Too Hot to Handle? - TRYING PURE PERIQUE! | Pipe Varietals 

I tried pure Latakia 20 years ago and 20 years later, I still taste it in my mouth and I still smell it on my skin.

Interesting idea. I’ve heard that it’s recommended for a tobacco smoker who enjoys the complex taste of blends to taste the individual components so you can discern the various layers hitting your palette. I’ve done this with cavendish, burley and, of course, straight Virginia, but it never occurred to me to smoke straight perique or Latakia. Thanks for going where others fear to tread.

Straight perique is the bomb. Love it straight. Add a pinch of red Virginia or burley and it’s outstanding

That was hilarious and damn interesting. Perique has always had a bit of a mystique to me so enjoyed seeing this. Hey, at least it can only get easier moving forward through this series right?

Before quitting, I smoked American Spirit Blacks, which are made with a heavy dose of Perique. I can tell you after smoking those for several years, I found next to no one who would borrow a cigarette from me. Those few that did, took a couple puffs and couldn't finish it. My favorite thing to do was to look at their faces when they took that first puff. It looked very similar to yours. It is certainly an acquired taste and took me many months to switch to those American Spirit Blacks. I have to say, that they cut my consumption by 75% because of how heavy and pungent they were. That was the main reason to switch to them at the time. However, by the end, I got used to them and all other cigarettes just did nothing for me. They all tasted and smoked like an ultra-light compared to the Perique.

It's interesting that you compared it to wine, because the process is pretty much making a tobacco vinegar. I think a red Virginia Perique blend done correctly shares a lot of similarities with a nice, dry Bordeaux, or California Cabernet.

Looking forward to the pure cavendish review, that is a very easy smoke in it's pure form and yes, this is a very valuable excercise for any pipe smoker who wants to be able to identify the components in either their commercial blends or when they decide to blend their own mixes from these pure components.

Perique is the one blending component I wouldn't try all on its own, but I do enjoy it in my blends. I've made a few pressed crumble cake blends with some perique in the mix. It's fun 😊

I wouldn`t even know where to get some pure perique. Buying from the USA is a no go for me. But I would love to have some to put in some of my blends.

When I first picked up a pipe, I watched a bunch of videos, and I think it was Russ Oulette that recommended trying all the different component T's to get familiar with the taste of each so that you can know what you're tasting in a blend.

It's like you prob wouldn't want a mouthful of pure ketchup/mustard/vinegar etc. But a bit on your basic food makes it taste better.

You must have much more retronasal sensitivity than me. I smoked a few bowls of McClelland blending perique a few years ago. I didn’t mind it, didn’t find it overpowering either taste-wise or the nic-hit. Just very distinctive. After it was finished the (cooled, cleaned) pipe had a peculiar, quite strong aroma. I’m not very sensitive to ghosting, I don’t smoke aromatics or segregate my pipes, but I guess I got a bit of low-level ghosting the next few times I smoked that pipe.

Hi, B. Great video. I think the one thing missing is where can one get this. I mean to say, where can pure perique be bought nowaday, preferably in tin. Not residing in the US means that I'm not able to buy it bulk and, to make things harder, I was told that McConnell's "pure perique" (once upon a time, available here) is not actually St. James Parrish true perique.

About 20 yeaes ago, when I first picked up a pipe, Itried perique on it's own a couple times. I didn't find it bad at all, though it was rather one-dimensional. The smell was much more enticing. I opted to stop smoking it alone because I only had two ounces of the stuff and it was actual St. James Perique, rather than Acadian. I think I might still have it sealed in its jar somewhere.

Add this to a 1/2 bright verginia 1/2 red verginia, citrus casing, and kiss this blend with a touch of perique, then press this in wood barrel stave block press. Youre welcome.

I bought both sutliff TS20 and C& D long cut perique and their night and day different. They look different. The sutlip is shiny and oily. Like many of the set lift tobacco leaves. The C&D is drier looking. It is much stronger but one mixed with a Virginia produces a really nice fruit flavor. The sutliff was much more tamed and didn't add as much good flavor when I tried blending with it. I bought more C&D. I'll have to go back and try the sutliff again

I blended some of my homemade perique (now a year old) with some homegrown burley on the 4th and it was pretty bland, just a little mushroom flavor, not getting it done.

I’ve sampled nearly every type of tobacco straight because I’m a home blender. Perique is sort of boring alone, add a small hint of Virginia and it’s suddenly a vastly different experience. Perique by itself isn’t all that strong as far as nicotine imo, and the flavor is flat. It is my favorite tobacco by far and I use it in nearly all my blends and my cigs. Try it if you must, but it won’t blow your mind.

How about if I just drink some red wine instead?

I bought a can of pure perique . It was too wet and smelt like dead dog The paper wrappers were browned and there were white spots on the surface, Do you think it was rotten and not good to be used? Really need help😊

Lol! I guess it gets better after this one though a straight cavendish is too cloying for me and I cringe when I reminisce. It’s like a marshmallow in a bowl. I can do a strait Latakia but it’s better with its usual counterpart companions. The rest ought to be very enjoyable. Greatness!

I don't find the aroma to be fruity at all, I find it to be fishy & cheesy. After a pipe of pure perique I can smell fish & cheese all around me for days. I don't use St James though, I use Kendall, lakeland.

I've smoked a few bowls of perique, and let me tell you, I did not enjoy it really at all. Burn the nasals up on the retro, mushroom flavored barf smoke. Pure perique is definitely not for me.
