Any native English speaker should be able to ace this. I did, but didn't learn any of this in school.

The sentence should have been “Hey, MAY I ask you something?”

I am German, I got an idiom wrong. But English grammar is soooooo easy. But I have my latinum, meaning 5 years of Latin in school.

What has happened to breaking down a sentence, every word has it's own story, people just are not taught this any more. Did a little experiment at work. I work at the Shaw Festival Theatre, big outfit, 5 stages, 500 employees from housekeeper's to actors. I could not find anyone that knew that a "forward slash" is actually an oblique sign. Of course I didn't speak to everyone, but I'm a bit of an extravert and have worked there for 15 years, love to talk. I interviewed tons of people. I was really surprised that I never found one that remembered this from English class. I'm 69 years old. Even started to doubt myself and looked it up to be sure! LOL!!

You are fortunate. I had Maleficent for four years. My primary school years. My father took us to the United States. The teachers here made a great effort to teach me American English. I was skilled in that language after one year. After two years, I was as proficient as my peers. A teacher can be psycho. There was mutual animosity between me and that teacher. What's worse, in those days a teacher could whack a child without any fear of reprisal!

I went to school in the 70s, just before education became more liberal. This stuff was drilled into us early on.

This is for 5th graders when I went to school.

My all-time favorite activity was diagramming sentences! Loved it, and did it instinctively for years after graduation.

They are still teaching this stuff. Trouble is, no one is sitting up and taking notice... All the modern tech has introduced so much jargon into the English language as well as American English that it has fallen on deaf ears.

Even laptop language has made proper spelling impossible. U, EZ,Wat, sez and at least one word per post is FU'd. A pencil made you use your brain. A eraser made you rethink you answer. And recess gave you time to associate with others. Everything doesn't need to be abbreviated.

Hi Anne. I'm 70 and people of my generation were also taught grammar. If we turned in an assignment with spelling or grammar errors, we lost marks. The questions that form this "test" remind me of what we learned as part of Grade 3 grammar. I cringe when I hear words used incorrectly, split infinitives, the use of "good" instead of "well" and the ultimate betrayal of the English language, "your" instead of "you're.". I guess my age is showing. I'm in Canada and the education system here is far from perfect. From what I understand, children in elementary school are not being taught penmanship. This is appalling! Those are my complaints for now. COVID has made me crankier than usual!

@@lovesmusic36 LOL, COVID has made most of us cranky! Hang in there! Scary times, especially for those of us who are older. In all fairness, the only practical use for cursive now is as a skill necessary for reading older writings. Sadly, “penmanship” has become superfluous. But, I also cringe at how bad grammar is so pervasive today. One of my pet peeves is the use of the adjective ‘everyday’, not as an adjective, but where ‘every day’ is really what is meant. Language always changes over time, but this feels more like a disintegration!

@@altitudeiseverything3163 Cursive is necessary, I believe, if only to be able to sign your name. I use cursive "every day!" Sorry, I had to work that in! I make lists and notes. I don't think I'd want to print by hand everything when I need to put pen to paper. I also write children's picture books, essays, song lyrics and poetry. Occasionally I prefer to do that by hand rather than on the computer. Again, having to print rather than use cursive writing would be very time consuming. Another irritating grammatical error is when I hear radio personalities reporting traffic and use "alternate route" when it should be "alternative." Social media and texting (the most irritating form of communication) have destroyed the English language. I think I should stop here. I'm aggravating myself! Stay well. Best regards from Canada!

@@lovesmusic36 I agree with *all* of that and I use cursive every day, too! I find printing awkward, slow, and less expressive. But aside from signatures, it does seem to be becoming somewhat obsolete, at least for young people. A shame, really. My best to you, too! ❤️

Just look on Facebook or any other media these days and you can see clearly that people with college “degrees” can’t even apply this language in everyday conversation. 4th graders are still being ingrained with liberal hate and politics.

But this was testing which preposition goes with the specific expression “ the same time “ ..... and not a time expression e.g. “ 10 minutes “

Kate and I both finished the test at the same time. = Kate and I finished the test at the same 'moment' in time. Kate and I both finished the test in the same time. = Kate and I finished the test in the same 'amount' of time. Both the above answers correctly use the prepositions 'in' and 'at' in the sentence stated in the question.

Oh dear mr Woelke. There is no apostrophe in commas. It's a Plural noun. I am also sick of Americans using double negatives "I never done nothing." If you've NEVER DONE NOTHING, you must have done something. The correct grammar is "I have done nothing."
