I can’t afford a new amp. I did the Fremell mods, swapped in a Cannabis Rex, and replaced the reverb tank in my Blues Jr and it really opened the amp up, sounds really good now. You can find the Fremell mod instructions online and order like $30 in capacitors and resistors. The speaker was a little more expensive. But for like $150, you can really make this amp sing. Highly recommended to anyone who can’t afford to upgrade amps.

The BJr IV seems to be a different amp and I got one with a CR. Unless played loud and with gain I could never get it to sound bright enough. An older Jr would likely benefit from the CR. I swapped out the CR for a Jenson and I’m much happier.

You have done a few Blues Jr videos, and I’ve watched every one of them. So when this one came up, I was on it. I followed your advice and dialed down the mids and treble but kicked in a little reverb on my IV amp, and fiddled with them until I got what I was looking for. These newer tones sound terrific. Good stuff.

I came up with Fenders - '70s I had a 50 watt head & 2x10 cab with the band then later got a Twin. Last 20 years the only amp I've had in the studio is a Blues Jnr. and generally I back the mids off and find the clean balance depending on which guitar I'm using - anything from Strat to LP to Casino to Gretsch . . . and that gets me started for the chordal track, picking or strumming, then I usually bring in pedals for lead touches - Effectrode Blackbird, Victory Copper, Crowther Hot Cake, Distortion+ depending on the song but sometimes just go straight in and crank the amp. I recently got back a lovely 1957 Hofner Club 60 that I'd left back in NZ for 40 years (!) and I found a whole new sound pushing that thru the Aclam Dr. Robert with the Mach Schau on and mids at 11! It's a sort of hollow sound that sits well for rocky backing that I've been chasing for years (John Squire, the guy who has just done an album with Liam Gallagher, has it down to a tee). I've heard so much about the Princeton, though, so would love to get one at some point. Anyway, thanks as always for the great vids / discussions! Cheers.

Thanks for the video. People say that it does not help to change the tubes on these amps. But on my amp it helped alot for the better. And the stock speaker always sounded so bright it was almost painful. So i changed the speaker to a Warehouse speaker. Which made a big difference as well. Very happy with the amp now.

Same (though for more like 5yrs), and bone stock other than replacing tubes. At least for my playing style/guitars/use case, rolling the mids down is definitely the sweet spot for this amp, 90% of the time. That said, I've always been curious about the various mods to these (to open them up a bit), and of course speakers are a critical part of which frequencies ultimately hit our ears--so I think the longer I have it, the greater the likelihood of one alteration or another...

I always scooped the mids on my blues jr and now I have a blues deluxe reissue with a 12ay7 in v1 and a wgs et65 speaker and I still have the mids almost all the way down, the bass maybe 2-3 and the treble almost all the way up, on channel 1, input 1, presence around 2-3pm volume bout 3/4 up. I think I get some really good tones. When I crank the mids more it’s still a good tone it’s just not what I prefer it’s more of a rock n roll think where you need a little more overdrive. I play mostly clean with a wampler ego comp boosting the signal into input 1 and compressing just a little, and a UA golden reverberator, and a mythos mjolnir with the overdrive down and the output boosted going into the effects loop. I get pretty close to that slow dancing in a burning room tone. Guitar volume turned down to about 6, neck and middle with the neck tone about 4-5. It’s a really sweet tone. People hate on the blues deluxe a lot and I originally didn’t like it but it’s growing on me.

100% Jack. I have used these settings a ton on my Blues Jr, and find them to work equally well on my Fillmore 25 as well. Quick stomp on OD pedal can then reshape the tone for more focused solos, where necessary.

I have had the same Blues Junior ("Limited" Tweed) since 2007. When I decided that I wanted it to sound like a Princeton... I BOUGHT A PRINCETON. I know not everyone has the resources to do this but trust me - if you own both a Princeton and BJr, one will get played more than the other. (Used '68 Custom Princeton Reverbs can be found for under $750 and they are worth every penny.)
@sixbladeknife44
@sixbladeknife44 Месяц назад
I’ve owned two Princeton Reissues and never cared for them, they didn’t have prototypical glassy Fender cleans and didn’t take drive pedals nearly as well as the tweed Blues Junior. Not to mention the Princetons barely have any clean headroom. The 10 inch speaker doesn’t do it any favors either.
@barthrvatin8297
@barthrvatin8297 Месяц назад
@@sixbladeknife44 I am not sure you will find the “glassy cleans” in a Princeton Reverb, it doesn’t have a bright cap in the circuit like that of the AB763 amps vibrato channel. For that reason there is more warmth to the Princeton at lower volumes.
@evankolpack
@evankolpack 22 дня назад
@@sixbladeknife44 Agreed with both of you. There's a local studio guitarist who uses a Princeton with a strat and gets an AMAZING warm tone. It works for his playing, very, very, very well. So I decided I needed a Princeton. Well, it's a great amp, but it just doesn't work for me, for my style of playing. You're correct it doesn't have that beautiful clean Fender sparkle, which is the whole point as far as I'm concerned. I'm a huge fan of SRV's tone. I know it's cliche, but it doesn't get any better if you ask me. I have a vintage 66 Twin that gets very close, but for the $/size/weight, the BJ is damn close, and kinda does it's own thing and has it's own vibe. I do crank it up, but use a JHS amp box for a master volume instead of a speaker soak of some sort. I have speaker soak, but the JHS amp box was my lazy old guy choice. 🤣 I love my HRD. For a single 12” speaker try a cabinet with the dimensions of a deluxe reverb 10.5 - 12” deep, depending on how much bottom end you want. I’ve got a tweed Blues Junior. I’ve never really been able to dial in the tone I’m looking for on ANY amp. I bought a Super Champ XD and ended up liking it more. These videos are making me want to dust off the BJ and go find a used telecaster 😂

