I love the boss tr2 tremolo with this amp completely agree that the amp should have a tremolo/vibrato button. It just sounds natural. I was also surprised how good my catlinbread "dirty little secret" sounds through the amp, given that it's a plexi drive.

Great video, thanks - I have kept my old Blues Junior altho most of my work is now DI since I closed my studio. My 'essential' rig for the amp over the last few years is: TC Electronic Polytune - Origin Cali 76 - Paul Crowther Double Hotcake - Effectrode Blackbird Valve Pre-Amp Pedal - MXR Analog Chorus - Neo Ventilator II (this where we switch to stereo for DI work) - TC Electronic Alter Ego (great because I can preset 3 tape delays, 1/4 note, dotted 8th, long 8th note) - Strymon Flint (with 'favourite' pedal so I can switch from Spring to Plate). Most of the time I am using my Sadowsky NYC S Style (HSH) and sometimes Strat so with the extra 2 modulation pedals I can go from a Bill Frisell to a 'clean Edge or Gilmour' sound. Pedals - doncha luv 'em!

I’ve found that my new Boss SD-1W works very well with pretty much all my amps. I’ve got a Boss Katana head, a blues junior, a hot rod deluxe and a Tonemaster Princeton, and it sounds so good with all of them. So my pedalboard will have my SD-1W forever.

My blues jnr/tele board has a tuner, Blackbox Overdrive 2, Mosky Silver Horse (Klon clone), Boss looper, and Boss RV6 for reverb. I never liked fuzz but I do like the sound of that Crosstown pedal you added.

Enjoying your videos Jack. I have a Tweed LTD Blues Jnr which I gig with, and I'm now using a Tech 21 Fly Rig v2 with the amp and it sounds great. I use a Joyo Ironman series noise gate and tremolo mini pedal in the FlyRig FX loop, and that covers al the styles I need, and is a compact setup, which is great for touring etc. Maybe you could demo the Tech 21 Fly Rig v2 one of these days?

Thanks 😊 I use a Germanium Face Fuzz then into all strymon pedals.. compadre into Sunset and the Riverside into Ola into Brigadier into big sky then into the Deco, I used to use a BD2 and ts9 and ds1 and I missed them so made a second small board. Question for you? I have the 57 Fender Champ 5 watt amp coming and I’ve never run stereo before so could I use my Fender Blues and the champ in stereo? If so how do I go about it.. any help would be appreciated..the strymon Deco is in last of the chain and all my research shows that pedal really shines in stereo..

Great video, and very timely for me. I've been thinking about amp specific pedal boards. I have a BJr III but don't use it much for some of the reasons you mention (mediocre FAT switch, no tremolo and footswitch limitations). I also have a Princeton Reverb (20W with 12" speaker) which suits me better. It seems some of the pedals you mention for the Blues Jr. would work well with the Princeton and others may not be necessary. If your series extends to the Princeton Reverb pedalboard I can't wait to see and hear that one!!

Nice one Jack! I seem to get speaker distortion/farty bottom end with humbuckers when running too much gain, even with the bass at 2-3. Do you get this as well? I was thinking of swapping the Jensen for a Celestion with tighter bottom end so I can run drive pedals more easily. I wonder if the OD3 would work better if you dialled the mids right back. Also, do you think the spiky mids would be tidied up by a different speaker or mainly a compressor?

My pedalboard setup for Blues JR right now: Pedal Pawn Octone > Boss OC-2 > MXR Phase 90 > Dunlop Crybaby Standard > Boss Blues Driver BD-2 (always on) > ProCo Rat > EHX Black Russian Big Muff > Danelectro Back Talk Reverse Delay > amp with Master cranked and volume on 2. In general I love this setup and happy to answer any questions. I am however looking for a mids-focused overdrive to complement the Blues Driver for solos and always on the lookout for a fuzz that jives better with the Blues Jr than the Big Muff (though I do love it).

Currently working on a pedalboard for a Santana PRS. It's my dream guitar and I just got it! Currently rocking a nobles ODR-1 running into a vertex SSS into a deluxe reverb. Also have an A/B box. The B channel is going into a Ceriatone HRM

This is a great series, Jack! Q: You cater pedals to your amps- but how much do you cater to guitars? You generally seem to go single coil, but just curious (I also focus more on the amp than the guitar in hand).

