I agree. I also have watches throughout many price ranges and my first watch that I considered to be a gift to myself after college was an elongated rose gold tank Seiko on a brown leather strap that looks like a Gruen Curvex or Cartier Tank Americaine and I still have it in my collection. Quite frankly I’m not going to wear a Cartier, JLC or the like if I’m leaving the house expressly to fill my car with fuel or shop for groceries nor would I wear them if I was tending to my garden. A fuel station isn’t the most prudent place to wear a Rolex and the parking lot of a grocery store is also an impractical place to be overdressed these days. In truth I find that I expect to bruise even some of my mid level tier of luxury watches performing office work and reserve some of my best pieces for leisure only. I personally think that having a Seiko solar quartz is the ultimate care free watch. It never needs any maintenance at all. You can sleep wearing them, swim and bathe in them. This company is amazing at being better than anything in its segment and having many question why the next few segments above them exist.
I agree with where you started. That Seiko is a terrific watch, and I'd like to have one. But having one will not make me love my Datejust any less. Said another way, having a Datejust doesn't make the Seiko irrelevant. This habit doesn't have to draw blood every time out. But if you take some pain *some* of the time, it has a way of making the pain-free ones seem even cooler.
I just don't understand why so called enthousiasts need hacking, esp. in conjunction with hand winding. Do they all serve in the SAS or Delta Force and therefore collectively need to know exactly what time it is (not to mention that accuracy is never 100%)? If so, buy a watch with atomic time sync.
Worth every penny and a whole lot more as well but don't tell Seiko. You know what they're like at the minute for rinsing every thing they can out of the customer 😁. Great review for a great watch. Cheers A.B
The seiko 5s are great entry for new collectors and they worth the price. btw Friday is pronounced in Arabic "Al-jumaa" and "aa" is actually a special letter in Arabic which doesn't have an equivalent to give an example lol but it's hard to pronounce for non native Arabic speakers
Hi, greetings from Colombia. Just wanted to tell you I got into watches after seeing your snkl41 video. I spent almost 3 months watching videos and reviews when I found the seagull 1963. Saved a lot and went with the hked 1963 which I love. Now I went back and ordered this snkl45j1 from jomashop as my second watch. If you could give me some tips or anything you want to share with me about this j version, it would be amazing. Sorry if my english is not so good
I’ve had it for two years now, it’s been in the stock folded stainless bracelet, have to find some leather options other than black. Trying to find a tan or even an ostrich leather for it.
I think the Seiko 5's are well styled, well made, respectable watches, especially considering their prices. They are easy to wear precisely because they are quite cheap. I own two and am still looking.
Thanks for the video. I guess I'm looking for a more accurate time keeping watch. And suggestions? Affordability is key as well, I'm at around $200 - $300 price range.. thanks
This was the first automatic watch I got for myself last year and I've since got another 6 - 7 watches... it's really like that speed drug that gets you hooked into the whole hobby.
have a similar piece . same movement slightly bigger and with arabic numerals. swapped the frankly bad bracelet with a brown horween and it is a lovely thing.....makes me want a grand seiko
Gorgeous photography. I have one of these with the deep blue face. WAY cool. Paired with a navy faux croc strap it really works. The crocs rocks! Whatever.
Seiko probably didnt think these small size watches would be so popular. I love my seiko 5 which looks similar to this one but has a 6 and 12 marker. I like the touch of red.
I love the snkl45. What keeps me from buying it is the size. 37mm is fine for me but from 12 to 6 it is only 35mm. I wonder how it would wear on my wrist
I bought mine right before 2020 started. It just recently stopped keeping time. I have worn the watch every day and stopped wearing it for a week and just felt empty. Like... something was missing. It is the companion that is always here even when I’m not thinking about it. It is being serviced right now. I had the decision of buying a $250 seiko or service my current watch and have it much better regulated and healthier. I chose to service my snk. The only thing that the snk doesn’t have for me is water proofing and a little bit more size. It’s $100 and you can’t beat it at that price range. Best purchase I have made this year. Cheers guys. Happy to be reunited with my SNK next week
You love that Lange. This is a video about a Seiko, yet the Lange got almost as much time. I like the Seiko, but the last thing I need is another cheap watch. I think most of us in this hobby start out with the $100 watches and work our way up.
Great looking watch. I actually prefer it to the SNKL23 which everyone seems to go crazy about. Love it. I’ve got one on order. I’m glad someone else thinks it’s cool too
I have this watch and it's beautiful but I wish it were a larger case. On my 7 ¼ wrist it's just a tad too small in my opinion. Other than that, the bracelet is pretty sub par. The non hacking/non hand winding is behind the times nowadays. Overall, it's not the greatest but it's a pretty solid automatic watch with good looks. Its pretty good but I suspect it'll just lead you to buy something else that's more satisfying.
