but not in the near future.

I never had anything comparable. I actually love the hard nic hits. This is why I quit regular smoking cigarettes very quickly. No sense in it. You don't get the hit, if your body expects it. ;) So I have to try this one. ;)

I have a tin of Fillmore, yet to be opened, and now I'm wondering if keeping it sealed is the better choice. Regarding your severe reaction, I absolutely feel your pain: 1792 Flake proved to be well beyond what my system could tolerate and I experienced the symptoms identical to yours, including..............."that" one. I not only couldn't enjoy 1792 Flake again, I had to put the pipe down entirely for a couple of days: "A burned child fears the fire."

I've been following your channel almost from the beginning, and consider you an almost brother of sorts, so it pains me to admit how amused I was by your retelling of this experience! Reminded me of the poor guy from Arkansas trying to get through a review of Gawith's Brown No. 5! Like when a buddy takes one to the cookies in gymn class. 😂 We are so muchvalike in hating that feeling of losing control. Worst tobacco experience like that for me was a strong Padron cigar on an empty stomach. But I managed (carefully) Brown No. 5 just fine. So sorry for your pain, but thanks so much for sharing!😉

I smoked some Fillmore about the time you were doing your "replacement for Elizabethan" quest, and enjoyed it. Never had that kind of reaction to it, never seemed any stronger than Elizabethan. I have on occasion had a blend I was familiar with hit me hard (HH Bold Kentucky, for example), but never anywhere near that hard! I guess it's good to pay attention to how a newly opened tin of anything effects you in the first few puffs - even those things that you're very familiar with. 🙂

I don't think I've ever experienced anything quite like this...though I must admit I've been made light headed and a touch woozy by products containing nicotine from time to time. Some have speculated on that particular tin being particularly N-strong for whatever reasons but I wonder if that's actually the case. What I suspect instead is that one's own physiology can vary so much from week to week, and day to day, that anyone could, in theory, experience this given the right constellation of conditions on any given day.

A Nic rush is always awful. Happens to me on occasions and I have trouble identifying what it might be in my blend. I blend my own and therefore I cannot reasonably tell what T might be causing it. Does not happen when mixing my ingredients in another form, to out the culprit. Could be me though. 😅

Summer, 1985. I was 18 years-old and enjoying my first cigar, and it was a good one -- a Hoya de Monterey. Smoked it on an empty stomach, and spent a long time on a cool bathroom floor. But, I enjoyed the taste so much that I couldn't wait to try it again on a full stomach, and that went great. The only pipe tobacco that gave me a hint of this was one I tried because of YOUR positive review -- G.L. Pease Triple Play. I tried it several times but never made it through a bowl. It tasted like stomach contents, and I caught the beginnings of the symptoms you describe and stopped in time. That tin resides forever in a landfill in central Nebraska.

Ugh man, I'm so sorry you got such a horrible case of nicotine sickness! I've never gotten quite that sick from a blend before, but I did once get a tin of G&H Ennerdale Flake that absolutely knocked me on my butt after 20 minutes of puffing away and made me feel a little green around the gills with the sensation that the room was spinning. It didn't make me toss my cookies, but I came awful close a few times and had to spend the next couple hours laying back in bed and sipping water until I recovered. Ennerdale is one of my absolute favorite blends and doesn't typically hit me that hard, but I think even highly experienced blenders can still slip up and let an extra potent batch sneak through quality control now and then.

I’ve not heard Fillmore mentioned in lists of strongest tobaccos, so I’m intrigued. I’m pretty convinced nothing is going to top HH Rustica, though, although Coniston Cut Plug is a close second. I do love them, but was a little let down by the potency of Dark Bird’s Eye, Happy Brown Bogie sliced (Brown Twist), and Kendal Dark. I do have some Dark Flake unscented on the way, so we’ll see about that one! Thanks, Bradley!

I’ve only had that happen maybe once or twice that I recall. A few months ago I got the dizzy sweats from Marlin Flake that I’ve had jarred since 2012. It had never done that to me before and it had been a pretty normal day. I tried it again about a week later paying close attention to my pace & condition. All was fine. All I can think is maybe I accidentally inhaled some the day I got sick. I was at my work bench when I got sick. Pipe clenched kind of breath smoking or lightly sipping nearly every breath. I’ve smoked MF several times since this incident without any trouble but I do find myself being more cautious.

