This Rhythm Game Movie is Just Not Good | Deemo: Memorial Keys Review

I have seen neither the original Deemo story nor the movie one, but before that even people explaining Deemo's lore make me feel shocked at best. It was THAT kind of a story. To be honest the original one could be too open-ended, due to the lack of ANY narrators, maybe that's why the movie one was crap. But once you understand it, the original story is and will still be the masterpiece.

I remember crying a few times while I played deemo (yes, unlocking marigold was a fun experience) so I was really happy when they announced that they were going to make a movie but then after I watched it I walked out with a weird sense of dissapointment, and this video really explained why I thought the movie was kinda meh in comparison good video

The original story may be simple but it is still effective and charming so I can definitely see why someone would become attached to it, especially as a kid. I like it, too. At least the movie was animated and not some live action crap.

I have to be on your side on this one: Those three characters in the dream world should be erased, Mirai (the plushie cat) it's not meant to even talk to her like that, the point of it (or at least what I think it kinda goes for in the game) is to subtly guide Alice around the dream world and keep her company, pretty much what every toy is for little kids

I think it would have been fascinating to make the movie completely without dialogue until the end scene. Communication through motion, song and expression.

I was so excited when the movie was announced, but the controversies surrounding Rayark killed my appetite for it. I guess I dodged a bullet, but that doesn't make me feel any better. I love Deemo 1's story so much. It's such a nice, simple and sweet story accompanied with top tier soundtrack and gorgeous art direction that made the game feels like a story book. Fluquor still makes my eyes watery. No other rhythm game, or any game really, had made me fall in love this way. So it really sucks to hear that the movie didn't do it justice. Anyway, welcome back! The "ddr movie" you mentioned is an extremely bad spanish comedy movie that uses a DDR tournament as a plot/setting. Knowing bad spanish humor, and a couple of the actors there, I don't think it's something that deserves the effort of being watched by anyone lmao

Imagine if your a fan of Production I.G and ended up watching this beacause of this. When I think of Production I.G.....Im thinking fantactic action scenes, great animation......or more likeky both. I have no idea why the agreed to take the project on. Nevertheless I still love deemo and still play on the Switch version to thus day (not the reborn version.....though I did have fun in the VR version......but it was just lacking in songs) Everytime I hear Tokaku announcing the buyee ad just makes me smile. Thank you for the movie review. I think this is the most attention the movie has ever gotten, a movie I feel would've been better as a shorter OVA like Totsukuni no Shoujo (2022). That being said, I'm upset that no one ever talks about the Forgotten Hourglass DLC when people talk about DEEMO's story (except the one extremely brief RU-vid comment mention). Contrary to popular belief, the Forgotten Hourglass is the actual conclusion to the story. Spoilers for the entire story below. What most people miss about the ending to what is basically the 2nd chapter of 3 is that the Masked Lady (Celia) is another Alice for a reason. She is the part of Alice that did not want to wake up and wanted to stay with the last figment of her brother she had left (makes extra sense with the PS Vita's "After Story"). This means that a part of Alice did not want to confront the reality that her brother is dead (which makes extra sense when you read the light novel I know it's stupid segmentation). Even knowing it's a dream, Celia wanted to not wake up. The implication? Alice dies in a coma. That is the actual significance of the reveal being a dream in a hospital bed (as unrealistic as that is shut up). The Forgotten Hourglass continues after Alice waking up in the hospital to answer an important question: How is she doing now? Because obviously, Celia did not get any resolution whatsoever, which means the part of Alice that continues to grieve is now just left in the darkness trying to be suppressed. This means Alice will not get over her grief, which occurs over her lifetime until adulthood, until she reconciles with that part of herself. That is what the Forgotten Hourglass is about and what DEEMO truly is about: taking care of yourself and listening to parts of yourself that feel hurt or not listened to. Only then could Alice, over multiple playthroughs (symbolic), slowly but surely be empowered by memories of her brother, rather than held back by them. Of course, the anime movie completely ignores that like everyone else ignores the Forgotten Hourglass because Rayark is the worst developer known to mankind (markets the Hourglass as "an alternative retelling" except in the app update section as a "conclusion", releasing it after people thought the story was done in 2.0, PAYWALLING THE ENDING, and designing the game to make the story as obtuse as possible). I was hoping the anime solved this problem by adapting all the DEEMO stories that were segregated across different mediums and languages, but then it decides to betray the game's own message by summing up Alice's experiences as, "oh, I completely forgot about that. Well I have friends, now, so it's all G lmao xd". Thanks again for the video.

Movie was rushed in some parts and others were dragged on for too long. They actually had enough material to make a 90 minute movie without the out of coma scenes. In the game there are a bunch of rooms that unlock which they could have taken their time to explore for 60 minutes and make the last 20 minutes about her going to school, making friends, graduating from college, and then playing "Deemo goodbye" in a recital. Also, I wouldn't have minded the Toys if they didn't talk, there was no dialogue in the game. Light voice acting on the movie should have been the move.

