Redditors said they wanted to see wobbly wheels, so I built a remote control robot platform to test it out! Could weird, wobbly wheels be better than regular wheels???

When a wheel is out of balance which is exactly what a wobbly wheel would be it throws the car all over at higher speeds very rough ride indeed.

I'm not interested in drawing this up, but I welcome someone else to: You want more ground clearance to avoid bottoming out. You need fins for traction without being so deep they creating a rotary shovel. Finally, you want to spread the surface area of the wheel across the largest possible ground surface to prevent the wheels from sinking or digging into lose sand, similar to a snow shoe. Create wheels with 3 spokes, each ending in a kind of curved snowshoe (like you had a full wheel but cut away everything except a few ovals of tread). Use the largest gaps between the snow shoe hatches that can still can compact loose sand without letting a lot through. Elongate a few of the hatches on the snow shoes just enough to dig into sand, but no more. Think about which diagonals to use for the traction fins. I'd lean toward using the same angle on the two diagonals, but reversing it for the adjacent wheels. Other options include having the left match and the right match, and they can either create an arrow, pressing sand in, or a V pressing sand out. The last option is matching the two front, and matching the two back, but I fear that would create a tenancy to pull the front and back in different directions and encourage spinning in place in certain situations. Likewise, think about the contact pattern as the wheels rotate, so that you always have 2 snow shoes down, and curve the leading and trailing edges of the snow shoes so they contact smoothly and not on edge, particularly when starting from a stop.
@perwestermark8920
@perwestermark8920 3 года назад
I was.about to start a thread on a similar theme. - Larger diameter to get more ground clearance. - Bigger width to span more sand - Mesh surface to still have similar surface area despite larger diamwter and width. - Some regular "blades" that can shoot sand backwards.

This is marvellous work! Congratulations! I would love to see how they compare when they are combined to a thorus. According to the last part of the video, the common wheels are combined with these patterns so they get more traction. Maybe when these patterns are around a thorus (or common wheel), they don't end up digging in the sand, but the pattern is still exploited to go forward.

What I was going to say, the failing point of all wheels were the body bottoming out, maybe if he made a platarm capable of bigger wheels and a much higher ride height those sooner could fair better (probably won't help that much, but hey, at least it will be their actual fault when the vehicle bogs =P)

Also controller seems to be unfair on wheel torque. In 13:28 You can clearly see that on left side there is not uniform control of motors. Rear one which has traction spins, but front one which is in the air doesn't. As a system without traction or torque control, both wheel should spin with front one being faster. For me it looks like there is not enough power in battery to provide uniform power delivery to all motors, or the controller is doing bad job.

in sand and while climbing, what you need is a licked differential usually used in the rear, it makes it that the wheels on both sides are only able to turn at the same speed. this would eliminate most of the burying problems with the wheels because it could use all the wheels to get out of a hole instead of just the one that got stuck :/ great content, subbed right away

Thanks for posting this MM. Love the Oloid and the Wobbler, such smooth movers. On my drive to work I go past a garden full of different metal wind turning illusions which all look great when they move in unison. Seeing the Wobbler I'd have thought that vibration would be quite bad at high speed but I think the 5 spoke is a good wheel. Also surprising was how well the 4 different wheels worked together. I mix plasters and mortars and want an optimum paddle mixer end that mixes the material by pulling it up from the bottom of the bucket to the top and wondered if you could come up with something. If it works well then we should go 50/50 on any profits made from it's online global sales :) Earlier this year I bought a fancy revolutionary new whisk made from a polyurethane resin that looked like 2 elongated O's on a stick which turned out to be rubbish at mixing mortar but may be revolutionary with gypsum plaster because it has finer granules, I don't know and didn't bother finding out because it was shite at the work I needed it to do and went back to my original circular whisk and got my money back. Otherwise how about a film on different wind turners please.

Regarding the “pull to the right” That’s because of the carpet pile direction. I’ve notecard that many time with a vacuum. You push it one was and the carpet pushes its to the side. Go the Other way across and pushes the same cardinal direction.

Definitely. Increase the clearance and reduce wheelbase by putting the motors under the control unit, with the wheels sticking out the sides, maybe even with sorts of legs to increase it further. I would also go 1,5 times wheel diameter as not to reduce torque too much but increase contact patch surface. And use the same principe as the offroad tyre, your last wheel was great.

@neonsamurai1348

Yes, and far too much torque being applied through the wheels causing it to dig down very quickly rather than griping. The operator should go gentler on the throttle, and not slam it on full when it starts to get stuck, which seems to be most people's impulse and which makes it even harder to get out. Sand is one of the easiest materials to get stuck in if you gun it.

Geometry be weird, but really, you've just made a diagonal width of the strip on the slanted wheel, straight on the disc wheel. If the length doesn't change, it must increase the width compared to an absolute Y-axis. Like if you rotated the diagonal line in a square to be oriented like one of its sides, that diagonal would now be longer than the sides. Took me a second though! Nice video :)

probably not, as the wheel turns it would create a force that could theoretically push the car forward, but it is very weak. then it would continue to rotate and make the exact same force in the opposite direction, pushing the car backward.

I reckon two things need to change- 1. Test on multiple terrains, of course any wheels with a perfectly smooth contact surface would get absolutely trashed on anything except smooth concrete 2. Double or triple the surface area allowed, as we can see even standard wheels have insufficient traction

The 8 spoke design had more surface area than the others. It was utilizing 3 sides of each spoke during the sand tests, versus the one side it was using on the carpet. This is apparent, when you see the close up of the wheels sheet going through the sand. It had sand on at least the sides of spoke, revealing it had more contact area. Make sure that's corrected in future data :)

Its most certainly within your capabilities to be able to figure out the simplicity of an ESC/Motor/Receiver/Transmitter system. It's very straight forward, and with the advancements of technology, modern RC's are a much simpler, more reliable system. I figured it out, and I feel you're well above my comprehension!! Very impressive. You do know of course that if you replaced the wheels with tank treads, it would get more traction and more surface area contact with the sand. I wanted to make such a vehicle with tank treads that actually wrapped around the entire vehicle, so that the full surface of the vehicle was in contact with the sand. I think that would be the best way possible to keep a vehicle from getting trapped in the sand.

When it comes to loose material like sand, it's all about having paddle wheels that act kind of like a scoop. You want to push against as much material as you can, but you don't want it getting stuck in any recesses the tire has.

@davejacob5208

you should try to make the "prongle"-wheels have four wobbles instead of two, that might give them some sort of additional "digging"-capability, due to those wobbles catching sand in between themselves.
