This is the music that our generation grew up with. How lucky were we! No crap music, no auto tune, just brilliant musicians at the top of their game!!
Hate to break it to you but for those of us who grew up in the 70's and 80's, this was just one of our average everyday songs. Man were we spoiled or what.
The guy with mustache singing in the higher soulful voice is Bobby Kimball. He is from my hometown of Vinton, Louisiana and is a family friend. Check out " Hold The Line " Bobby sings lead on that one.
The Rosanna Shuffle is the hill so many drummers die on. So hard to play smooth as Jeff did it - I certainly can't and I have been playing for a long time. I mean I can play it but I can't PLAY it if you know what I mean.
The dancer is Cynthia Rhodes who played Penny in Dirty Dancing. Patrick Swayze is the dancer in the red jacket. He takes the jacket off toward the end of the video and has on a gray muscle shirt. You can see his face at about 4:25 in the official video.
Jeff Porcaro on drums one of the best ever, Steve Lukather on guitar one of the greatest, Bobby Kimball on vocals, David Paich on keys, Steve Porcaro on keyboards, sprinkled with Chicago's Pankow, Tom Scott on sax etc.
It was a joke. "The song was written by David Paich, who has said that the song is based on numerous girls he had known. As a joke, the band members initially played along with the common assumption that the song was based on Rosanna Arquette, who was dating Toto keyboard player Steve Porcaro at the time. Arquette herself played along with the joke, commenting in an interview that the song was about "my showing up at 4 a.m., bringing them juice and beer at their sessions"
The blond dancer in the red dress, Cynthia Rhodes, went on to marry singer Richard Marx. You should check out some of his music like "Endless Summer Nights" or "Right Here Waiting For You".
This song and “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel are written about the same person - actress Rosanna Arquette who dated both Gabriel and Toto keyboardist Steve Pocaro at different times
Along with Peter Gabriel's IN YOUR EYES, (after dating her briefly) this song is also written about the singer's love interest, ROSSANNA ARQUETE (Brother David was in the SCREAM MOVIES, her sister,Patricia, the star of NBC's MEDIUM). This made her the 2nd most written about woman in rock history with Eric Clapton/George Harrison's ex wife, Patti Boyd (having nearly 10 songs written about her) being the first.
A little fact people don't know, that ending was never rehearsed. It was only supposed to end with Rosanna, but David Paich (Keyboardist) and Jeff Porcaro (Drummer) improvised the ending part and the band just kept going, in an interview with Steve Lukather (Guitarist) from 2022 from Sunset sound he mentioned that and said, "You don't stop until the band stops". Also its worth mentioning the bassist who played on this record isn't the same guy in the music video, David Hungate was their original bassist but left in 1982 which was then replaced with Mike Porcaro who unfortunately passed away from ALS 9 years ago following the death of his brother Jeff Porcaro back in 1992, David Hungate would return however for Toto XIV in 2015 but would only tour with them from when the album released that same year, they've had other bassists since Mike's unfortunate diagnosis it 2007, other bassists including the Legend Leland Sklar, Nathen East, David Hungate for Toto XIV, Shem von Schroeck, and their latest and current bassist John Pierce.
Two amazing driving songs that summer - "Rosanna" and "Don’t You Want Me." My parents had just bought a car with an awesome stereo and I just got my license. Love the long version, especially. (An aside - the woman dancing in the video is Cynthia Rhodes, most famous for playing Penny in Dirty Dancing.)
Great Classic! I was in junior high when this was released (8th grade). I have always said that this song was like three different songs in one. Love it!
You’ve known toto, even if you don’t know them.. each member was a legendary studio musician. together they played on more then 5000 albums of other bands/singers etc… since early/mid 70’s..
We had the best music, the best parties, the best stereos, and the best fun of any generation. We would all have our car windows down and play these wonderful songs as loud as we could stand. We would sing along - we knew all the words. YOU MUST give "Hold The Line" a listen. You'll be spellbound.
It's always fun and it kind of blows my mind to see the guys with Toto again and the reactions/comments about them. With Toto you have some of the most crack musicians of their era. These guys have played on albums that have sold hundreds of millions of albums including Steely Dan, Springstein and Boz Scaggs. Tom Scott also plays horns on this track, he arranged the horns and plays on SD's Aja album. I guess I'm kind of bias, I went to HS with the guys in LA, Jeff, Mike, Steve Porcaro, Lukather and Paich, it was a wild and musical time be be in HS to say the least! Tom Scott also went to my HS along with drummer Jim Gordon and Kevin Dubrow of Quiet Riot, I didn't like him much. It's still all very strange. En Toto=In Total, all genres of music. These memories make it a great time to still be alive!
@helenespaulding7562 My high school has a Wikipedia page, U.S. Grant High School. I forgot to mention Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees and the guitarist Michael Landau, too. I saw Tom Scott in Nov. and he said it was the water too, perhaps, like I told him, I always thought it was the drugs. Cheers!
