Japanese Pokemon Cards have violently surged in price over the last 3 months - a stark contrast to their English counterpart. While this is expected for Ultra Rare cards like Special Arts and Alternate Arts - namely the Latios and Latias GX - it's new territory for older cards from the Sun and Moon era of Pokemon Cards.
Nobody could have predicted the rapid rise of Trainer Rare cards - and I'm not talking about the Full Art 'waifu' cards - I'm talking about regular old Holographic Rares. Some, like the Lillie from Sky Legends, are being advertised for $115USD - but are they actually selling, and is this price justified?

Ay dios mio. As a seller im honestly kinda nettled by this. I always try to sell below market b/c i know people arent made of money and im genuinely interested in helping people out, and im nettled b/c now i have to take cards like these out of my inventory. Im not going to charge $80 for a holo rare, but im also not going to sell it to someone at the old price b/c then they can just make a flip on me, i feel like that would only perptuate the cycle. I hate it when artificial market pumping actively effects what i do and dont put in my inventory, but inegrity > money IMO. Anywho great video and thank you for showing all these super cool cards! :)

Appreciate you highlighting this! I'm glad I picked up the cards I wanted (I skipped most of the alt arts) from these Sun & Moon sets before this but man what a bummer for newer collectors. Even the base Ultra Rares are so nice with that Arita artwork, but glad to see you showing how common they are as I paid maybe a dollar for each if even a while back 😞

There is so much of the sun and moon bulk out there since the boxes were so cheap for so long. Tag bolt is the only set that I remember having a problem finding for sub 45 a box

Its expensive now for the booster boxes but you always put it place if your just doing for the hobby and the buy the cards that is useful for playing but then again if you think of reselling it then buy the ones that is very expensive cause it will not go down in value but just rising

Totally agree with you. BUT, my big question is, who's buying them? They can be listed for whatever price, but is anyone buying them at that exorbitant price? There might be some who'd do so out of FOMO, or are too naive to realise they're being had. But I don't think that's enough to sustain the prices

You're right, there's definitely people reselling between themselves to make it seem like there are people buying it. Whenever you see "oh this collectible sold for XYZ!" it's most likely a scam publicity stunt. There's a video all about it in regards to retro video games that's worth watching. The issue is these people will go to such lengths to also maintain these exorbitant prices so they become the new norm, these people don't care about the hobby at all. They will buy all the stock up from sealed to singles and then set the new price so unless the bubble bursts entirely they will make a profit.

I do the exact same thing you do with hoarding everything even the bulk and have organized it multiple times. The reason I dipped a toe into Japanese cards was because of that video breaking down the pull rates. It's fun to rip open but never thought they would pump these abundant holos. Love the shiny cardboard, still sad I never pulled the mosaic japanese birds. Never going to sell, to precious of a memory.

I appreciate any and all news about the trading card scene. Silly for people to say you're virtue signaling or whatever. I have a lot of SM bulk (when I started JP card collecting) that I wish I could get rid of. These cards spiking in price should be good news for me but I honestly just hate it. I collect because I love to and the cards. Monetary value is a plus but not the ends to a means for me personally so older cards spiking this hard just furthers the gap between being able to collect comfortably. Not sure when that will happen again if ever. Also, I might have to store my bulk like this. A good way to keep things organized. What type of sleeves are those that are holding the bulk stacks?

I wouldn't say that the Japanese card market isn't being manipulated as over the past few months, I've seen some card do crazy pumps and card shops are trying to influence people to sell their bags at high prices...however, I disagree that cards like the Lillie TR are being pumped based on scarcity. First of all, when dream league was released back in 2019, people had a completely different mindset about the value of their cards. A lot of Japanese collectors dumped their Lillie TR cards in the bulk section of Japanese card shops and as a result, many copies got damaged. Also, less people sleeved their cards including the SR's because they were much much cheaper back then. For example, the Lillie special art card was valued at around 4000yen for the floor price a few months after the release. In the case of Lillie TR, the market is being driven by the narrative that all Lillie cards, or cards that have Lillie on are valuable and therefore everyone is buying them from card shops for around 25,000yen right now. I predict once the narrative dies down, the card will lower in price but still hold a higher low than before.

What scares me is influencers "influencing " the market. My example: watch anyone open, they all say" these are the most expensive cards we are chasing " right there alone sets a specific standard and its truly distrusting and disgraceful. Its supposed to be a hobby. Sure money is definitely involved I sell and collect myself. But I dont make content basically telling kids what to and not to look for in pulls. Forcing kids to only look for the "best cards" its a trash concept that no one wants to adress. Influencers have and will continue to ruined the hobby aince the pandemic. But as for you Okj... You will always be my number 1 guy on pokemon. Stay awesome! Sorry i needed to rant and i promise none of it was directed at you. 9.7 billion cards printed from March 2022-2023…. The situation in Japan is nothing but a joke now and quite sad people are resorting to manipulating cards that no one had any interest in for sub €1 and now been listed for 120-150 😂😂 the English equivalent has a stamped reverse holo from the regional championships and is only selling for €10. The acerola from full metal wall has a Pokémon league reverse holo 1st to 4th place stamped versions. Inherently a lot rarer. €5-10 max even for the first place stamped version to name a few examples. With the introduction of the silver/grey boarders in SV I could not care anymore for Japanese cards. The market is a joke over there. Altaria & Braixen CHRs going for 30-50 usd, yu nagaba promos, etc etc etc. 151 will be amazing, I’m not paying 120-150 euro for a box. I’ll happily wait until fall and collect the English version and get value for my money

You have to take into consideration how few people in the west actually had access to Jap booster boxes, at the time I started to buy them amazon and many online shops did not ship outside of Japan and you needed a buyee/tenso type of company to even source your boxes, this was expensive and the language barrier was too much for many collectors. I opened many boxes from that era, but still NOWHERE near what you opened. Sure there are lots of those cards around (especially in Japan, and I mean LOTS) but for the USA/Canada etc. markets who are just getting into Japanese card, there are not enough to go around. I do not agree that the prices should be anywhere near what I am seeing right now, but I do understand why, and I hate it. Sigh.

The Japanese market is going so crazy right now. Check out what's happening with the Japanese Moonbreon!! The market was bought completely empty. The PSA 10 card has jumped from 2000 euros to sometimes over 6000 euros in less than a few weeks. Where is all this supposed to lead? The Espeon Vmax Promo is also being pushed extremely. Current auctions at Yahoo auction are just over 1000 euros for a PSA 10!?! Accordingly, there will also be a sharp increase in the Eevee Hereos prices in the next few weeks.

I sold a fair amount of those Tag Team GX in one go abroad this week and wondered why. Nobody cares about the Japanese non-Tag Team GX's btw. I sell those for about 2 dollars each and honestly nobody buys the standard GX in Japanese compared to English. English fly out the store organically to normal collectors.

I don’t mean that to come across harsh but what your saying is irrelevant. If hundreds of these flood the market then the price will naturally drop. If no one lists any then the price rises. Wether you have bull or commercial collectors have thousands. If the supply injected into the market is small then the price naturally inflates. Doesn’t mean people should just not buy. It’s just how the market works