I'm the same way. Years ago a friend of mine talked me into smoking a joint with him, and I think it must have been laced with something because I lost total control of my legs or my ability to focus. In about 25 years of off-and-on pipe smoking, that’s only happened me that bad once. Cold sweats, ghost-white face, extreme dizziness, everything you described. I had to immediately lie down(could only make it to the couch) and I actually passed out from it for about 4 hours. Felt fine when I woke up, but was soaked in sweat and felt like I lost an entire day. It was GH dark flake (unscented). That’s actually considered a medium strength blend, but it contains Dark Fired. DF blends work me over pretty hard, but this was insane. Almost like it was laced with something.

I had this reaction recently to a tin of Capstan Blue. I think it’s important to remember that while C&D blend this stuff to maintain consistency of flavor, mouthfeel etc, tobacco is an organic product and there will be variations due to region/climate/processing. If I might make a suggestion, give your body a little time to recover and try a completely different tin and see how you feel. Love the channel!

Really shakey, heart pounding, tight throat, pale white. I ate a couple lindt chocolates and after a few minutes it calmed down. But man i know the feeling and its not a good one at all. It's probably not due to the blend, but the tobacco inside that tin. Something must have happened in the production process, because having such a strong reaction to nicotine in general isn't usual. I've had similar experiences, but that was after doing two huge bong hits in a row containing Pueblo tobacco (and something else, but that's beside the point) first thing in the morning, and it lasted only about 5-10 minutes. I've been enjoying pipes and cigars regularly for about 9 years now. And I'm not a lightweight when it comes to nicotine, having dabbled in dip and cigarettes (Camel nonfiltered and nonfiltered Lucky Strikes). And I have found, in the rare occasions I get a nicotine buzz/sickness, have all been very random. And they seemingly happen out of nowhere, despite having a full belly, feeling healthy, etc. I think it's just whatever strange stars align in your body, and is something pretty out of ones control. But when this does happen, try eating a tablespoon of sugar. It helps to metabolize the nicotine and counters its effects. And drinking cold water slowly helps with the nausea.

My first cigar was like that. Imagine trying to walk an hour home from a party during winter in this condition. I think(!) I notice sometimes that the nicotine levels change between tins - one tin seems to be fine and the next gives me the first few signs of nicotine sickness within ten minutes (nightcap, I think? Both peterson). I always smoke at the same time in the evening and always after dinner. The last few times I've had problems with nicotine, I got myself a spoon of sugar and felt better within a few minutes or so. A quick google suggests that that may not be the best idea in general and it could be placebo.

I imagine that if a blend is made in large batches, or contain lots of different types of tobacco, and the batch is mixed well, that would even out inconsistencies of nicotine level. If Fillmore was made in small batches, or not mixed adequately, then a single Armageddon-grade leaf might end up spiking a small number of tins?

I smoke a lot of Greg’s blends and have never had this happen. It’s been a while since I smoked Fillmore, but I do know what you are talking about. Over the years I typically gravitate to the Latakia blends, especially at nighttime. One night not too long ago, I got about halfway through a bowl of Nightcap and I thought I too was about to die. Nicotine overdose is the absolute worst, and sometimes it just happens. Even to those of us that have been smoking for a long time.

Hi, it could be that they have a new batch of tobacco leaves to mix the blend. It could be that some of these leaves have not been prepared well and have a strong amount of nicotine left in them, or contain a substance that reacts badly with your body. This happens, maybe try letting the blend sit for a while and maybe after a month come back to it and see. I have a very similar experience with Cabbies mixture. One tin was perfect, the second one stung my tongue in a way that made me nauseous. Like I said, it could be immature leaves or poorly prepared leaves.

I also recommend eating something sweet to raise your blood glucose level, which is lowered by nicotine. Wish you good health.

