This Sword is Beastly! (Two-Handed Katzbalger?)

Have you ever wondered what a two-handed Katzbalger would be like? There are some depictions of Landsknecht mercenaries with a Zweihander that is basically that, with "pretzel" quillons and a similar pommel shape.
Lancelot Chan created a design just like that, in the form of the "Red Baron" German battle sword. He sent me one along with cutting material, so this is my first impression and test. Yes, it will cut... and keel. :)
lancelotsword....
I also compared it to other swords to see how well each performs on these targets (which are more challenging to cut than tatami mats):
"Shirasaya" (really more a Shikomizue) katana

Thats why a tatami mat shouls be accompanied with a green bamboo core to get more realism out of them. Not saying it is a perfect equivalent or we do not have anything better these days, but it is traditional and with a thick bamboo core quite hard to cut.

Great work here Skall! That’s some nice cutting, and a good showcase about what these Lancelot targets are like. Quite a bit tricker than standard tatami. I had to laugh at you going through the PEX (I’ve been using PEX in the absence of PPR for my home made newspaper targets) as I’ve also cut too low on some of these Lancelot targets! I needed to have your foresight about using a softer cutting stand though… Great work with that big Baron!

What I noticed about the Shmashir is that, despite being an effective cutter against other mediums, it had a tendency to slide when it faced resistance on the pipe because of the extreme curve it has. In the slow-mo shot, it faces more resistance when it hits the pipe core, so it starts to slide during the cut. As it slides off, less of the cut is able to make it through, which means it isn’t able to complete the cut/slice and performs worse in this test because of the extreme curve. This is why it might be a great cutter in other tests but not this one, which may potentially tell you about its effectiveness against bones and other such details

Damn, that's a mighty fine sword from Lancelot Chan. It's both a beauty and a beast. From what I understand, tatami mats are good for testing your edge alignment, but soaked newspaper with cores are tougher to cut through and thus are better to get closer to simulating real-world usage and how it may have performed in history. I guess the more expensive option isn't always the best when it comes to targets.

6:37 It puts you close to the enemy's reach but, it doesn't have to. With curved blades like shinken or the szabla, you can still attack from horseback to your side. Cut the enemy side or his back and stay in a safety zone. Horse changes everything. You can have a trained steed. Or, a battle horse, which knows why, when and how to do things. So you don't have to micromanage him. But a good horse for a fight. A fast, agile, stable, and ingenious one would already be priced very high. Add the costs of quality food and good "maintenance". Then, add training for the horse and you on a horse. Yeah, now things are becoming within the reach of only a fighting noble, or a knight with a wealthy family. Top professionals. Leaders. Maybe an expert officer in the army of the crown. Maybe. The elite guys whose horses are not eaten during the long raid. More possibly such a horse will be fed well with the trooper's food rations. Their horses will become the meals.

Wow, that sword is a beauty! I would love to get my hands on one. You mentioned your katana was manufactured by Hanwei… I have one sword I consider “battle-ready”, and from what I can find it’s called the Hanwei Dark Sentinel. I haven’t seen too much online about this sword, just some really old reviews, but I’m curious to know if you’ve ever seen or heard of it. I bought mine at a flea market, not even knowing what I was getting, but it’s a really nice, if oddly flexible sword.

Many people see a sword and think "that's must be somewhat heavy", but if it's made correctly, they're much lighter than you think, and if the tempering was correctly done, you'll have a blade that you could pass to your children. It also helps when you accidentally hit something hard and the edge doesn't give a single ****. Quick pass through a whetstone, a strop and voilà!, like it never happened. Edit: Support your local blacksmiths! It's a tad more expensive but trust me, you'll have an amazing blade and you're also preserving an art that should not be lost.

I've sworn off purchasing swords until I manage to find a very specific type (trying to fund a comic so random sword-buying was the first thing to get dropped from the budget) but if I were still into buying swords? I could see myself buying that B-E-A-utiful two-handed sword.

Assuming your technique to be equal on each sword and the sharpness of each sword to be equivalent, it seems that the mass of the larger sword, which generates more inertia, as well as the length, which generates more velocity further you go from the handle, made enough difference for The Red Baron to enter the Skallagrim Mount Olympus of cutters. From the videos I've seen, I might place it top 3 that you've ever featured on this channel.

That's the kind of sword you hope they sent for at least, when you are an English king in the year 1649.

This sword looked like you'd have to go on a 15min rant on how it's too heavy. Colour me surprised!

This was great, and feels like exactly the 'right' kind of content from you *buuuuut* there was one two handed sword in particular I was realllly hoping you'd compare it against on that specific target type I'm sure you know the one. If we're doing 'swords that cut real good' it was a shame not to have seen it

That blade looks like it belongs in your hand. Also, I think that workout routine of yours is working.

You can clearly tell from this video how the blade's profile is ideal for cutting, by how easy it is to guide it on the cut and how the blade likes to "separate matter". That's some really nice craftsmanship for a dedicated purpose!
