This Toshiba Satellite is the worst  

Prior to 2014, Toshiba made REALLY GOOD laptops. I had one in 2010, it was a tank. Of course some had design flaws and other issues, but nothing that had to do with build quality. In 2014, they were in the midst of losing MASSIVE amounts of money, so they responded by making the cheapest possible laptop and completely decimating their reputation before they sold 80% of their computer division to Sharp, who then bought the other 20% later on.

Mom and I inherited a Toshiba laptop that was probably about a year old in 2011. It is still our main computer to this day, though it is starting to really struggle with running modern sites as it is now at least 14 years old and still running Windows 7 (not like we could update it anyways lol). That thing has had a rough life, too. It actually outlived the power cord it came with, which blew a capacitor or something last year and was easily replaced (and no worries about exploding batteries, because ours died ages ago, so we popped it off the back and then never got around to replacing it lol). It's a bummer that Toshiba sold out so badly when they clearly have the capability to make fantastic laptops and are just choosing not to.

I "owned" a Toshiba Ultrabook thin laptop from around 2014 which was given to me for Data Recovery after water was spilled on it and it wouldn't turn on. Neither Geek Squat or Microcenter was able to get it working. Ironically, all it needed was the daughter board with the power switch and the ribbon cable for said daughter board. So I found the parts online for $30 or so and swapped them in along with a new battery. The battery charge never read correctly when unplugged from the wall, but it ran for the right amount of time. I gave it to my father to use for mostly mundane tasks. Oh I also upgraded to a SATA SSD and 16GB of RAM, which was the maximum it could take, but I got those parts essentially free too from other projects. The original owner had replaced it under his accidental damage warranty, so he never wanted it back. I could probably fix the battery percentage issue, too, if I wanted to. Not worth it at this point though.

This shows why used business class notebooks are the wise choice over cheap new junk. In the era that Toshiba was new I was building T-61s from ebay wrecks and Nivida GPU fail donors (T61p display on an Intel GPU base worked nicely) and I still have most of them (now as shop PCs etc).

This was my first laptop. Every time I would open it I was afraid I was gonna crack it in half. Over all though, wasn’t really that bad. Lasted like 2years and then I got a new one.

I remember that around the time this laptop came out, I was studying computer science and seeing many classmates with trash computers like this struggling to do simple course programs. They would spend more on books we didn't need or read than a computer required to pass multiple classes. I took some of my loan money (that I paid back in full) to get a T series Lenovo that still runs great 10 years later with only an SSD and RAM upgrade.

The worst of the bunch is the Toshiba C50-B. It would break near the upper part of the keyboard. We replaced a lot of them, and sometimes there are still clients who come in and complain to one of these that is borken to pieces. But I think HP still takes the lead with the 250 G6/15-BS.

In the early mid to late 2000s I worked in the IT department at my college. Toshibas were the most common student laptops we saw. And invariably people would say "I should just get a MacBook, my friend has a MacBook and they never have any problems." Well, yeah. Their MacBook cost 5-10x what your Toshiba did...

Still have mine from 2010. It still works after burning 2 batteries. I learned how to take apart laptops with it. That created a special bond and even though I don't use it anymore, I will keep it close ❤️

My first laptop was a Toshiba Satelite from 2006. It still runs fine, got the first OS installed (XP) and goes like a tank.

I was given a Toshiba Satellite by my university when I started as an undergrad in 2011. I didn't ask for it nor want it as I already had a decent laptop, but I'm pretty sure the uni got a generous kickback from Toshiba for giving them away. It was absolute garbage. Slow as hell, repeatedly crashed and blue screened, especially running off the battery, and weighed an absolute tonne. I even gave it back to the uni, clearly explaining the issues with it. They sent it back to the distributor, who inspected in and said everything was fine, and mailed it back to me. 😭

When I was a young teen playing games with my friend, everytime one of my buddies Toshiba crashed or started acting janky I would yell "Toshiba powers, activate!". He hated it.

