Alright, today I've got something rare for you. I'm diving into a hardware tutorial about my ‪@behringer‬ Poly-D and how I use it in tracks or my live jams on my second channel. So, there's a brief introduction and a few tips for chords and cool sounds. Anyone who doesn't have an analog synth yet and is considering getting one will definitely find some cool info here.

All the ableton and FL users discovering the quirks of analog is adorable.😂

I had a Behringer Model D but ended up selling it and went for the Behringer Neutron which is in my opinion one of their best analog synths and it is not a clone but their own take on analog synth design and a surprising one (and fun); much more experimental with lots of cv io. I highly recommend it! They are also coming up with a Proton synth (a sister to the Neutron) and I am hoping it is coming out this year!

We need ableton syle tuner in bitwig, all the third party tuners are looks and behave terribly, like this epileptic mtuner. I use a lot of analogue synths and tuner is essential tool.

The CV device includes tuning, but that's not going to cover all the bases.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the moog sound audio, especially the Sub's sequencer. I'm sure you could do something like it in the Grid.

Interesting. There are similarities to the Minimoog of which I have had 3 in my time, but I feel this is different in many ways. I would like to try one out just to see how it feels and sounds. Maybe one day I will do just that.

Yes it is noticeably different in several ways. The mixer is much gentler and doesn’t overdrive much before the filter so it never gets that solid and suppressed overdrive sound. The B Model D has more of that drive but this one has more tonal character. The FM on this can go much higher than Moog or BMD. Overdrive on loop back sounds very nice but in general this synth is more low-mid rangey and not as dark. Grandmother is much closer to the Minimoog than this, but beautiful sound though.

I bought a Sequenceual take 5 2 months ago. I was horrified when it went out of tune. Had to do my research to realise that's what they do. It was cold in transit and my warm home messed with the tuning when it warmed up. It's quite stable now if I use it....

Could you recognize blindly an analog sound from a vst? If not, then why would you still use an analog synth?
@paterfiets

I think the sound has become almost identical. I saw some youtube vid a while ago where even the most hardcore analog synth user failed a blind test vs Virtual Analog. I still think analog filters have something special but it could just aswell be my imagination. And ofcourse I cant answer this for Polarity but personally I really like the hands on experience and the interaction with a physical device..

Because they are fun. I have a decent sized modular system and while it is a massive inconvenience to actually use for producing music it is a hell of a lot of fun to path 😅

yeah why would anyone want to use a physical instrument when you can just sit at a computer and stare at the screen endlessly

If you owned one you’d spot the difference very quickly. It doesn’t take nearly as long to find a sweet spot, and the distortions are much fatter. Bass is so big you may have to cut whereas in VST you are always struggling with the bass tone to sound big and solid enough. I was on VST for 20 years because analog was unaffordable and I was shocked at the sound and endless sweetspot playing in person. Try it!

Yes I can if I'm familiar with the synth. For example, I've yet to hear a vintage Oberheim X, Xa, or OB-8 emulation that really nails it. In person it's even more apparent. In fact, the X8, the actual hardware made by Oberheim (well actually it was made by Sequential with Tom but still), while a very nice instrument in it's own right, can't nail those synths either, beyond some boring original presets that sound really close. I ended up returning the X8 because it just didn't get there and they advertise it like it can do all three. Well, sorta, kind of, as it turns out. Probably the best emu of an OB-X in particular imo so far is Gforce's attempt, and with FX in a busy EDM mix it likely doesn't matter but you have to work to get there if authenticity is your aim, which brings me to my other point: A hardware vintage OB-Xa, X or 8 requires little to no effort to make sound glorious. (so long as you at least know the basics) It's like one giant sweet spot. Results are immediate. You can get away with not using effects because it sounds so damn lush and organic, for lack of a better description on my part. It's like you can hear the electricity moving through it. It's sounds alive, wild. VSTs emus are good these days, they do better with Sequential or Moog style synths I've noticed, and VST digital synths just plain rule supreme in digital synthesis imo, but wow what magnificent instruments the OG analog OB's are imo.
