Another reason I've found to stop the endless search for these "holy grail" items is that nearly every time I've felt I found one it's been eventually discontinued. That's a whole lot more crushing when I know I've spent so much time and money seeking out products and viewing them as the "solution" to a problem (which usually wasn't as big as I thought in the first place!) I like the idea of staple items so much more because it considers affordability and doesn't have this unrealistic glorification associated with it. Just the idea that the product is somehow "enough" and worthy of using to completion, regardless of ads promising something "better". Which usually isn't actually better, anyway.

this is actually a fabulous point. You can spend so much time and energy into searching for that holy grail the 'loss' when it's discontinued can be huge. Or at least feel that way. I didn't have that perspective in mind when making this video so I'm so glad you shared it!

This happens every time I find a foundation I like that actually has a shade match for me. I've had to get comfortable with using foundation mixers and combining shades cause every "pale" shade is straight white, really orange, or really yellow.

You're so right - when I deviate from my staples is when I start spending on stupid stuff. It's good to stay a litte bit "boring" to yourself or else suddenly you are frittering money away 😛

I loved this so much. A favorite vs. a staple. I have one long term staple-my perfume that I buy once a year. It’s the same one for 23 years! I have a huge and insane eye shadow and blush collection. I need to find staples in eye shadow. At least a brand. I think I’m doing that slowly. I love the idea later on (once I find my staple amongst my pile) of shopping for fun vs. a staple. I am now realizing while I like looking at rainbow palettes or certain pastel color stories, I don’t really wear them so why do I want to buy them? It’s the rush of the acquisition! Doing my no buys (and your videos)has helped temper my need to buy every new shimmer and pretty palette even though I would just put it away. I love the idea of shopping with intentionality! In the last few months I noticed my foundation amount was getting a little wild but I stopped myself getting more when I realized I already have one that I adore. So I have deleted my carts with new ones. I have heard Cerave is great. My staple moisturizer is Korean one- IPSA 2. It is my all time fave! It doesn’t leave my skin greasy and it not too matte. It’s also good for sensitivity. I still really enjoy watching makeup RU-vid reviews because I like the creators, but I am realizing I can just enjoy looking at the pretty eye shadow and not buy it. I am so happy that I have not gone wild this Black Friday! I’m a Carmex girl myself 😅 I am trying to find a mascara staple now. I have a container full 😬 This was a great video, thank you❤saving it!

Carmex was the other lip balm I was thinking of but couldn't remember the name 😅 thank you for sharing all your thoughts!

Staples for the win! I use and repurchase a few things all the time, in particular the Ordinary squalane cleanser, LRP cicaplast levres (see-kah... that's how I pronounce it 😂) and Aquaphor soothing skin balm. Having staples definitely reduces stress/shopping behaviour until there's something being discontinued or reformulated. When my staple lip liner was discontinued I bought 10 backups.. but at 1$ each I felt that decision bought me time and calm to find my next staple. My favourite things go on the wishlist and I might treat myself to a lipstick or gloss for my birthday.

your pronunciation makes sense now that I've seen it! I could only hear that one way in my head and I couldn't get to anything else 😅 I used to be anti-backup but there are so many cases where buying backups make sense and reducing stress/finding time for a future staple makes sense. Thanks for sharing!

I also haven't bought anything but the L'oreal Sky High since I first tried it a couple years ago! Total staple for me. Cerave's daily facial cleanser for normal/oily skin, Alien by Theirry Mugler perfume, and Milani baked blush in Luminoso are three products I've been using and replacing religiously since I was in college 10 years ago. They never fail me.

I LOVED hearing your staples. I tried a perfume that's supposed to be similar to Alien recently and it's SO GOOD.

Yes!! I’ve started to find my staples. Staple skincare: Proven Cosmetics face cleanser and night cream. Charlotte TilburyMagic Cream and Merit Great Skin for day. Believe it or not, I have a staple toothbrush: Moon (I hate that it’s from a Kardashian) toothbrushes. The bristles are so soft, which I love. Makeup remover and toner: Bioderma Foot cream: L’Occitane Cuticle oil: L’Occitane Shampoo/conditioner/shave bar: Kitsch I even have some household staples (Milt St detergent powder, Fillaree Clean Dream spray cleaner)

Interesting video as usual, Shawna! I find that having staples also saves me from having to expend excess mental energy trying to figure out what to buy next. My main skincare staples are Pond's Fragrance Free Cold Cream Make-Up Remover, Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream, Differin Gel (retinoid), IS Clinical SPF 50 (mineral sunscreen), Lush Shampoo Bar, and Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant. I rotate brands for nearly everything else I use (toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, body lotion, conditioner, mascara, lip balm) so I still get the hunter/gatherer thrill of finding and trying some new things, but only after I've finished what I have to try to stave off excessive consumption and waste.

Mascara - Maybelline The Rocket Volum' Express I'm a balm, butter, mask lippie kinda gal. Sigma's is the most expensive but it last a long time and I will repurchase it when the time comes. Tree Huts lip butter and Juvias Place's balm are very good and nice to keep in my purse or leave in the car. Lip Butter - Tree Hut Lip Balm - Juvias Place The Nubian Glow Balm Lip Mask - Juvia's Plac le Hydro Melt Lip Mask Eyeshadow I've been thinking about eyeshadow palette staples for a while. Like, if I had to repurchase everything and keep my collection at 5-10 palettes, what would I truly be satisfied owning. And what brands actually keep palettes around long enough for them to be staples? I do a smell check on my palettes a couple times a year and palettes seem to start smelling funky after about 2 years in my experience. Dose of Colors Marvelous Mauves DOC's 5 pans are fantasic. I have repurchased their palettes and I will repurchase Marvelous Mauves for a 3rd time at some point in the next year. I've used it to expiration twice. The only thing holding me back now is that I have 15 palettes. When what I have starts to go off though, Marvelous Mauves will be on my list to buy again. I might even just go for it sooner. Flower Beauty Desert Lights These metallics are to die for. Wild and Amazon make this 6 pan a staple for me. I think I could happily pan those 2 shimmers. Sigma and Sydney Grace shadows in general. I like that Sigma doesn't discontinue palettes frequently. I could see myself repurchasing the 4 9 pan palettes I own when they expire. Electric Pink, Fiery, Beachy and Earthy are the 4 I own and love. I finally tried Sydney Grace this summer and bought Heaven on Earth and Tropicolor. I think I could be satisfied with just those 2 palettes in my collection for a year or 2.

I also love to start with the cheapest when it’s an entire category or type of product i want to try but I’m not sure about. I don’t wear eyeliner but have been so tempted to get several colors of the Victoria Beckham at like $30+ each. I bought one elf liner for $4, and now know that I still don’t love eyeliner on me. Problem solved.

As I was writing out a list of my staples I realized they're not actually my staples, I'm just working through the massive amounts of them I bought unnecessarily like 3 years ago (deodorant, body wash) 😂 can't wait until I'm done and I can use something else maybe?? Dare I?? My only true staple is my toothpaste and the HA + B5 serum from the ordinary, although i have found other brands that make it at places like winners so I am not beholden to the brand for that :)

The Laniege balm is way too overhyped and way too expensive. My $3 chapstick from Target works better. People love it Just because it smells good and comes in a cute container.