We got two Toshibas from my grandparents, they had them for like 14-15 years, we have them since 3-5 years and they are still working just fine.

I had a similar one. Atrocious build quality. Screen layers literally separated and half the screen went black, then the plastic hinge blew apart. It was garbage.

Had a C855-S5214 in August 5th, 2012 as a reward for graduating high school and a C55B in January 2016 as a replacement for the first laptop due to it breaking down long enough to plug it into the tv.

That laptop got me through college, and it still lives to this day. It was great.

My regular laptop is a Toshiba P875 - S7200. 1080p, installed Win 10 Pro, upped the RAM, a new HDD... The CPU can also be upgraded to a quad core. There's a second bay for an additional HDD/ SSD. 17" screen? Oh yeah!

Go back 15 years and every laptop I touched was badly designed. Imagine having to take off the bezel of the lcd screen to remove the keyboard to get to the HD. 20 plus screws and half of the holes were cracked from age. It was a mess.

I still have one Celeron-based from around 2013, currently running Windows 10. I had to replace the battery and the keyboard, but it's still alive and kicking.

I used to “work” on Toshiba satellites. I had to remove them from their boxes , install memory upgrades and re-box them. I just remembered you had to be careful because it was real easy to destroy the threads.

As a technician, most of the Toshiba machines I used to service, were like this, disposable.

We have family Toshiba notebook from like 2013 or so, and it broke just once, when I droped it. Repair was good, and it runs Win 8.1. I know, that it was NOT one of the good Windows OSes, but I literally fell in love with it. The fresh feeling about it, and metro start were just the surface. I loved when I was a kid the Fresh Paint.

i hate older Acer too due to it's hinges that are too tight. One of my solutions is to loosen the nuts before it breaks or after I put epoxy on the plastics or when I replaced the cover to prevent future breaking.

I remember that I used a Toshiba satellite L745 when I was a kid. As I got older, I began to enjoy computer building and fixing laptops. Then I realized how easy back then to repair old generation laptops. You can even remove the keyboard. YES! JUST THE KEYBOARD!

I once had a shitty Toshiba laptop and if you even dared to adjust the screen tilt for some reason a part of the laptop would put so much pressure on the LCD panel that it nearly broke once.

That model is a shame to the old satellite's.

My mom got me one of these for Christmas in 2014 or 2016, either way I had a mid spec laptop at the time that I got from my dad that same year on my birthday. The mid spec pawn shop refurbished laptop blew that thing out of the water and it is still running as my backup to this day. The Toshiba was stripped for parts and the rest sent to an e waste facility to be recycled. I have another one that I don't dare touch as it would probably crumble to bits even with the spare parts I ripped off the old one XD

Had myself a toshiba L755D with the amd a6 quad core processor in it. Thing was a tank having survived 6 or 7 years of previous beatings by another owner and all it ended up needing to be brought back from the dead was a new battery, a charge port and the old hdd swapped for a 256 gig ssd. Was a fantastic machine and got me through all of highschool and a bit of my adult life before picking up an asus q552ub. Also yeah no those toshiba laptops from 2014 onwards were crap, but if you happen to have a 3d printer and some time on your hands they make excellent HTPCs. They run decently quietly too once released from the mess of a case they arrived in.

My dad used to have one of those laptops. At one point, our family computer broke, and we had to use his laptop for stuff for a bit. Eventually, our computer got fixed, but afterward, my dad wouldn't stop claiming that me and my nephew installed stuff on it and was slowing it down. (I never installed anything, but my nephew did for a couple things. My dad was never tech savy either.) At one point, my dad was having a pretty bad day, and eventually he got so fed up and angry to the point where he snapped it in half with his bare hands and broke it to pieces right in front of me. I salvaged the hard drive for my pc, but we don't ever talk about that laptop again.

My dad had a 2011 Satellite P7500 and it was solid - except for the fact that the removable battery is completely dead and Windows is screaming about a malfunctioning cooling system.

