This Scene Blew Me Away (Breakdown of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish)

A detail that I picked up on which you didn't point out is that when Puss says "Puss in Boots laughs in the face of death" and then looks at the wolf and calls him a "bounty hunter", Death *scratches the table* with his finger just before pulling away. It's the first hint at his frustration with Puss and I love it.

One of my favourite details about this film is actually one of the behind the scenes videos, where they show the development for the panic attack scene. In the scene, they've got a gross, low-detail, shaders/textures missing version of Perito and all the geometry is just grey, but for Puss, they're just using the OG Puss model from Shrek 2. Technology advanced so much between the films that the original Puss can now be rendered in realtime with next to no effort, and that's crazy.

I didn't really notice this before, but watch what happens to all of the special effects in the shots after Puss gets hit. The stylized motion blur of the sword is replaced with a more photoreal vector blur. The hand-painted milk splashes are replaced with a simulated blood drop (or at least animated in the geometry of the scene instead of on top of it). Even the sharp, intense shadows are replaced with ones with softer edges like you see in raytraced renders. The whole scene becomes more *real* now because the fight just became *real*. There's a newfound tangibility that mimics Puss' realization that he actually may die here. MAN, this movie is so creative.

There were 8 empty glasses on the bar top. Puss is drinking his 9th glass. It's the little details that are the most meaningful.

As for game animator, I always amazed by dream works' character animations in movie

25:55 love that frame because that's an instinctive pose for cats when they are truly afraid. great physical expression of his fear. his instincts are kicking in.

Ayo, weird thing to ask. Does anyone else just start tearing up randomly while watching someone fully enjoying and appreciating someone else’s craftsmanship and work on a project?

The shot of Puss when blood starts coming down his head is great on a thousand levels. One level I want to address is how you can see Death in the reflection of his eyes. He’s not laughing, not fuming, not mocking him. He’s just *there*. He’s just standing there, calmly watching and waiting before saying anything. In that moment, Death doesn’t feel like an actual character with a personality. This is where his true nature as, well, a force of nature, shines through. Death as a concept is dispassionate, inevitable to every living thing. And in that moment, while he is savoring Puss’s fear, we can’t really see the pupils of his eyes. We only see the red of the rest of his eyes. It makes him look more inhuman, like he’s truly this force of nature so far above and beyond the mortal plane of comprehension. This moment isn’t just Death savoring fear since as a person that’s what he likes to do. This is the force of the universe, death, staring Puss right in the face, ready to fulfill its natural purpose. It’s almost like how Chernabog is the literal embodiment of evil, and can’t be reasoned with. The way he doesn’t say a word in this shot, doesn’t change his expression when he could easily grin. He is simply staring right at his target, knowing he doesn’t need to attack him too hard because he’s just Death and can’t be defeated. He’s here for Puss.

Honestly, I'd LOVE to see this kind of analysis for the ENTIRE film. Obviously not very possible lol, and I'm not an animator or animation student or anything, but animation has always been an absolute Fascination of mine. The Last Wish is one of those movies where I just soak up every last animation detail for no reason other than the artistry of it. Animation has got to be my favorite artform by a long shot, consistently blowing my mind with feats like this movie, and I just think animators are absolutely insane in the best and most talented way possible. I'd love to see more breakdowns like this!!

An interesting impact frame around 27:28 uses a negative filter, adding a color sheen to the weapons as they hit. The creative use of color and the economy of motion in two's are so solid in this movie and are inspiring, to say the least. Huge thanks for framing through this scene; now I really want to analyze some scenes myself, it seems like fun.

I would love a breakdown of the giant fighting scene, because I feel like in all of the reactions I've seen of this movie (including my own) that is when it really hits the viewer just how mind-blowing the rest of this movie's fight scenes are going to be. Just that part where Puss is running on the rooftops towards the giant, as it is winding up the bell swing and then crashing through the roofs - it's seared into my mind.

