Hey Scotty, I am a retired Ford International Field Service engineer. (1969-2016) Which just means Ford has sent me all over the world to repair cars and trucks the no one in country could repair, or to find the root cause of issues plaguing a certain component or model. I love watching your videos and agree with all most all of your opinions. I like that you stress verifying the basics before checking the electronic systems. Almost all of the issues I have solved were done by checking the basics first. Most techs check for codes and start replacing parts starting with the first code and ending with the electronic module or modules and the issue is still present after breaking the bank and wasting a lot of saleable time.

Well said.lucky you can retire and get out .as a mechanic myself(still have few years yet). There's no more thought process it's gone.they grab a laptop or scanner. Look for hours into the screen. Waiting for an answer. The basic mechanical knowledge is not there. Actually sometimes my job is easy. All the parts changers have changed all the not failed parts.then I'm asked to finish it.i tell them where to look.or what the problem is. It goes in 1 ear out the other. I let the boss tell customers why we changed unnecessary parts.

Got an 04 Neon SXT 5-speed hand me down that was wrecked twice my my elder sibling. About to hit 250k miles on the original transmission, clutch assembly, and engine. Motor mounts wear out fast and have had to replaced multiple times to fix excessive vibration in the passenger compartment, but other than that has been an amazing car. I’ve taken the thing all over the country, up and down mountain highways, the whole gambit and it still runs well! Currently drive my Neon 80+ miles a day commuting at freeway speeds.

In the SRT-4 Neon engine, which the PT Cruiser Turbo models had, the spark plugs are a bit harder to get to. You actually have to have like an 8 inch extension for your ratchet just to reach down into the engine and unscrew them

Thank you so much for making this video! Sadly it is probably too late for many owners. My family’s 2001 PT cruiser had a constant overheating issue. Out of several mechanics, NONE could diagnose the cause. My sister was driving it as it overheated & caught fire on the highway, eventually totally englufed in flames! She barely got out with no injuries. I hope your video helps others to prevent this. I will never buy a Chrysler product after that!

I love the fender covers, very professional. The fault code points to a stuck thermostat, very common. Easiest way to diagnose would be to touch the rad hoses. They should be close in temperature, indicating flow.

I had a PT Cruiser rental about 11 years ago when my Toyota was in the body shop. To be fair it was a decent car. Roomy and decent driving. My only complaint was the automatic transmission only allowed manual shifting in gears 1, 3 and 4. When going up grades I wanted to downshift to 2nd. 1st was to low and 3rd was too tall. It wouldn't stay in 2nd. The 3 weeks I drove it was a decent experience.
@thetechlibrarian
@thetechlibrarian 5 лет назад
Probably because it was a new car, most all cars are nice when they are new, the real question is what's it's like 10 years later with 120k, is it just about junk or is it ready for another 100k
@wolfman9999999
@wolfman9999999 5 лет назад
@@thetechlibrarian I bought one cheap for $500 with over 140k on it. It was suffering from the neglect that the last couple of owners had given it. A bit of TLC made it a car solid for a cross country trip, in which it did happily. No squeaks, no rattles, no complaints. As has been mentioned elsewhere in the comments, just take care of them and they'll last. The only true issue with working on these is the fact that the engine bays are tight due to the "retro" styling. It makes some work harder than it needs to be as you have to remove parts to make space to work. One of those things is the timing belt, as it requires removing a section of the frame to gain full access. Since it's a "deep" repair, there's a list of seals and the water pump are included in the swap list making it expensive. You have to learn to fix these yourself as nobody wants to touch these anymore due to the labor cost. My first timing belt job was an entire weekend with three of us taking a very systematic and careful approach to ensure that we got everything together correctly, and not have to repeat the process. I could probably tackle it solo now in about a day.

I've had my 2001 PT Cruiser ever since I ordered it from the dealer "OUT OF A BOOK" because they weren't in the dealership yet and only after 20 years an I having to do any major maintenance on it. I have decided to replace everything since almost everything is original even though some things are still in decent shape such as the half shafts, motor mounts, belts and hoses. I am also changing the spark plugs and coil even though they were changed 10 years ago and the car is running fine. My care has NEVER had a problem except for s single crack in the dash and a cracked windshield caused by a rock off of a dump truck.

Mom has a 08 she was given brand new. It's been a great car for her and no major problems yet. I have a 95 Neon my lil sister bought brand new after I told her what options to get. It has 185k on it now on the original engine. I got it in 05 and I have replaced the timing belt and water pump at 155k, the rear main at 165k, and the front brakes a few years ago. It is easier to work on than the pt due to more room but they drive pretty similar through the pt is a bit smoother running because of the balance shafts and smaller cam profile. 95 neons had a hotter cam then the newer models just like 68 340 4 speed engines bad a hotter cam then the auto cars so slightly more power. Moms we had to replace the fan set up due to the controler going bad and it dying when she turned on the air and the second fan didn't so the compressor froze up and killed it. Bought a aftermarket fan on Amazon and it works great again for 90 bucks. People going to hate and many have no real world experience with the things they hate. They did have the head gasket recall on the 95's because Daimler wanted to use a cheaper gasket and that gave them a bad reputation but it was the crappy gasket they used. I haven't had to replace it since sister did at 70k, the better gasket truly was a quality part and they had no more issues with them after that.

