This Sonic 3 Trick Broke Speedrunning 

"Generates a bunch of junk" That's a chunk of leftover code from Competition Mode attempting to loop the level over by recreating the layout again, only it doesn't execute correctly in single player.

I remember seeing this glitch be documented by ORKAL's video series "Sonic 3 and Knuckles Glitches and Oversights" from over 10 years ago. I remember wondering what would happen if you could reach the capsule after beating the boss in his Marble Garden video, and 10 years later I finally get to see what happens.

It's insane how so many specific rules of the game cooperate for this to be possible. I almost think this was a puzzle the programmers put in.

Though I know not much about Sonic Speedrunning, this is quite the well-made video showcasing something that culminates much of Genesis Sonic speedrunning's characteristic tricks all into one nice skip!

I find it funny how as a child I discovered the core mechanics exploited by speed runners but it never occurred to me to even try to put them to practice. Even with the boss explained in this video, I stumbled on it occasionally when playing with debug and I would never have thought it'd be possible to beat without debug, let alone used as a key part of someone's playthrough. The creativity in understanding the mechanics in such useful and efficient ways still amazes me. The most intentional exploiting I ever did was getting by collision using Super/Hyper forms and just trying to move too fast for the camera!

I found your channel today, you're not the only type of channel I've seen do these kinds of videos, but you do a stellar job. I love the emphasis you put on tips/tricks to the speedrun, really helps put how important things are into perspective. Beautifully done!

Actually starting on Marble garden the series of glitches used are both interesting and difficult, once you successfully pull off MG2 skip, you have CN1/2 with wheel glitch, which is also a very interesting glitch, the hard part tho is carrying wheel glitch into act 2 for even more shenanigans when you can't jump on perhaps one of the worst bosses you could impose such a restriction on and use it to fall over the top of act 2 by glithcing into a corner where a fail means you are stuck, then Ice Cap 2 abuses slope glitch to fall to the end of act 1 which can go horribly wrong if spikes or crushers get you and have to then set up to skip act2 and it's boss before you are faced with the complex movements to lure a flying robot to knock you into one of the special elements in the stage to reach Knuckles boss with rings so you can set up the LB2 skip by resetting the the floor to allow Sonic or Tails to survive the act 1 transition so the second boss can be defeated to trigger the transition to Mushroom hill, these are probably amoungst the most difficult tricks in the game and Mushroom Hill and Flying battery aren't much better at this point, at least you get a break with Sandopolis 1 before having to deal with 2 and Lava Reef.

After an entire childhood of playing 90s Sonic games, I am just starting to watch speedrunning explanation videos. Other channel hosts have insinuated "there's no Sonic speedrunners because the levels are no fun". Which can't be all true. I'm beginning to think Sonic speedrunning is broken for entirely different reasons.

I don't know. I find glitches fascinating but exploiting them for speed runs seems about as legit as just doing a level select speedrun.

These tricks arent true speedrunning though, this is cheating lol. Real speedruns are clear playthroughs of the game with no exploits, skipaheads, or glitches. Pure gamers would never count these type of things as legitimate runs. Play through the same as it was designed or get outta here is what I say to those peeps.
