Eddie Van Halen said that that TOTO is the most technically proficient band there's ever been. Everyone of them are great studio musicians that have played on hundreds of famous songs. And lead by humble guitar virtuoso, singer, songwriter, and nice guy Steve Lukather.
@@veralterung5627 Well David Paich and specially and most notably Jeff Porcaro worked with Steely Dan. Current Steely Dan drummer Keith Carlock was also a drummer with Toto in 2015
When Bobby Kimball starts singing, I get chills, he's so smooth and has an awesome, clean vocal range! Not too many people know, The members of Toto, started out as studio musicians: Toto Was The Studio Band For Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, and Michael Jackson.
David Lee Roth said they were the best freeze dried band ever. Said that's not bad. It's just that nobody can ever recognize the guys in person unless they're onstage as a group. He said that's a good way to be famous
That's one thing that we had in our music back in the day is that you didn't know what you were going to get, it made you listen to the hole song. Great music.
The drums in this song are famous amongst percussionists. the "Rosanna Shuffle" is recognized as one of the more difficult and coolest beats in rock/pop.
@@churthebol8054 Technically it's not. Porcaro himself said that the Rosanna halftime shuffle was a mix of the Purdy shuffle and a few other artists, with his own spin on it. They're all halftime shuffles with different variants on where certain drums are placed within the rhythm.
@@cinnamonrollypoly John Bonham's Fool In The Rain shuffle, derived from the Purdie shuffle, plus Bo Diddley's bass drum beat help create the Rosanna half time shuffle. Jeff breaks down the segments of the shuffle on a video found on RU-vid.
No one seems to have mentioned that the title of this song, Rosanna, was literally about the well-known actress Rosanna Arquette, who the keyboardist Steve Porcaro was dating at the time, Porcaro didn’t write the song lyrics, Toto lead David Paich wrote them, because Porcaro wanted a song about her! Such a cool band, oozing with talent!!
@@robertgreen6433 The woman in the video is Cynthia Rhodes, who was in the movie "Dirty Dancing". Patrick Swayze himself is in the video, however. He's the guy in the red letter jacket, who takes his jacket off and goes face to face with one of the other dancers.
@GloryCarrier22: David Paich has said that the song was about one of his first high school loves, and he's also said that it was about "three girls I knew, all rolled into one." He used the name Rosanna, which happened to belong to the girl who "was going at the time with Steve Porcaro, my best friend", because it "just fit perfectly." After he met Arquette, he said, "I just stole her name and stuck it on there.” At that time, in 1982, Arquette wasn't a well-known actress. The band members have at times in the past expressed some irritation that Arquette claimed the song was about her. Bobby Kimball said, “It was just an opportune moment for her to grab the brass ring and run with it. She was just starting her career, and the song was so big that she went on several talk shows and said it was about her. But I can tell you that it wasn’t. David’s line was always that he just used the name because it fitted into the song. Then she came into the picture and claimed it.”
Guitarist Steve Lukather did a "zero take solo" on the song "Running With the Night" by Lionel Richie. In a nutshel, Lukather was playing along with the song to get a feel for it. Unknowingly, the record producer already hit the record button. At the end of the segment where the solo point was over, the producer stopped rolling. Lukather said to the producer "I think I'm ready." The producer replied "That was the take." Pure spontaneous beauty!
It has its own name, obviously I guess "The Roseanna Shuffle." Big test for even really good drummers. Bohham of Zep had a shuffle that many drummers worked on, adapted.
Jeff Porcaro, RIP, created this groove. In fact, Porcaro pretty much was the foundation of the 80s sound. He played with so many popular groups then. He is missed.
Toto was the house band, if you will, for the entire Thriller album! They are all amazing! They are musicians, musicians! Saw them live 3 times! They never disappoint!
@@tim1843 Toto members only wrote one song on Thriller and that was Human Nature which was written by Steve Porcaro. Luke plays on Thriller, Human Nature and The Girl is Mine
When Bobby Kimball starts singing, I get chills, he's so smooth and has an awesome, clean vocal range! Not too many people know, The members of Toto, started out as studio musicians: Toto Was The Studio Band For Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, and Michael Jackson.
Legendary drummer Jeff Porcaro with one of the greatest shuffle grooves in recorded history. He makes it sound easy, but this groove is so complex. There's a solo drums version available here on RU-vid. So many ghost notes in his playing. RIP
Absolutely legendary, appears as a session player on so many other great songs too, "Mother" by Pink Floyd, Springsteen's "Human Touch", obviously so many more. Massive loss to the whole music community with his passing. Have been learning what I can myself from some of the old instructional videos he recorded that are available on RU-vid.
I once told my drum teacher that i thought this song was hard to play. His reply "you think it's hard?! I think it's impossible congrats you're a better drummer than me"! Can't get enough of this song!