I had some issues with a customers PT Cruiser years ago. The original problem was changing the timing belt. We did that, and about a week later it came back with overheating, and oil pressure problems. So we pulled out the motor and took it down, the head gasket wasn’t blown, so we went ahead and rebuilt the motor for the customer. Long story short, when I quit working as a mechanic, my dad swapped the motor for him because the Piston Holes were all ragged out and shot. I hate hate HATE PT Losers...... Love your videos bud!

In your comments Scotty, you stated why not to buy a Chrysler , serious problems. Really Scotty? A tstat is a serious problem? The radiator was replaced due to a front end collision? Is that the fault of Chrysler engineering or bc of the accident? It just goes to show how biased you are towards Chrysler. This vehicle is 10 years old and small issues like this are not considered serious. If you tell your viewers that the engine head gaskets are bad or something wrong internally with the engine, drivetrain or other major components, then i can agree with your decree, that a certain make has serious problems but to make mountain out of something small, really reeks of your inward bias towards Chrysler. As i said before and i will say it again, Chrysler has made many extremely durable and reliable vehicles and they far outlasted anything thst GM or FORD made back when you started as a spring chicken mechanic 51 yrs ago

Very basic n solid technique for a temperature run high diagnostic. In addition, u can also check the coolant tank at the top and the oil cap to see if there’s any oil on it. If it’s with grey colour cream like oil, it got a chance of blown head gasket.

I was sitting at a stop light a couple of months ago and I looked down and saw that the coolant temperature gauge was between the middle and red mark. I turned the heater on, and pulled into the O'Reilly parking lot after the traffic light turned green since I was right there. I got out and felt the upper radiator hose to see how hot the engine was. To my surprise, it was stone cold as if I hadn't been driving at all. I got back in my car and kept driving. Everything was normal. The next day, I let my car idle while waiting for my food at Sonic. I noticed the needle inching toward the red again. I turned the heater on again and drove back to work. After I got back, I felt the hose and it was cold even though the engine was hot. I replaced the thermostat and the car has been fine ever since. I replaced my thermostat as preventative maintenance when I did the timing belt 35,000 miles ago with one from the dealership. The reason why I got the current thermostat from O'Reilly's was because the dealership thermostat said Motorad on it. I figured there's only 1 or 2 companies making thermostats for my car and that all they're doing is putting the same part in a Mopar box. I have a 2008 non turbo PT Cruiser. I've owned the car for 7 years and it's been extremely reliable. I've put 100,000 miles on it and have never had a check engine light. The factory service manual says to install the thermostat in the housing prior to bolting it on the engine. The problem was that the new thermostat wouldn't stay on the bottom of the housing so I used dental floss to hold the thermostat to the housing while I bolted it on. After everything was torqued down, I pulled the floss out of the filler neck and the bleed valve was aligned with the notch perfectly.

My parents got a 2001 PT cruiser from my aunt who passed away. It had 38k miles on it, and they gave it to me for free as my first car. Obviously, it was freewheels, so I was grateful and drove it. After about 5 months of owning it, I sprung a coolant leak from radiator hoses, I replaced the hoses, and not even a month later, the car started overheating badly. I had the radiator replaced around 45k miles. I drove good through the winter, but once spring came, it again began losing coolant and overheating. I had the radiator replaced again. The next summer same story. I had the radiator replaced again. It happened again, and the engine blew while I was driving. I took it to a scrap yard and got around $250 for it. I will never own a Chrysler again. Even the 300's were having the same issue. Pacifica was overheating as well. Cheaply made cars, obviously cash grabbers. Save yourself the time and money and buy literally anything else. I found a cheap 1999 Ford Taurus and drove it for 3 years, put nearly a 100,000 miles on it, no major issues, just regular maintenance. I recently hopped into a 2008 Ford Taurus and it's a fantastic car.

Don't know why everyone dumps on PT's. My '03 has 208k miles and runs fine. Yes, I did need to rebuild the tranny at 165k, but other than change the timing belt (and water pump-you do both) at the 100k intervals (twice) I've done no other major work. Body is still tight and interior has held up really well. It's a daily driver that simply always works. OK, I am the original owner and yes, I do change the oil every 5k and have regular maintenance done. I do work on it myself for the small stuff and find it easy to get to things. Like any car, if you take reasonable care of it, it will last.

I have a PT cruiser and I had to change the thermostat last week, not because of overheating, but because it would make a crazy bubbling sound after a varying amount of use. The thermostat was very tough to operate and was causing major steam buildup prior to opening and it would open just barely so my reserve tank kept blowing its reserve out due to the excess amount of pressurized steam it got. Found out for sure when I left the cap off, topped off the system with water, and ran it on idle until the thermostat opened, and a bellowing of steam and bubbles came shooting out. Swapped the thermostat and now it is working without issue.
