When I was 10 years old, i succeeded in closing my Barlow knife on my right forefinger, which bled quite satisfactorily and sent my mother into a gibbering panic. The scar is still visible 54 years later, so you know it was a really good cut. Perhaps it's just a coincidence, but I haven't had any interest in slipjoint knives since then.

Slipjoints still have some good qualities like for example as folding knife they are easy to clean. It might not be the knives fault you cut yourself. I am finnish with ton of experience with finnish style knives, and my worst cut happened with puukko when i was about 7. I just was whittling with it, and after i was done just thrusted it into the wood sheds beam, and my hand slipped along the blade since finnish knives dont have guard traditionally. I think it was completely user error, andnot the knife designs fault. I just mean that we should know our tools. There simply isnt nothing dangerous or bad about slipjoint just like there is nothing bad about fixblade without guard, and actually today when i am more experienced i prefer knives without guards to me guard just gets in the way as i am using the knife the way i am used to using it

I tried being a "switchblade guy" but i inevitably end up being a "my spring broke again and now my blade won't move from the 50% open position until I take it apart and replace the spring for the third consecutive month guy." True story. An XHP LUDT. I'll still buy a FS stitch when I can find one though, because I'm regarded.

I'd be a switchblade guy too if they weren't illegal where I am. As far as I know, they became status symbols for 'greasers' in the 50's here in the UK I believe... Think fonzy/john travolta look-a-likes.... thanks to those dumb asses, we have yet another restrictive law... so yeah, slip joints are better than nothing, and a nice one is better yet.

Great stuff Pete, thanks! I was hoping that it might be ‘not boring and dumb’ as I’ve struggled to see the point of slipjoints myself and have been considering this one. For me, it’s gotta have a clip or it just won’t get carried. You make an excellent point about the primary problem in slipjoint world - you can’t buy the damn things! Hard to get your hands on the big names at the best of times and harder still if you live in Australia. Seriously, WTF is up with that? If slips are so ‘just like grandpa carried’ do you reckon your grandpa would have put up with joining a bunch of fanbois and lining up for months to have a shot at buying a knife? No, he’d have just bought whatever was available at the store because grandpa didn’t have time for fanboi BS…

I know why you gravitate to Lion Steel knives - they look beautiful and are high quality (and you can actually buy one in Australia!). I have a couple of really nice wood handled slipjoints which I occasionally carry as gents knives but that's it. I wouldn't personally EDC or camp with a slipjoint - just too clumsy to open & close. There are some beautiful slipjoints out there so I do get why some choose to go down the slipjoint rabbit hole. Thanks Pete.

Since slipjoints are basically stupid finger traps that are always trying to hurt you the spyderco method of using a choil at the pivot to somewhat inhibit accidental closure seems to make sense if you like being able to count to ten. Once handed opening is a bonus too since, here in the UK at least, you will likely be using the thing for everything when out and about and sometimes your other hand is busy and whatnot.

Something I appreciate about the pocket clip on this knife is that its usage is optional. You could throw it in a slip or loose in the pocket like an ordinary slipjoint if you wanted, and have just as much a positive experience. One thing I don't like about the pocket clip is that it's not possible to change to a left handed configuration. Big downside for me, being left handed.

Your new model slip joint looks great for being a modern one. Knives always don’t need to flip open and shut to be interesting. They only need for someone to like them. Americans collect slip joint knives for the fun of it not because there the best and newest knives. The historic value is important as is the model types made. If you spend, time learning why one model is popular. You will learn the reason it is not that boring just harder to learn about and understand. Being where you live, your opportunities to buy them or collect them that other places have is hard for to do. What takes more thought to make, a knife with one blade or one that has many blades to make work and use. Why buy a single-blade folding knife that flips open and shut that is not as strong or faster to use, and durable as a fixed blade one? If you carry a pocketsize Butcher knife, it just does not work as well as smaller ones for eating an apple from underneath an apple tree or eating a tomato just off the vine from your garden. Boring old slip joint knives are only boring if you don’t know why people like using them. Just like people finding out old cast iron pans, are good cooking pans. ✨🦉✨