Thanks my friend!!! You have found gold itself, Toto is the biggest, the best; David Paich on piano; Steve Lukather, on guitar; Jeff Porcaro on drums (he died very young and in a ridiculous accident, he was a genius); Bobby Kimball, on vocals; Mike Porcaro on bass (in this video although I think the album was recorded by David Hungate) and Steve Porcaro on keyboards (although he was not a permanent member of the band); excellence 100% Other songs: Africa, Till the end, Pamela, Hydra, Child Anthem, 99, well, it would be naming almost their entire discography, which is incredible. Hug from Argentina
This song was written for Roseanna Arquette. One of the band members was absolutely in love iwth her. The blonde dancer in the video is Cynthia Rhodes ... she played Penny in Dirty Dancing and ex wife of Richard Marx. Toto's biggest hit is " Africa ". Amazing song. 80's still rocks baby 🤘🤘🤘❤❤❤
Just a little information about Toto. Several of the members were very in demand studio musicians. There is a very famous '70s singer named Boz Scaggs, and his hit album in the mid '70s called Silk Degrees has several of Toto's members as the studio band. Boz actually suggested to them that they should start their own band and shortly after that Toto existed. The woman who was dancing in the video is Cynthia Rhodes. She is a triple threat dancer, singer, and actress. She was famously in Dirty Dancing as Patrick swayze's friend who was pregnant. She was also in another famous video by Richard Marx, who she later married, called "Don't mean nothing". But my favorite thing that she did was she was in part two of Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta, a movie called "Staying Alive". You have to listen to her song "finding out the hard way" from the soundtrack of the movie. She has a beautiful voice. Back to Toto, please do "hold the line". If you liked Bobby Kimball's voice in Rosanna, you're going to love his lead vocals on "hold the line". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TzI_UfrE-2U.htmlsi=iBL9CE3Wcn8xqZNw
If you have decent car speakers this is the BEST song when you’re stuck in traffic. You can break out the air guitar and drums. Chair-dance and use your water bottle mic for your lead vocals. I literally gathered my children and introduced them to the greatness of this song.
Who's this band you ask? Only a group of musicians that played on countless tunes throughout the 70s and 80s, and yes you've heard all those tracks. Does the album Thriller ring a bell?
This is why studio musicians are the best at what they do. Glen Campbell was one hell of a studio musician before he went solo. I do recommend watching them live because you'll get one hell of a show with some great musicians.
Just saw them two weeks ago. Still so damn good. Steve Lukather is a guitar god. One of the most utilized session musicians of the decade. He did the guitar for Michael Jackson's Beat It (except Eddie's solo).
Nearly all the dudes in Toto went to my rival high school. I went to Jeff Porcaro's house when I was a kid to listen to him bang the skins as I was often swimming at the neighbors house. I told him Peter Criss was better! 😂😂😂 RIP Jeff. ❤
Rosanna: played by Cynthia Rhodes; Dirty Dancing, Flashdance, Staying Alive as well as other music videos like The BeeGees and Richard Marx (spouse). She was a hell of a dancer. 💃
The Porcaro brothers were instrumental in the creation of Thriller by Michael Jackson. Steve wrote Human Nature and played synthesizers for several songs on the album, while his brother Jeff played the drums for several songs. I love Toto! They have such great songs and arrangements! LJ
TOTO is a band that has many sounds. My favorite song by them is "I won't hold you back" 😊 I had tickets to their concert last year, and it got cancelled due to a band member being sick. I was so bummed out 😭 hope they come back so i can finally see them live
It was written by David Paich based on girls he knew. He used the name Rosanna who was dating Steve Porcaro but the song was not written for her or about her.
@@EC-dz3fb In the early days everyone assumed it was about Rosanna Arquette and the band went along with it as a joke. Maybe that's why she said she hated it. Idk
Glad to see this song and band blew you away, as it should 😊. Now, before you let too much time pass with other songs and artists reactions, I would highly recommend you react to Toto’s first single which broke them to mainstream pop success and that song is “Hold The Line” which for me is part of what I refer to as Toto’s musical holy Trinity of Toto songs the Holy Trinity which along with the aforementioned “Hold The Line” includes this rock-groove masterpiece “Rosanna” and of course “Africa”. Really looking forward to seeing you experiencing and reacting to “Hold The Line”
Although it is Dave Hungate playing bass on the audio, the bass player appearing in the video is Mike Pocaro, brother of drummer Jeff Pocaro & keyboardist Steve Pocaro. He replaced Hungate after they recorded this album.
This has been one of my favorite bands through the 70's & 80's and their still going strong. I heard that the members of TOTO have performed on over 500 grammy nominated ablums
I was 32 when Rosannna was popular. So great to hear it after not hearing it for ahwile. Even better than I even remember ! Love the "20 years since she went away" harmony. Thanks for Reacting to it.
The bass player that is in the video is actually Mike Porcaro (Jeff the drummer and Steve the keyboardist’s brother), he didn’t play it on the studio recording of Rosanna, that was Mike Hungate. This is also the last album that Bobby Kimball (the vocalist you were checking on) was on.
When this song was being recorded, everything after 8:46 here was improvised when David Paich just continued playing and the rest joined in. At the end of Steve's final guitar solo, the band looked into the studio control booth and someone said, "I hope you got that". The Bassist in the video is Mike Pocaro (RIP) as David Hungate had left the band and moved to Nashville.