I've had 2 Toshiba laptops, one from 2008 which was an absolute tank until I dropped it in like 2020, and a 2015 satellite model which is actually still in great condition.

I had one of these. The HD failed in the first month, so I sent it in. Toshiba claimed that I had replaced factory parts with aftermarket and refused the repair. It was literally unopened.

Idk about this guy, but Toshiba always made good laptops. Unfortunately they started to not care about the build quality over the years. I’m sad that we lost the real Toshiba. This company will be missed.(At least, I will remember them)

I used a Toshiba T4500 for 12 years. But most of what you said about their build quality is true. I had to repair it 4-6 times in its lifetime. Its fan was full of dust and it heated close to 100 degrees Celsius when it was at the end of its life's.

I had one of those laptops, and when the hinges broke, I used plastic glue duct tape and hope to hold it together for a while. In the end, I just sold it for parts at 40$

I got one in 2007. Except the battery, there were no other issues. I’ve successfully sold it in 2011 or 2012.

Around Windows 8 - Windows 10 it was when I saw a lot of cheap laptops like this flood the market. I was lucky to have an HP that lasted from high school to university to my first career job. It still works to this day but it was time to retire it.

I think I have this laptop. Shockingly, it still works and never broke after having it for probably 10 or so years now, though it was not used for much of that.

So I had a Toshiba back in 2017-2019. It was that exact same model with a touch screen. I played mainly sims 2, sims 3 and sims 4 on it however, one day my sister accidentally dropped it on her foot, causing the screen to break so damn easily! It was messed up as the touch screen was broke and would touch on the touch itself making it barely useable. I stopped using it after 2019. My sister did use it back in 2023 when she started homeschool but immediately regretted it and now is using a Chromebook

I had a Toshiba back in middle school, my mom gave me her old Toshiba Satellite L305-S5933 when she upgraded to an HP TouchSmart laptop of some variety and I remember playing all kinds of games on there from stuff it could run easily to games that ran like shit and turned the thing into a portable furnace, yeah, Toshiba definitely built their stuff better back then, I didn't hold on to it when I upgraded to a newer HP Pavilion, which I really regret, since even though it's slow (even was back then) it holds a lot of sentimental value for me, maybe I'll find another one someday

I had a Toshiba Satellite L505D. Never had any serious issues with it until it just got really old.

I used to have a Toshiba. The right hinge got locked up and when I opened it again, that hinge uprooted itself and made it impossible to close again.

I have a satellite pro c660 from 2004 and it hasn't been repaired since, yet it still works perfectly, except for the fact that it's SUPER slow

My dad opened his own business in 2015 and had a Toshiba laptop. Thing was a damn TANK. Hinges are still going, still works (replaced in 2018 or 19), only things missing is one cover. Battery life is also still okay. Its booting off a slow HDD but other than that its basically good to be used again.

I've still got mine. It still works, but it's in the shed not being used. It does have a broken hinge though.

my grandma had a toshiba laptop that to this day still WORKS, but just barely. the battery is so dead that it NEEDS to be plugged in at all times since it cant charge anymore. I have a lot of fond memories on that laptop, from drawing in ms paint, browsing the internet through aol (since my grandma still had that for some reason. for reference this was like 2012-2016 😭), to even playing roblox on it, lol. that laptop was/is a trooper for sure.

My dad owns a Toshiba laptop, he said it was the best laptop he used although it only even runs windows 7 and has GIANT gaps between the mouse buttons and the track pad for some reason with a easy swappable battery and it had an issue with the mother board I think, so now whenever it's turned on it just does a bootloop just turning off and on

Wow, it's been a while since I've seen one of these! My mother had one of these pieces of crap. It overheated, it had to always be plugged in, the keyboard came loose, and we replaced the underside with a piece of cardboard with holes in it duct taped on because of how much it wanted to game end itself. It's a real shame honestly. It was her first computer, she didn't even have a mobile, and it meant so much to her to finally have a piece of tech all to herself that she could take around with her. Only for it to be.. well, yeah.