Dude, I even found a video of RU-vid vid of Jeff Porcaro explaining how he Frankensteined that beat from LedZep, Bernard Purdie, and the Bo Diddley shuffle. He explained so simply and perfectly.....and I still can't play this shit lol. That man was just born to sit behind a drum kit, such a great piece of music.
While the Rosanna Halftime shuffle is great, it's actually not that hard to play once you get the muscle memory of the rhythm. If I can play it after two months of practice, then most people can probably do it if they put their heads to it in far less time.
It makes me so happy to see young people listen to these bands of my youth and find what I found in their timeless artistry. Good music can stand the test of time. I am literally reliving the emotions I had when I was young through you two. Thank You.
My mother in law's name was Rosana. She's no longer with us so we played this on Saturday at our wedding reception as a tribute to her. Toto is so dope. Why are they not in the RNF HOF?
Saw these guys live in 1989. They had all their instruments turned toward the audience so we could see everything they were playing. Absolutely all the keyboard parts were played live, no sequencers, even on tunes like 'Africa'. To this day, it remains the most amazing performance I've seen.
Toto was the pinnacle of music back in the 80's - so versatile & creative because of incredible skills/technique. They're played on everything from rock, R&B, funk, to global, smooth jazz, & adult contemporary stations - nobody else has done this in music history at the level Toto has - absolute legends!
No one ever mentions one of the lead singers with the soulful voice. That's Bobby Kimball and he is a close family friend from my hometown of Vinton, Louisiana. His mother babysat me and he dated my oldest sister. Bobby is the one with the mustache. Great reaction 😁
FYI The dancer in red is Cynthia Rhodes. She was also Penny in Dirty Dancing and Tina in Flashdance, and is FANTASTIC! Thanks for another great reaction! Cheers!
The song was written by David Paich, who has said that the song is based on numerous girls he had known. As a joke, the band members initially played along with the common assumption that the song was based on Rosanna Arquette, who was dating Toto keyboard player Steve Porcaro at the time and coincidentally had the same name. Arquette herself played along with the joke, commenting in an interview that the song was about "my showing up at 4 a.m., bringing them juice and beer at their sessions."
I met Toto in 1979. Hung out for several hours back stage at the California World Music Festival ... L.A. Colosseum. One of the most talented bands EVER. Steve and Bobby share vocals on this tune. Steve's guitar work is phenomenal on every song he does.
So cool to get to meet them! I met Boston in the early 70's. I was think 9 0r 10. They were signing autographs a Peaches Record store near my house. I knew sort of who they were. It was quite a few years later that I was aware how awesome it was to be able to meet them. I also got all their autographs, but my brother stole them. Jerk.
The most underrated bands ever. They are all musical geniuses and played on the best of the best studio albums across a 20 year span. The go to musicians for other musicians. They wrote songs for other bands. The keyboardist (1 of 3 Porcaro brothers in the band) wrote Human Nature for Michael Jackson and many more number ones for other artists, i love Toto thanks for sharing! ❤️
the musicians in this band played on pretty much every song and album in the mid 70s til the end of the 80s. that guitar player is all over thriller, the keyboard player wrote human nature, the drummer is probably on over 1000 records
They are true professionals. A collection of studio artists, "Hired guns", that said "Hey...we can do this ourselves We don't have to let some given star put their name on our work". Real pros long before they became a group.
"Rosanna" is portrayed by Cynthia Rhodes, who also had roles in movies Staying Alive, Flashdance, Runaway, and Dirty Dancing. The guy in the red letterman jacket also just happened to be in Dirty Dancing, Roadhouse, Red Dawn (1984), Next of Kin and Ghost.
Oh, I forgot to mention, the female dancer is Cynthia Rhodes, Richard Marx's ex-wife, who played Penny in "Dirty Dancing", and was the lead singer of the second incarnation of the band Animotion. And the background dancer who looks like Patrick Swayze? Yeah, that's really him.
My cousin introduced this song to me on a road trip in the summer of 1982 - he was in college, I was in the sixth grade. He passed away this past Saturday. Rest In Peace, Shane, and thank you for being awesome.
That's why I love this band guys, because they are so versatile. Their songs extend from rock, heavier rock, prog, to R&B, funk, soul, jazz, pop, beautiful balads, and they even have some songs with some reggae flavours. They can do everything!
What's funny is, most of the time when you're watching reactions for songs that you are just, like, wanting to hear what people have to say because you've known it your whole life or whatever, you don't really think about it the way someone reacting to it for the first time thinks about it. So sometimes I kind of get educated. I feel like I've grown up with Toto my whole life and I just kind of took it for granted, like I guess I take a lot of really great music for granted, and I never really thought about how eclectic this song is, and how many changes it has in it, and how many different things it incorporates, but now I have a new appreciation for what I just thought of as a Toto song like many others, because you guys brought that information forward in my head I guess. It's probably because they were all session musicians and come from so many different walks of life/schools of music, but yeah again I just never really considered it until y'all brought it up; so thank you for that! I'll not take it for granted anymore.