Damn, son! That was a shocker. I think some of the other listeners are on a promising track, with comments about tobacco crops differing from year to year. But the question is: WHICH tobacco are we talking about? If it is a blend of Virginias, which leaf? And the Perique is a whole other matter. Russ Ouelette told me that the leaf used in Perique, a strain of Burley, is not extraordinarily high in N, but the fermentation it undergoes potentiates its own N and the N content of any T that is blended with it. And Russ ought to know. I've never had a reaction to a T anything like what you described, and I'm glad of it! But like you, drugs never held any attraction for me. An ample Martini is mind-altering enough for me. And I think I'll get altered now. Great show today!

This gaslight tin is the only tin that has gotten me as badly as you describe here. I did find that when I rubbed out and thoroughly mixed the tin the nicotine hit was subdued a little. The damage was done though and now I have a mild aversion to gaslight. I try to avoid plugs (and sometimes even crumble cakes) in general now because of this issue. I used to work at a tobacconist with a smoking room and some of our customers had reactions like yours to stronger cigars if they were inexperienced. We offered them something sweet to drink or a chocolate bar which usually helped pretty well. My personal nicotine tolerance is very unpredictable. I've had reactions to fairly mild pipe tobaccos or cigarillos, yet I can smoke Nightcap in the morning and almost feel nothing. Haven't figured out the variables yet and I'm a pipe smoker for over 20 years now (and was a cigarette smoker as well until 2020). It's odd.

I had this experience with night cap about 5 months ago... I wonder if it's the tin or the blend itself i smoked cigarettes for a long time quit moved to cigars then recently just picked up pipe smoking. Recommend any english blends ? Lower nicotine

@@BoringDroneProduction If you can lay your hands on it, I'd recommend Squadron Leader by Samuel Gawith. Very smooth and balanced and below medium nicotine level. Here in Germany SG tobaccos are hard to come by at the moment. Former Dunhill, now Peterson My Mixture 965 and Standard Mixture are also excellent Latakia Blends with mild to medium nicotine levels. If you're into Oriental forward blends or want to try one: I'm a fan of Rattray's Red Rapparee. Oh, and Vintage Latakia from the HH series by MacBaren is also top notch! It even has a very tolerable to pleasant room note imo. To avoid confusion: this one has no Orientals in it, just Latakia and Virginia and a little Burley apparently (which I don't really can taste tbh but I have an old tin). Hope that helps a little. :-)

I've smoked Fillmore off and on since it was first released by GLP and I've never experienced what happened to you. I don't really seek out high nic blends like Ten Russians and I agree with your original review/assessment that Fillmore is pretty much a medium strength blend. Every now and then, though, I will experience a noticeably stronger smoke than usual from a blend--pretty much a variance that you'd expect from an organic product like tobacco--but, again, not to the extent that you experienced. I'd wager another tin of the exact same blend would smoke normally.

Man, nicotine sick is just the worst. I've had it one or two times smoking cigars. I've read that eating something with lots of sugar, like a piece of chocolate, helps alleviate it once it starts kicking in. I've smoked back to back bowls of Brown No. 4 and didn't have anything more than a noticeable head rush, though I've always had a high nicotine tolerance. When I tried introducing my cig puffing friend to pipes, I gave him some Irish Flake to try out. I guess he was inadvertently inhaling because he couldn't finish the bowl due to getting sick, lol. I tell people that getting nicotine from pipe smoking isn't anything like cigarettes. If you are getting a cigarette-like nicotine rush from a pipe, chances are you're about to experience Bradley's bad night if you don't stop.

i have seen multiple content creators have issues with a blend or two. I have not had fillmore, but i have had Haunted bookshop and even your Elizabethan. none have given me a nicotine high, but when i vaped, i would get air headed in the morning when i woke and if i hit it to much it would get me a little uneasy on my feet, even had to wait 15 minutes to ride my motorcycle it would effect me that much. then at night i would get so dizzy i would get sick. that is the fight or flight mode in your body wanting to eliminate anything in the stomach of non essential energy to be used. I just dont think one bowl of tobacco would cause that. but a batch with a chemical that you might have an allergy too, might. just my 2 pennies.

Reminds me of an evening in college in the ‘90s, when my friends & I drove up to Niagara Falls, Canada, to get Cuban cigars. We all got Cubans & promptly got kicked out of a bar from all the cigar smoke we were producing. We didn’t want to waste those fine cigars, so we drove around smoking in the car. It was January & freezing out, so we had the windows mostly rolled up. All four of us got sicker than dogs & we had to pull over to barf several times on the way back to PA!