Your detail starting from 22:33 is very correct and I just noticed it now. The pose which puss makes is iconic and puss always hits his target when he does that since his first appearance (even in the start of the movie) so the animators were giving hope to people but instead just baited us which is an example of how much effort every person behind this masterpiece has put in

ngl i would love to see your thoughts on this scene vs the final fight scene, because the dynamic shift between the fights has always been so interesting to me. Especially with how they somehow keep Deaths aggressiveness and focus entirely on Puss, while showing his own shift from scared to determined. Loved the video btw, this movie has so much artistically that ive adored studying ever since i saw it last year. Always fun to learn more about the animation behind it!

When Dreamworks wants to go hard, they go *hard*

I love that when they show the empty barstool from above, you can see the smoke coming off the candle that is framed right next to the stool smoking, showing that the light just flickered out.

The thing that's so interesting about smear frames, composition, all these things that lead the viewer's eye and give them more information is that 99% goes completely unnoticed. Nobody walks out of a theatre and goes like "oh man, did you see that really strong key pose in the final fight scene?" All of this stuff is completely subconscious. It's all about altering not what they see, but what they *feel*. I guarantee you nobody bat an eye as Puss's sword being swiped from his hands as packaged, but without that smear going across the frame I think *everyone* would be really confused what happens. The best details to include are unfortunately often the ones that get the least recognition because they're just a tumbling snowball of a bunch of tiny things that make up a big, cohesive picture and an enjoyable viewing experience.

“Nothing in animation happens by accident” True, since everything needs to be individually animated. Hey, I think you would love Murder Drones by Glitch Productions. The newest episode is the best animation they’ve done so far, and it is so clean. Plus all of the background lore that was intentionally placed there frame by frame. It’s actually kind of insane.

The way the sickle was accentuated on Death’s cloak when Puss was getting his sword, also shows that that was the weapon he uses; perhaps this is foreshadowing?

Genuinely one of Dreamwork's greatest, most beautiful movies they've ever made!! It's my favorite for sure, everything is SUCH eye candy!! The blend of 2D inspired by anime is GENIUS and so, so pretty!! I adore the art style of this movie through and through. This movie is truly a work of art in and of itself! This is definitely one of the best films to come from Dreamworks, everything about it just hits perfectly

another thing i find interesting is that the scene before this, each of his 8 lives are punctuated by this big red and black screen and the numbered death. then the next time we see that color, it's 28:50 and it's deaths color scheme. as if this would have been his 9th death

The moment when the lightning flashes is death's eyes is the best. Evokes a wild animal coming into your flashlight/camp fire light. Instinctive fear, which is topical for what he's saying.

With the hit on Death, you have to remember that Western animation is borrowing heavier and heavier from the anime, and in anime, you have this trope called "afterimage" during fights. Puss didn't hit Death, because he started moving before he or us even noticed, and that duplication at the end fits perfectly well into that trope.

You know, I have seen a lot of breakdowns on movies and such to notice the Dutch Tilt when it's used in films. It usually doesn't tamper with my experience, but it's a moment of "oh they're doing the thing and it works so well in this moment!". Puss in Boots did such a good job with, well, everything in the animation where I didn't even notice it until watching this breakdown. Now THAT is incredible work of the animators and the rest of the team that constructed these scenes. Also, this was such a fun vid to watch. I'm not even an artist but I just admire the work put into the craft of art like this film, so hearing your professional analysis is such a wonderful peek into what professionals like you do. I probably wouldn't watch Puss in Boots 2 yet, because I didn't like the first movie soo much, but your analysis inspired me. So we watched the movie untill after the first scene with death. Im convinced that this scene took up half the budget. It's almost like you forgot the the main character is Puss because of the care they gave to death, not but just in this scene but every time he shows up.

I mean the finale would be the obvious choice for another breakdown if it has more to dicuss. Or the panic attack scene for something a little different. For a different video entirely, a comparison of the same scene from 2D to 3D Lion King.

In the scene where Death first brings out his sickles, there's a rather conspicuous break in continuity between the reflection of Puss's expression and the one we see a frame later when the camera turns to him. I've been trying to figure out if that's some sort of artistic choice or just a mistake, but I just don't get it.
