Thank you Kristian for this video! Last year, when watching a video from Ryan Benjamin, he said that for drawing the figure, starting with the torso is easier. At that moment, I became a member of the torso 1st gang. Like the head is the last thing that I place on the paper. I go torso, legs (based on how the pelvis is positioned, informs on the weight distribution) arms then head. Even with a reference, starting with the torso is more intuitive (for me), but for beginners having issues with proportions, try out placing the torso first!
What if, in my case, I draw and look at references to practice gestures? I have a lot of information, right? Should I still depict the figure with a torso, even though I'm not trying to draw from imagination? Thanks for your help.
It depends! There aren’t any hard rules on this stuff. When drawing from life, I usually start with the torso but sometime do the head if it makes sense. For example it would be easier to start with the head if the model’s head is overlapping most part of the body.
I'm sure this technique is good too. Michael Hampton always teaches to start from the head. When you're doing gesture drawings then you know where everything branches out from