If it would happen again, try this: - have a flow of fresh air in the room - lie down on the floor, on your back - keep your feet elevated, e.g. on the seat of a chair or on the edge of a bathtub - try to relax and breathe regular this should make the discomfort vanish quickly, which is all you want in these unpleasant occurrences

Wow I wasn't expecting this. I had my first tin last month and I enjoyed it quite a bit, enough to order 5 more tins of it. During that time s'ing the Filmore among other blends I did notice the feeling of my throat constricting. It didnt bother me too much as I have had this feeling before and figured it was allergies or something. It did prompt me to do some googling and I recall searching nicotine overdose, or nicotine allergy. So it's possible I had a similar reaction to this can as you, except yours sounded alot more intense. Bad batch of perique maybe? I'm kinda worried now that i got 5 tins coming, i'll keep you posted

I think you got a spiked tin. Like something inadvertent in the blending process just supercharged the nic content. That's the only thing that makes sense. I'm a former cigarette smoker, like you, and I always thought we had a higher nicotine tolerance than non-cigarette smokers. But maybe not. I remember once firing up a Cuban Romeo y Julieta corona that was gifted to me by a friend who'd picked it up in Spain, and I fired it up as a "breakfast smoke" before food or anything, and it blew my head off, but not in a sick way, just with massive strength and flavor that I wasn't expecting. That cigar shouldn't have yielded such an experience, and a tobacconist whom I trust said that sometimes the rollers will spike a blend to their own liking just for fun, LOL! Now I'm really tempted to give Filmore a try!

I've not had Fillmore myself, but I have suffered nicotine overload. I've had this happen from the same tin of my regular blend which doesn't ever bother me. These instances were usually (and somewhat ironically) attributable to stress, exhaustion or prior to an illness such as the flu that I was unaware had already been incubating. While there is certainly some possible merit to other notions, such as inconsistency of organic compounds, my experiences can almost unequivocally be attributed to the aforementioned.

WRONG! Look at your pipe engineering. All forges that have an air pipe installed at the bottom of the fire pit get clogged up with ash and burning cinders. Blow pipes require you to blow into them. You don't suck on blow pipes. Fires 🔥 exhaust vertically. You don't sick the fire into your lungs. But, you foolishly did and still do today. I'm not surprised you ruined yourself.

Picked up a 2oz tin of this couple week. I have smoked quite a bit of it with no issues. I am pretty new to pipe smoking, but a long time cigarettes (16 years) and cigar smoker. I also vaped for a long time too. I have a pretty high tolerance to nicotine like you. I can smoke several bowls in a row of full english blends with little to now issues. So, sounds like you might have gotten an off batch. I know the feeling well, and its straight awful. Nicotine poisoning is one the worst feelings in the world.

I don't really know what my nicotine tolerance is. I've smoked cigars for years and recently got into smoking a pipe as well. I regularly smoke Elizabethan with coffee on an empty stomach and have heard a few people say they've gotten hit hard by it. I guess we're all different, but I wish there was a blend that would get me a buzz every now and again.

When I was 9, I tried Copenhagen chewing tobacco and accidentally swalloed it. That was maybe as bad as what you just described. Its hard to imagine pipe tobacco having such a pronounced effect on a seasoned smoker. Five Brothers puts a frog in my throat and gives me a light head if I smoke more than half a bowl- Try some of that as a control. 😅

LOL, I do not like that feeling. About six or seven years ago Autumn Evening did that to me. I was a cigarette smoker for 25 years before I quit about 12 years ago, and I smoked Lucky Strikes straights! I was driving a truck on the P.A. Turnpike a while back and I was smoking C&D Chocolate Cavendish in my Grabow Omega and BAM!! I was sweating the cab of the truck started spinning, was looking for a bag before I puked all over the dashboard! LMAO! I had to pull over man. It's weird because I put down a pound of Pegasus and crap loads of Gawith Hoggarth flakes with no problem, but those two blends I mentioned, they F me up!