Hello again, just checking in. I bought the titanium version of the Thrill. The back spring went on mine. It broke at edge of one the machined points. I never everyday carried it, down to the expense, the pocket clip and being new so babying it. Only lasted 16 months of light use before failing. Am waiting to see what happens. The knife was £230 UK pounds... Barf. The knife is well made apart from that fatal flaw, I wouldn't advise picking it up. The blade is nice, but dangerous as if it closes it closes into your index finger, ask me how I know... So back to my Victorinox Climber and Spyderco UKPK, these knives everyday carry without any faults, and that's everyday for 9 and 5 years respectively. BTW no critisim to Pete here just a public service announcement against the Lionsteel Thrill.

Sorry Pete but you'll notice a difference between 58-59hrc and 62-63hrc m390. Tests showed anywhere from 50%-100% difference in edge retention between the two. A point or so in hardness won't make that much of a difference but 3-4 points you'll notice it.

I have the Ti version of the Thrill and I want to like it more than I do. It's hard to explain. I do find their M390 a bit soft comapred to other M390 knives, such as my Liong Mah Traveller. My Fox Knives Suru is really soft compared to either. I tend to just carry my Spyderco Urban and UKPK, as I can rely on them, and replace them more easily if needed. I live in the UK so slipjoints are my only real option.

It would cut better with a touch more belly. But I like the sleekness anyway. And I hate pocket clips. I never trust them, because I'm in and out of my pockets all the time. It's better if it sits fully inside my pocket where I can fish it out just fine. But the retractable clip is definitely pretty cool. It really should be ambidextrous, but I won't quibble about something I don't use. I wish it had a lock, though. 7/10

I’ve been eyeing either the Thrill or Best Man for quite a while. I’m surprised to see how big the Thrill actually is. For whatever reason I was convinced it was more compact, like a traditional slipjoint. Slipjoints definitely require a special mindset. It’s kind of like listening to music on a vinyl record in 2022. You have to *want* that kind of experience, because frankly there isn’t anything a slipjoint does better than all of the upgrades that came after them. I see them as filling a special role in my collection, though; I carry slipjoints that have non-threatening vibes, so that people don’t have to be so nervous if I’m using a knife around them unexpectedly. The slower, more deliberate opening and closing helps keep people at ease, and more traditional slipjoint designs give off less “tactical” vibes, plus their familiar design makes people feel less disconnected from them.

I gotten a few slipjoints from old school ones to modern and none have really gotten much pocket time after the thrill of a new knife wore off. Then I got a Cultrotech Slim and everything changed. About a 4 inch, 2mm stock of Elmax blade at 65hrc with great finish and the best edge I've ever seen on a knife, crazy fiber scales over aluminum frame weighting at about 2.5 oz. It cuts like nothing else(though I was expecting 0.1-0.2mm like the description said but its closer to 0.35mm which is still good but could be better), it's light and slim and fit and finish are top notch. Its the only slip joint I'll need and really its the only knife I'd really need but I still enjoy many others so I can't be a one knife guy.

I was fully planning to buy this knife. I went to my local shop and got to handle it and changed my mind. I like the design, the materials, and the walk and talk. The clip is clever, but on a knife this small I just couldn't reliably put it in my pocket without dropping it or the clip not being open enough. If the ROK was sold in a slip joint form with a sheepsfoot blade I think I would pull the trigger on that one.

Slipjoints are the only legal thing to carry in many places. I'm in Canada and people freak out a bit less around a small slipjoint than they do around some tactical-looking flipper.

Pretty sweet looking knife. Haven't bought a slipjoint since I lost my favorite knife, a CF benchmade proper. Maybe a clip would've helped me not do that.

When I saw the new Pena Apache slipjoint I immediately thought of you cause it’s in k390. Definitely one to look into imo. Thanks for the vid Pete!

Stylish, yet practical. And I do like the pocket clip (I don't use clips much, and they do get in the way). This would probably do very nicely for all my regular tasks.