3:38: The DLC isn't much but it's about Alice reliving her experience in Deemo sometime after she was discharged from the hospital because she couldn't get over with her brother's death (but it's basically enacting the same thing, just that the world become more brighter now). At the fourth time you cleared the story, Alice eventually got over with her brother's death and moves on (and you get Marigold for it)

Honestly if people want to learn a bit more about the Deemo 1 lore, I would recommend checking out the Deemo mangas (yes, there are 2 manga series about Deemo) rather than the movie. There's Deemo - Prelude (which is a short prequel to Deemo 1, hence Deemo's early background) and it's actually pretty good in my opinion. There's also Deemo - Sakura Notes (which is currently in a slow production I think) that pretty much takes stuff from the Deemo Movie into manga form, except probably handled better. Still not enough chapters for me to tell, but I at least prefer Sakura Notes manga over the movie for now.

I still play the first Deemo every once in a while ☠️ It does have some bangers

the biggest crime of the movie is the fact that the farewell part did not have goodbye playing. like, that song is a big part of why that scene is really emotional, why did they replace it with a somewhat happy sounding song??? imo they should've made the movie as a mostly wholesome fantasy story. just put the hints the game gave you somewhere, give the ocs + mirai actual funny hijinks than just "WOAH COOL SONG!" for the fillers, and remove the alive scenes, i think the movie would be at least decent

Im the pwrson always like to skip story scene of all rhythm game, but i did watch deemo story scene in game to understand whats the story was. Too bad i went horribly weird when it comes to a movie.

See the only reason I knew what Deemo was is because back in the day I played a Gacha game known as Brave Frontier and one of their crossovers was with Deemo, where one of the characters was a boss fight and the music they chose was *immaculate*. So this is a shock to hear that there was a full on movie.

Omg, I didn't know Alice and Hans both are related. This actually blows my mind. I never tried deemo 1 just yet, but perhaps after hearing the little story, I might be interested. I only know them in Cytus 2.

Deemo is my favorite rhythm game ever, its the best narrative rhythm game i know and is also of the game which helped me construct who i am now, it's quite sad its movie was this bad

What really tips me off is that they probably used most of their Cytus 2 money on mostly deemo related products... seriously, deemo reborn, deemo 2, deemo movie, more reborn ports, deemo 1 update. And now their money maker Cytus 2 is still under fire with controversy while continuing to make bad business decisions really bothers me

I know about The deemo movie but I did not expect to be that bad but lets don’t forget that Deemo had a light novel(only In Japanese and Chinese) While the book has a lot of pretty illustrations and sibling bond moments of Alice and Hans The story also explains Alice and Hans are orphans because their father passed away due to illness and the mom decided to follow the father, leaving the housekeeper in the house to take care of 2 kids💀 I really dislike that part There’s also a deemo manga talking about Hans decided to get a part time job due to being broke but I didn’t finish reading the whole thing I guess Rayark tries to milk the Deemo universe but it did not end well Regrding Rayark, Rayark has been going downhill as a lot of the talented people who used to be in Rayark left Rayark games had a lot of problems too like you cant transfer your files if you’re changing from apple to android(android to apple too), Voez’s story didnt even have a proper ending, cytus 2 Ai art problems and there’s probably more Implosion was supposed to have a movie as well but it has no more news since they finished the kick starter since 2015ish As an Ex Rayark fan, Im really disappointed with Rayark But I’m still happy that I got introduced into Cytus and Deemo, getting into rhythm games, playing deemo everyday to get good, talking with fans about the games, watching rayarkcon on youtube I mean Rayark still gave me a lot of memories, but this is something that you couldn’t go back since Rayark has become the company you’re not familiar with anymore I recall reading this comment on Facebook “If you are a person who cares about Rayark, you hate Rayark”

I completely agree! I purchased the movie on Blu-ray and decided to return it because I really didn't like it. I made a review a long time ago, so here it is for anyone interested: This is going to be an extremely nerdy tangent, so here's the short version of my review: It doesn't hold up to the original story, the animation is lacking (and in some parts blatantly lazy), and the overall plot has been oversaturated causing confusion as to what the backstory is. Now for my longer nerdy tangent (⚠SPOILERS AHEAD⚠) : As a faithful player and lover of Deemo (Played the mobile version on Android, Switch, and Vita, as well as the Reborn version on PS4 and PC) I am beyond disappointed in this story for these reasons: Masked Lady, the main antagonist of the whole plot is supposed to be cold hearted until the very end. In the PS Vita afterstory, we learn that Alice (after having left the castle) is able to return as the masked lady in an attempt to stop the past Alice from leaving. This is so powerful, she's so struck with grief that she'd prefer to trap herself in purgatory just to be with her brother. What does she do in the movie thought? After giving Deemo a cursed music sheet which destroys the tree, she turns a fucking leaf and helps Alice escape. Like... What the fuck? Deemo is also painted as a lazy and unhelpful character. In the Reborn version of the game, Deemo actually helps you complete puzzles, and in Mobile and Reborn he consoles Alice when she cries. But here he just stands and stares... The plot clearly hinges on the Forgotten Hourglass endings from mobile Deemo. As you replay the hourglass over and over, you unlock artworks of Alice moving on. She makes friends, graduates, and becomes a pianist. However the movie uses it's flashbacks to give Alice more depth. It takes advantage of the hourglass art, showing us Alice while she's in school and making friends. This doesn't feel as powerful , the artworks could be interpreted as Alice overcoming her sorrow and moving on, while the movie only uses it as a platform for lore no one asked for. We are also introduced to a professor, who's sole role in the movie is to plainly dump the entire story in the last few minutes for those who weren't able to put 2 and 2 together in the first 10 minutes. Now animation complaints: IRL Mirai is animated in 2D. But everything else is 3D. This leads me to believe the movie was originally intended to be 2D animated, but they realized soon in it would be too expensive. So they turned to 3D, which by the way, they rendered all the characters in an uncanny and menacing way. This magical spirit Deemo, the one I cried for in the mobile ending, me and my Brother couldn't stop making jokes about how he looked like he was ready to snap Alice's neck. All in all this movie is extremely disappointing for long time fans, and paints the original plot in a bad light for those who aren't aware of the mobile game. I only gave it 2 stars because despite the flaws I still slightly enjoyed it, and the OST is phenomenal. So if you plan on watching this via renting digitally or buying the Blu-ray version, buy the OST instead and please play the mobile game. It's actually been made free since it released years ago. Trust me, you'll have more fun with the grindy tree growth mechanic than watching this.

