This week I'm distracted by a family tradition that takes up all our spare time. Our local festival "Harlan Days" is in town and it's time to take a break from the normal routine and go help out with family.
Aside from enjoying the instructional parts of your channel, your family and your community just represents the ideal of what America is supposed to be. With so much of the nation in a perpetual political war, it’s great to see an oasis of Americana on your channel. Thank You!
It's not just on this channel, it's all over rural America. Get out of the cities and especially get off the internet and you'll see it still exists out there. Social media is poison
@aboomer420 agreed my community is the same way we will all be getting ready for the county fair soon .everyone helps out everyone gets along ..... stay away from the big cities except when I absolutely have to for work and it's all good
Good eye! It was built from a tractor from my Dad's late cousin, Tom Koch. We have used it for this purpose of stinging wire for as long as I can remember. It only comes out once a year!
This blows my mind every year as I live and grew up in an area with minimal community spirit to say the least. It is amazing to me that many people can volunteer and come together to put on an event of that scale.
I live in a small town in the Northeast. Reminds me a lot of your area. Small farms, some mom and pop shops... The local diner where everyone knows each other. We used to do a town event called "Old Town Days". Started in the 70s... Everyone in town would get together the day before and set up all the stands and tents along Main Street (which was shut down for cars). Year ago, this area started to be a vacation destination for outsiders. Ya know, the small quaint town with all the lakes and ski resort. Soon this area got flooded with NY and New Jersey rich people with their second homes... Today, the festival is gone, most the shops have closed down, no one knows each other around here, and the festival hasn't been put on in years. How the times have changed.
😭😭😭 Reminds me of when I grew up in a small village in the countryside, every second or third house was a small dairy farm and in the centre a small grocery shop and some repair shops. 50 years later it's all gone, most of these small houses and farms are demolished and now big mansions have taken their place.
@@allaboutperspective650 It happens. We're seeing unused pastures and fields in my county being cleared for housing developments...but on the other hand, the land owners are selling the land to developers.
Dang... crying less than a minute in see you make core memories with your girls. They will remember these days for the rest of their lives. Your grandkids will hear about what you all did when they were young. Please more of these videos. They are WONDERFUL!
Thank You Neil and family. This area of Indiana and Your family's involvement is something special to me. My name, Robert Harlan. Dad was from Ft. Wayne. Mom from Indy. I have enjoyed your video's and you have brought back so many of my childhood memories. Engaging your daughters into the setup of the festival is priceless. Wish I could attend.
Neil, you will always see me on the next one. Seriously, this must be one of the most wholesome channels on RU-vid ever created! The beautiful, warm community you’re involved in and the effort you give back to it literally brings a tear to my eye! Thank you for your incredible storytelling, your hard work, and your willingness to share as much as you do. You and your family are the American dream!
Your content always puts a smile on my face. I especially enjoy the details when you do your repairs and builds. Thank you for giving us family friendly things to watch and enjoy. 😎 🚒 🚗 ⚾ 🌽 🎉😊
Neil, you are the MAN!... I dont't know how you do it and find the time to do all that you do with a family and kids too. This was a neat behind the scenes of your life without the house, but still using your skills and expertise for your community. Well done sir, that's why always recommend you channel to look at THANKS FOR SHARING1 !
I love your Harland days updates! I am always blown away by the organized and efficient effort. Especially with the temporary electrical set up!!! It reminds me of my local town fair growing up, as well as the ones near me know. I love living in a small rural town. Thanks as always!!!
Neil, I look forward to the videos every Sunday morning! Highlight of my week…side note I can vouch for the hall of fame status of those coney’s. Keep up the good work and god bless!
Hopefully you got the band together to hone your play list? At their age… It must be satisfying to your daughters to appreciate the time they give to the community. I know my daughters enjoyed ‘Work Day’ at the ball park even when they were younger. But, that early teen age is where they really started planning and getting excited to do it. It is something they talk about proudly… and seem to remember every moment spent. I hope Harlan Days came off perfectly. And, look forward to seeing a clip or two of ‘The Band!