The Rosanna drum groove and fills are done with so much feel and so deep in the pocket that while many attempt to play these drum parts, few master them.
The thing for me that always set this song apart as a classic is the very subtle, almost unnoticeable slap-bass in the chorus. Every single change and flair in the song is phenomenal but that slap-bass is almost hidden in the background but does so much to accent the chorus into the classic sound that Rosanna has.
Rumor has it, the song is about actress Rosanna Arquette, whom one of the band members was dating at the time. Toto still has some more gems too..."Georgy Porgy" (with Cheryl Lynn, who sings "To Be Real," an iconic banger you might check out too), "I'll Supply the Love" (followed "Hold the Line"), and "99" (followed "Rosanna")
They have a hell of lot more ballads, but yeah... those are my favorites too, and adding to those "I Will Remember" from the Tambu album too, which it always make tear up because Luke wrote it for Jeff. Also David Paich is one of my role models on the piano/keys...
As many have mentioned, some of the best musicians in the biz. Drummer Jeff Porcaro (RIP) was known the 'man with the golden groove'. All of my drummer buddies loved him and as a guitar player Toto's Steve Lukather has always been one of my favorites. I attended a music college in Boston in the 90's, full of mostly snobby jazz players. When TOTO came to town they all went to see them. Rock wasn't normally their thing but ....respect! I've seen them several times since then, always a great show.
The members of Toto were some of the best studio musicians at the time. They decided to form their own band. Btw, the horn players are the guys from Chicago.
"I Won't Hold You Back Now" (Live) is my fave off of that album Toto IV. Great haunting lead guitar and piano. It's a power ballad sung by lead guitarist Steve Lukather. They have 3 lead singers btw. One of the top bands of the 80s!
Toto sounds so awesome and does such widely diverse types of sounds because they are a group of studio musicians that got together to do their own music, so you've definitely heard them on some of your most favorite songs. They definitely have the background required to make songs that sound so good. Some other songs by them that you would like are 99, I'll Be Over You, I Won't Hold You Back, Pamela (my favorite) and Stop Loving You.
Toto was a great band with great musicians! A great introduction to this genre. You are now ready for some Steely Dan! The kings of this genre! Check out the songs Black Cow, Hey Nineteen, Don't Take Me Alive, Kid Charlemagne, Do It Again, Haitian Divorce, The Caves Of Altimira, Aja, Home At Last, Green Earrings, Deacon Blues, and soooooo many more! This is one of the greatest groups with a who's who of the greatest all star musicians to ever do it! Jump on the train and you'll forever be a fan! 💯
Actually, even though I love Steely Dan. The true forefathers are the group Traffic. The album Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Is one of my favorite albums. The instrumentals and a young Steve Windoow. Classic.
thank you very much guys for react on Toto this is just one of the gifted groups from late 70S and grew up stronger and became a legendary group with their iconic songs I'm strongly suggest 99 it's also a mega hit
One of my favorites from Toto is Pamela. Georgie Porgy is another one, but there isn't a bad Toto song in my opinion. I have seen them live a few times in the last 15 years or so and it is always so fun.
The members were pretty much all studio musicians, who have to be good to be able to walk into a studio and play what's required. They got together and formed this band.
Toto's hit got it's name from actress Rosanna Arquette, who was dating keyboardist Steve Porcaro at the time. "Rosanna" was written by band leader David Paich, who was always looking for good ideas for lyrics
That song always makes me smile, because in the UK a '99' is a tasty soft-serve ice cream cone with a little chocolate bar in it. And no one knows why it's called a 99, it just is! 😄
Speaking about the musicianship of the band members, I listened to an interview with Steve Lukather and David Paich and they were asked about the band's rehearsal habits. They said they never really rehearsed. They would just go into the studio and play and that except for the horns, which were added later, that the recorded version of Rosanna was the second take of the song and the instrumental section after the lyrics end was just them jamming spontaneously at the end of the song.
Toto musicians were one of the best in the 70/80, but very underrated. Drummer Jeff Porcaro was one of the best drummer of that aera. He was a session musician and played with many many big names.
I feel like Toto is a very underrated band I feel like they deserve more props than what they get! Their song Georgie Porgie is everything and one of my favorite songs ever!
I love your reactions, guys!! Does a heart good to see how much your enjoying these classic groups from our era. I promise you: Toto’s ‘I Won’t Hold You Back’ is incredible, and it’ll always stick with you. 💜
LOVE how you guys made the comparison/similarity between Toto & Chicago in terms of transitions and theatrical eclectic music. It warms my heart that you guys are appreciating the music from my generation. We really did have so much great music. Thank you for sharing this music with your wonderful observations. ❤❤
This song was about two girls named Rosanna, one of whom was actress Rosanna Arquette. She also inspired the Peter Gabriels' song In Your Eyes. She did a lot of indie films. The best known is probably Desperately Seeking Susan, co-starring Madonna who was at the very beginning of her career.