That’s actually an excellent idea and one I’ve kind of toyed with. I’ve thought about doing specific pedalboards for more specialty guitars, like an Epiphone Casino; but maybe it’s worth doing ones for even the classic guitars

I have the blues jr lll and am building a board, so this video is very helpful! You convinced me to start the chain with fuzz In your opinion, does the Ibanez classic tube screamer work with this amp? And would you recommend digital or analog delay?

With older version of it ( think it was v3) it work well…but two caveats, I got the handwired custom screamer that came in a metal container..and though I did like the handwired screamer the boss waza blues driver really was my fav…. That waza improves any amp I’ve plugged it into ….Also just fyi , I’m a shitty player lol…like a 10 yr beginner basically 🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️😬so maybe take that into account

Jack, strongly suggest swapping the order on the trem, reverb and delay... I would run Surfy into Meta into Hydra. I do not like the sound of reverb into delay much at all, it can be cool if you run the delay super heavy, panned, reversed, etc but 99% of the time, delay into verb makes a lot more sense.

You can achieve a similar tone with a Boss BD2 having the drive set lower. Otherwise, look for a clone of the Colorsound Overdriver/Power Booster which is what the Vick Audio is.

I come from years of fenders into 65 twin reverb and twin amp. The blues junior just doesn’t sound right for me. Ι just cannot get a nice deep clean fender tone. I should go back to the 65 twin or a bassman. Having said that, this is one of the best, if not the best video on BLues Junior out on RU-vid. Thanks for that.

I have a dedicated Blues jnr board :) ...yours sounds amazing...that DS-1, oh lordy! However, the OD-3 is my favourite overdrive into my Bjnr! I use an MXR FET Driver the way you use the Vick Overdriver. Goes to show - horses for courses, swings and roundabouts:)

@Jack Fossett Cheers. It's usually level: 1-2 o'clock, tone around 10-11 o'clock, gain around 2 o'clock. I'm usually playing humbuckers, Epiphone LP Studio or SG with P90 "buckers'-. Tone control and gain change based on how loud I can play.

Getting rid of my Blues Jr was a mistake I still regret. I made up for it with a FSR Bass breaker 15, but I still miss the Junior.

The blues junior is one of the most controversial amps out there, but the fact is it's everything it needs to be and nothing that it doesn't...my only gripe was the ruby tubes reverb tank, but I picked up an older accutronics tank with the proper in/out impedance and it gave the reverb knob a much more usable range

How new/old is the fender bassbreaker? Reason I ask …Had to sell my bjr3 awhile back for $$ issues …when I was back in the market shopping around I almost went with the bass breaker .. but while RU-vid surfing reviews etc a ton of negative videos came up ..was still loving the tones I saw and still considering g it till an amp repairman’s video..apparently they can’t be fixed at all if anything breaks ..if memory serves so,etching about the way the boards are built ..like can’t be taken apart at some point in trying to repair …and fender would just send new ones out and not take back broken ones ….this was awhile ago and maybe it’s a fixed issue at this point …? And maybe check ,do a lil research just for your own peace of mind (I might be mistaken 🤷🏼‍♂️)…..think that one repairman did say it was maybe a hit or miss issue also , meaning not everyone broke down

@@vicpnut1 I've heard some techs won't even look at the bassbreaker...the blues junior ain't that high in build quality either, honestly, but it's easier to fix...ultimately, they just don't build 'em like they used to, so if build quality is a big concern, go vintage

Great video man. My first and only amp is an Hot Rod Deville 2x12 from 2007 with an Bad Monkey going into the clean channel (no edge of breakup stuff). I never liked the monkeys midhump too much. Can you recommend me a inexpensive overdrive pedal for my amp?

JACK FOSSETT, Try to make a video lesson about using various overdrive pedals, distortion pedals that can get various CLEAN UP tones. The FAT Switch is suppose to only been used for guitar solo to add more midrange which you should make a video lesson on which boosters, overdrive pedals, distortion pedals will STACK well with the FAT switch. Fender amplifiers that have a normal channel and a tremolo channel is you have some effects on the tremolo channel to add reverb which is your WET channel and other effects for your normal channel which is your DRY channel. You don't want all your pedals getting reverb so you use the normal channel for certain effects. Try making a video lesson about doing this setup.

I have a DS-1 in my pedal board for my 96 Blues Jr. It is a Made in Japan pedal and I clipped the diodes. Gives it a totally different sound. Stack it with a Blues Driver, etc.. No pic of the entire pedal board... in a video about your pedal board...