You're exactly right in that my girls are of the age where they really want to help and pitch in. They are frustrated when there isn't some for them to do. And now, they are old enough to go look for things to do without my promoting them, which is a great source of pride for dear 'ole Dad. There were moments this year where I didn't see them for an hour at a time but heard from others what they had been helping with. We did have a good show this year. It rained all night on Friday when our band was on stage but we still played since we had the benefit of good cover and the prevailing wind to our backs of a 3 sided shed. The audience however was facing said wind. But, they persisted through and made us feel good. I'm still debating if I'll show any more Harlan Days from this year on here. I filmed a lot over the 3 days but it's all pretty random. But like you said, maybe I can drop a clip or two in there ;) Have a great week Dave!
Great to see everyone helping out to have fun weekend your two girls getting involved helping out don’t see much of that today NO iPhones in hand 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍
Great video...have to agree with the earlier commentor....it was way too short... much respect to you and the girls for all the hard work and community spirit!!
Was wondering when you would start prep for the show, now I know. You do this every year I know, for that alone you deserve a hats off moment, as well as all the work you do throughout the year. Hope you all enjoyed the show. Thanks from UK.
That’s a lot of work setting up the electrical. I’m an electrician and I love the way you ran romex between light poles for temp lighting. It’s not rated for it, but it works.
Last year we tore out the old Romex that had served there for 30+ years. Figured if we could get another 30 out of this string it was worth the effort and price!
Looks like a great event, and watching a community work together like that really helps us remember that while division and conflict sells clicks in the news, Americans of different minds come together every day to make positive things happen in our communities. This video is like Norman Rockwell 2024! Also, onions all day long. 😉👍
Good morning the Combination of Community setting this all up is amazing. Your connection with Family, Friends and the Community with the Warmth of Spirt and Positive Motivation, along with the Celebration of a Shared Smiles is a silent Wealth that Steers us along our Life’s Path, forever allowing us to navigate Life’s Puzzle Pieces. You are accomplishing this, incorporating strength and facilitating more endurance for success of Families than you will ever know. 😊👍🙏🏻👍🙏🏻👍🙏🏻
As always, Neil, I enjoy your content greatly. I’m in the UP on vacation and still took a few minutes to watch your Sunday release. I am so envious of your home, town and family. You are truly fortunate. On thing though. Dude, onions on a coney … required. Sorry.
I put it on my calendar after last year. My neighbor showed up from Chicago area and we did a lot of work on both properties. I am sure the fair was a lot more fun.
I think that small carnivals and community days are pretty much a staple in the midwest. I know we have them here where I live as well. I also know, for the first time in my LIFE how much effort goes into setting up for these events! WOW! As far as onions on hot dogs... whatever you enjoy, you should do! (and that INCLUDES ketchup (Just dont tell those folks over in Chicago... they get WAY bent out of shape over ketchup... which is sort of funny, when you think about what gets put INTO the hotdog.....)
Seeing your girls run the bases brings back a memory for me. Before Three Rivers Stadium was imploded, my parents had my brother and me go down and run the bases after a Pirate game during the final season for the old stadium. Their AAA farm team is the Indianapolis Indians.
You already know this, but you've got something so special with that community. And the most important part is the way the kids are growing up carrying the torch 🤠👍
That is neat. I'm surprised by some of things that you put up and take down each year, like the stadium lights. I suppose that the field is multi-purpose, and those things would be in the way during other times of the year.
The Harlan water tower looking like the animated Arlen Texas one suddenly prompted a what-if. What if Hank "King of the" Hill had two daughters instead of a son and a bloodhound? I guess he'd need to trade his bob-tail propane rig for a tri-axle dumper too. Just a silly thought.
@@digdrivediy If one of your pals turns out to be a Texas Ranger or a U.S. Marshall and drives an all-American muscle car It will be officially spooky.🤣
I understand why many communities install permanent fairground areas, but the sense of community pride that comes from coming together and setting it all up can’t be beat.
Yay! Harlan Day! So e people might gripe about these vids but in the cities and suburbs, things like this and community involve and pride are not a “thing” anymore. Lucky the kids get to enjoy this growing up.
Sorry Neal a legitimate all original signature Coney Dog has onions. You don't have to get carried away with a big pile, just ask light onion. If it has no onion, then it's just a hot dog. I know some do an onion sauce or chili even. The original from early 1900s has grilled or a Sautee onion with kraut and brown mustard. Me myself I prefer their chili sauce, onion, and yellow mustard, but each their own.
Every year I used to help my friend set up the electric at Morton in marsh agricultural show when he took over everything was hard wired anyway it was soon converted to plug in with 64 32 and 16 amp 240 volt much easier