Aaaaa welcome back, looking sharp! # I feel like Deemo should have ended with the original mobile game, or maybe reborn. It just felt.... complete as is? I didn't want the ending to be so sad, and bittersweet, but godfreckingdammit I wouldn't change it. It's a real shame that everything afterwards just didn't live up to the source material for me, even Deemo II just didn't grab me at all :(

Playing the game as a kid I found the story was honestly heartfelt and great, I really wasn't expecting it when looking for random mobile rhythm games but I was gladly surprised by it.

I bought the manga and I love those volumes more than the movie. The prelude made me love Hans, but "Zakura Notes" made me sorrowful (even though I knew Hans's end). This story will be unforgettable. 🥺🥺🥺

Right when you said it was the first rhythm game movie I was about to rush to the comments and talk about the horrific and forsaken movie "La máquina de bailar" but you did mention it! It's absolutely horrible, very cheesy spanish humor from the 2000s (that includes a lot of subtle racism) and the plot is... something. It was an absolute blast to watch it on a movie night with some friends though! Now we always joke about it whenever we see a DDR. Still can't believe how Konami aproved it ahahahahahahha

I had Deemo on my phone for a while but Ive been so deep into Taiko for years playing different rhythm games just doesn't hit the same xD.

I loved the game (I only played the mobile ver) but I knew from the moment I saw the trailer that I would not like the movie. I'll ignore the animation since it's obvious why it's not good. If they were going to draw the story out, I don't know why they didn't continue with the secret after story of her becoming the masked lady and her true acceptance from deemo the last recital

Implosion: ZERO_DAY died for this 😭 I still have morbid curiosity for this movie since I was a Deemo player since the early days. I remember the story progressing, players putting together hints (with my favorite being the heartbeat monitor noises and Taiwanese Children's Hospital coordinates revealed by tapping certain objects), and then the grand finale with Mirai and the final message before the credits. But at the end of the day, I feel like Deemo's main story isn't best suited for a movie of this length. It could have made an excellent short film. Hell, it might have even been better if it went the Interstella 5555 route of zero dialogue but had scenes supported by its soundtrack. Anyways I believe Rayark's last big "wow" moment for me was Cytus II's 3.0 ending. Things really just haven't been the same, even before there was actual controvery

La Maquina de Bailar is quite an experience, 0/10 would watch it again due to how shit it is, although good luck finding it, it's basically lost media. I actually learned about that movie's existence due to a poster in my arcade, and since it's one of the few arcades in Spain with rhythm games, they can find some stuff

Huh... so this is a genre of movie now... 🙃 ... Actually, this could be pretty cool. I remember this awesome DDR comic where the main characters were also love interests, there was a love triangle, and there was a scholarship involved, and some juicy family drama and shiz. And I kinda liked it. Who knew just adding a rhythm game would make me interested in boilerplate teen dramas. Like a sports movie, but actually good AND I actually know about the 'sport'. I mean... The OG story worked because of it's presentation and the overall mysterious but wondrous tone of the game. Stretching it out to a full-length was already enough to kill it, and the lack of budget or fucks to give from the studio was the final nail in the coffin

maan i had no idea there was an ending, a pc/ps4 remake, or a movie lol. I started playing before that big update- which I assume was the one that added the ending lol,(i think there was at the time only 3 packs u could buy) and it was the only game I actually gave money too. I never actually got the tree to grow much, felt it grew really slowly so i lost interest in playing songs over and over. There wasn't enough new stuff being introduced fast enough whether that was story or songs to keep me hooked, which is a shame cause I really did and probs still do like the game. Introduced me to new artists to listen to so that was a plus- such a shame bout this movie tho. Feel it probs would've been better if a group of fans did something on yt lol
