This Plane Got Stuck On FULL Power, What The Pilot Did Next Was Unbelievable!

On the 13th of April, 2010, Cathay Pacific Flight 780 set off from Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, Indonesia en route to the Hong Kong International Airport. The take off conditions were standard and they were expected to make a routine landing in just under 5 hours.
However, a few hours into the flight, it became apparent to the crew members that this was going to be no routine flight.

The two pilots have really tried for keeping the aircraft steady in the air and also averted air crash. They really deserved to be awarded. The senior pilot has shown his expertise in his profession. We thank God for saving air disaster.

My late father a 24000 hour pilot always maintained that "for 364 days 23 hours and 59 minutes, airline are overpaid but in that other minute they earn every dollar they receive." this crew took longer but I'm sure that no one on board will ever accept that the pilots are over paid. Training and experience count for everything in aviation.

It's the well trained keeping calm under serious pressure (weather, unknown technical situations, cannot be trained for until they happen. Thats when the trained pilots keep cool, do all the preparations to keep the pax save and then keep cool and work out their combined knowledge. Thumbs up for those two pilots who did not give up and made 300m j😢ust just enough not to race into the ocean! Cool heads! Wow!

Fuel contamination was my first thought given that both engines became compromised. Given that the crew was dealing with an unplanned crisis, they did superb. My only criticism was that ground control continued to advise they finish the flight passing up numerous safe destinations that may have allowed them to maintain more control over the plane instead of flying on for several additional hours with a compromised aircraft when other better options were available allowing the situation to deteriorate until they have a full blown emergency to deal with.

Pretty standard as most of these twinjets are designed to be able to fly “safely” on one engine. There are ETOPS FAA rules specifying single engine distance ratings since the 1980’s. The bottom line as usual is PROFIT.

GAAAHH! You gave away the ending in the first (very visible) comment! Just joking, I’ve seen this in a long episode with the same actors. They were heroes and I hope the profit centred management who allowed the flight to continue were suitably shamed. At an airport with a drop into the sea off the runway, it would be good to see that RAS (or whatever it’s called) arrestor system installed.

I thought there must have been other ways to slow down the plane, like air brakes (invented as long ago as the aviation started). The airplane always should have the alternative ways to any forseeble trouble. Airbrakes seem to be able to handle many issues like this one.

In this video there is told that they were used. Even with those the plane was too fast. About the issue to fly without engines at all...Look up for the "transatlantic glider" A yet should be able to glide 100 miles if he's flying at 39000 feet when the engines fail. Of coarse there is only ONE chance for landing....