I bought 4 seiko 5s around 1990,1 in 1998 and 1 in 2011,I can go months without wearing one (years even)and they always start right away.citizen eagle 7s are always good as well but I don't think they make them anymore.
I have found it on Amazon and on eBay. Joma Shop has fantastic offers when you’re based in the USA 🇺🇸. If not, they charge you quite a lot. And there are lots of different opinions about this company online. Anyway, 👍for presentation
Great review, nice looking watch, but I find it hard to get interested in any watch that can't be hand-wound. This for me is the big drawback of the 5's. Wish they would offer with the NH35/36 movements.
Great video AB. My son bought his first watch with his money and he bought a Seiko 5. He loves that watch and when asked when he is going to upgrade he just says why, I already have a watch, and to this day he never goes anywhere without his Seiko 5. Thanks again, Brian.
Great video I'm tore between Seiko SNLK45 Black baby Sarb Seiko SNXS79k Black Sun burst dial Seiko SNK393 Black Dial with 12 and 6 numbering SEIKO SNK361 Black textured dial
Definitely this line is a starter. Sadly, and probably for most, we dig it, wear it, then work our way to a $250, then a $500, then a $1000. But you have to start somewhere.
After 2 decades of watch collecting, I've never seen this 5 with the Red second hand, it does really add to the watch's character. Unfortunately with my 7.6" wrist I think it is probably too small for me, where 38mm is the absolute smallest I would go...
Just got a Seiko 5. Beautiful watch for the price. But without handwinding and not wearing it everyday, i find myself having to shake it for a minute to get it restarted. Then reset the time. Its quite annoying. How long do you guys need to shake it/wear it to get it restarted?
Get a watch winder and you'll never have that problem again😁👍, you'll have to shake it for about a min straight, it should be almost fully wound by then.
Seiko is fine. Jomashop sold me a defective watch that they took 7 months to repair and only then after I contacted my credit card company. I had bought around 25 watches from them and they treated me like crap.
Oof 25 seconds a day? I get that a lot of people love mechanical watches, I really do and I respect that. At the same time I have a $15 Casio quartz watch with a 10 year battery. I set it to atomic time 3 weeks ago and today it’s off by 1 second. This fact alone makes it difficult for me personally to want to invest much money in a mechanical watch. Cheers.
I have 2x Seiko 5s (SNXG47K1 and an SNXS79K) and 2x Orient TriStars on my cheap Chinese watch winder, both Seikos will be 10 minutes out after a month, the Orients less than a minute. Lose the folded link nasty bracelets on all 4 watches and swap them out for leather and they all look much more expensive than they actually were.
You left out the most important detail. The watch is an SNKL45 J1 model. Made in Japan. It has " Made in Japan " stamped on the dial at the 7 o'clock position and on the transparent case back. " Japan " is also stamped on the bracelet clasp and winding rotor. The J1 model is a bit more expensive than the K ( Malaysia ) model, but those stamps are worth it.
Is it though? I know lots of people oppose the idea of buying a chinese watch, but there are watches they sell for under $60 with a seiko nh35 movement and sapphire crystal... I somewhat agree that Seikos are great, but they are no longer the super affordable value kings they used to be. I'd say for 50 it would be amazing, for around 80-110 i can do better. But nice watches for sure.
These videos have been amazing. The value on the Seiko 5 is just hard to pass on. Im just not getting tired of this WCS x Jomashop partnership. Can you review a AP next?
The J models are Made in Japan. They have Arabic/English day indicators. The K models ( Malaysian ) have Spanish/English day indicators. When ordering your Seiko 5, make sure it's a J model.
well maybe I'm the luckiest seiko fanboy, i have this seiko 5 and the other one snkk87, and the accuracy is only +1s/day, sometimes it is 0s/day.. never regulate it ever.. I started to doubt to enter higher end seiko watch 😂, seiko 5 giving me more than i paid..
Makes me laugh when people say they want a more accurate watch,it's probably the same people that turn up late for events wearing a quartz digital timepiece.
I stop buying Seiko 5 watches because of the not very accurate 7S26 movement (I had to set it by an horologist). I own the discontinued SNLK23 (as you can see in my IG : marcf_777). It’s a very nice and more versatile watch as this one like you said (the second hand is steel and the dial has some relief). I will not wear it anymore may be if I got soon the SBGN003 or 5 🤔