I quite like the mid range from a blues junior. I have a tweed one with a jensen speaker, put the eq at 666 and run a tubescreamer in the front. Works perfectly

I was set on getting a new Blues Junior tweed Ltd and walked out with a 68 custom vibro champ because it sounded so much better than the Blues Junior.

I roll back the midrange knob whenever I plug into a Fender amp ... (if there is a midrange knob, that is!)

I’ve bought 3 through the years cuz grab em up for good deals. Couldn’t wait to get rid of it every time.😂 The only time I got a great sound out of it was when I hooked it up to my Mesa 2x12 cab.

Yes, sounds good here, but how does it sound in a full band? Loads of amps sound good scooped when you have nothing else with them, but you lose them completely once you have more instruments at play.
@JackFossett
@JackFossett Месяц назад
The point is that the amp on its own is excessively midrangey, so by dialing back the mids knob, it still retains punch and warmth.

It does feel sinful scooping that much, but like you said, use your ears. Thanks for the tip

I have the same advice for anyone that has the 4x10 h.r. DeVille- at least for more lower output single coil sounds I started lowering the meds on that and boy does it sound better! (I feel it sound maybe is good as like a basement if I had enough money for new speakers...) But it's pretty freaking close...*my idea actually is to get a better sound cheaply is when I have enough money I'm just going to get a good 2x12 Marshall/ Marshall adjacent cab and run it in parallel with the current speakers I think it's going to sound excellent because right now I mix it with my 100 4 x 12 Marshall believe it or not! Because I have a cheap AV pedal doesn't even have a phase switch or whatever and they sound really good together but because of the fenders crap speakers I actually use the Marshall for the clean stuff and for the distortion I use the fender..

@coreyrini550 28 дней назад
**I forgot to add that this is the 4x10 Deville III - BC as Jack and others I think have noted the earlier versions tend to have a little bit crappy drive and distortion sounds but the drive channel on that version is actually pretty good

Sorry I work at a loud building and I can't use my hands...*trying to say lower the mid-range & it could sound as good as a fender bassman with relatively little work

The boxy sound is a function of the small particle board cabinet. It's not a terrible amp. It's just a terrible cab.

It's a matter of taste but I don't like the scooped tone....I recognised it immediately in the beginning of the video.I love mids and enjoy the boxiness of a Blues Junior...that's what makes the amp cool and applicable to certain types of Blues and Rock sounds.With the mids dialed so far back I find it lacks punch and sounds a bit unnatural.

The real trick to the Blues Jr is to turn the master almost all the way down and turn the vol up.

I would agree with you if he was swapping speakers or doing modifications to the circuitry to get a tone he likes from the amp, but c’mon man. Turning an EQ knob isn’t working hard.

It is a marginal amp with reliability issues, and difficult to repair!
@garymeador8812
@garymeador8812 Месяц назад
I haven't repaired a failed BJr yet, but I have modded my own and some for friends. The EL84 tubes are biased hot and can indeed fail early. The bias can be adjusted by replacing fixed resistors, or even by adding trim pots. The BJr is typical of the mass-produced amps with PC boards, and some folks may find PC boards difficult to repair. Point-to-point construction is great for amps that must endure the rough handling that comes with gigging, but P-to-P comes with a higher price tag. The Bassbreaker 15 is much more difficult to repair due to the arrangement of the PC boards. At least with the BJr, just the back panel can be taken off to gain access to the interior. An uncommon mod that I added to my own 2006 LE Tweed Bjr was tube tremolo effect featuring the unused half of the V2 12AX7 tube for the oscillator to modulate the bias voltage on the EL84 tubes.
