Adejumo Olabode and Abdul Mustafar, founders of Phoenix Robotics, came into the Den with the dream of putting Nigeria's budding robotic industry on the global map. Seeking an investment of N20 million for 12% equity, the duo quickly realise that growing a business isn't child's play.

*JS is Rubbish:* C++ compilers compile programs directly into machine code thereby speeding up program execution. This is why it is very much preferred in the robotic space (and any space that cares for precision and speed). Also, the profile Kabir shared about Mr Kyari suggests to me that he has dealt with a lot of interesting software solutions (which obviously may have been written in C++), but is/was not necessarily a software developer. So that may explain his strong bias for C++. I still think that no programming language is "rubbish", as languages keep evolving and each has specific use cases that others can't easily fit into. You won't hear much about C/C++ or Java being used in either frontend or backend web development, just like you wouldn't hear of JavaScript doing much in machine learning. *The Robot:* At 1:53, these guys referred to the robot arm as one of their "inventions". I'm not sure they know what an invention is. You can literally find hundreds (if not thousands) of DIY videos on pick and place robotic arms on YouTue. Other than what everyone does out there, this robot arm isn't doing anything new/unique that can catch anyone's attention. As a robotics enthusiast, I understand that setting up a robotics business in Nigeria is no easy feat. So many hurdles to overcome: the need for a more stable power supply, more robust internet access, strong support from government or at least, policies that favour innovation and creativity, etc. My suggestion for them is to go for more skill development and come up with unique solutions addressing specific challenges in specific sectors (rather than a general idea of what robotic arms can be used for). Good luck to them :)

like exactly, lots of DIY videos on such projects. They will also experience problems when building the actual thing in terms of stability analysis and transient response, programming some servo motors using whatever micro-controller platform is not the main robotics, the mathematics of the controls and instrumentations are the main issues they will encounter when implementing an industrial version. even with all the mathematical analysis, various iterations will need be made until they determine perfectly well certain instrument parameters for the robot. Lets not even mention reliability and MTTF/MTTR/MTBF tests. That 20million will barely be sufficient for perfection of the industrial version.

Wrong cost and manufacturing analysis. This is not the type of business you build for the first time and you think companies will start buying, they're more advance and trusted robotics companies they would rather buy from as they are many safety regulations and certifications you must go though before even selling 1 single machine. Robotics and manufacturing are intense and expensive, 20M for a big automated machine is not even close. It needs funding from an institute or the government. They should create complete robotics that can solve a specific problem in a small sector or university and do an open demo, for example, create an automated wheelbarrow or something people use on a daily instead of a gigantic machine that costs billions, that will attract investors who can invest in research and development. But big-ups brothers, what a good start, dream big, don't stop. If Naija no get your time, find money create a working demo and apply for different International robotics demo programs, Or just focus on a software business that will make a lot of money, and then you'll have a little capital to invest in robotics and heavy duty machines.

I think the main issue here is lack of innovation or development to the current product. If they had come with a plan of development for a product seeking for pre-seed investment to develop and execute a better robot for the market place not say they want to sell this machine arm that basically just picks and drops and still needs a human to operate it? Kyari's criticism was with respect to robotics. If you are not into robotics even as a programmer, you don't have the right to condemn his statement on that. He didn't mean JavaScript is useless as a programming language. Its just like wanting to use java to create animations on a web application instead of using JavaScript. Some programmers that understand what the tradeoffs are will make the same statement for JavaScript against java and that won't imply java is useless. Yes, programming languages are evolving but they will still continue to have their areas of strengths and weaknesses.

His criticism was actually misplaced. Nobody goes into robotics with Javascript in their mind as the core language. My primary languages are python and Javascript and I had to learn C for a simple robotics project I needed to work on. He really didn't need to bring Javascript in that context because it wasn't necessary and he ended up rubbishing the language for nothing. Unfair stuff coming from someone with so much experience.

I got to admit its hard to see what they have, that any big global business cant do. If Amazon was to open a warehouse and automate it as much as possible i cant help but feel they would ship in the robots from their global supplier. I could be VERY wrong and have a very Western POV, but I think they need to spend some time working in a big tech company somewhere (USA, Japan etc), then come back and offer a factory design and fit out service. If NOTHING else at least built that prototype out into reality.

It is ok for building a "quick and dirty" MVP, even now people are using Rust. In the area of robotics, C or C++ would be more appropriate for commercial purposes every single time. There are specific timing guarantees that are needed, that Javascript was not designed with in mind. Robotics is too serious of an industry to play with a language without these guarantees in mind i.e. is not even compiled but interpreted. Any real-time system (firm or hard) in the case of robotics wouldn't think of JS for core purposes.
