I'm 66 and still can't believe or understand why hate is still taught in this world. A child doesn't look at other children as being different. That seed of hate comes later from what they hear and see. As you said, we are all brothers and sisters and hating someone for being different has got to stop. We must open our arms and our hearts if mankind is to survive. I'm still waiting! PEACE...

I agree with you. I am 65 from south Louisiana and now it's like the government wants to go back to the 50's. I remember when they started to bus children to different schools. I still have friends from high school who are white, black, Mexican, from Asia. I am of American Indian, English, French, Spanish and Cuban. I just thought of myself as an American. When I moved to Texas and someone was talking about my mother speaking spanish so well because she was white. That is the 1st time I heard of someone calling themself brown.

So many of the 60s and 70s songs were about peace, love, & spirituality-No wonder so many of us prefer that time period of music. So many of these songs were about caring about the mindset of the people, and the state of the world. I wish people today would head back to these themes and learn from them. We are all members of the human race, and citizens of the world.. We need to remember that.

One of the best songs written. Vietnam was devastating to our young men and this song was the only tribute to them. Those boys fought for each other. They came home to a country that wanted to forget them.
@mnomadvfx
@mnomadvfx Год назад
Goodnight Saigon may have come around much later in the 80s, but it was 100% a tribute to Vietnam vets specifically. This song on the other hand has a much more generic slant to it's lyrics, you could easily take it to mean wartime or peace time with civil unrest/riots and all sorts in between them.

I'm the last of 5 boys, 3 of us left. Thanks to our wonderful parents, we had a loving home, despite being poor. I always think of a picture they had on the living room wall. It was a "Boy's Town/Father Flanagan" ad or promo. It was two boys, one giving the other a "piggy-back" ride. The caption was: "He ain't heavy Father, he's my brother". Right before my father passed, we were at his bedside in the hospital, and he said that his one wish is that we brothers always remain close. This song hits the feels. 😔

The lyrics are from a true story from the early 1900's I believe. A young disabled boy wore very heavy leg braces and getting around school, stairs and to the lunch room and bus pick-up was nearly impossible. A young amazing classmate took it upon himself to carry this boy into the school from the bus. Carried him to each and evert class, up and down the many stairs. At the end of the school day he carried him to the bus. This amazing young man did this each and every day. One day the principal stopped him and asked, " why do you encumber yourself with this? You need to enjoy being a boy and playing the sports you love". The boy responded, His welfare is my concern. He ain't heavy, he's my brother".

On this side of the pond, the Hollies were one of the most successful bands of the 1960s. They notched an unbroken chain of 21 successive top 20 hits between August '63 (Searchin') and October '70 (Gasoline Alley Bred) a feat that not even the Beatles could match. It's still a UK chart record. This chain also did not include two of their, now, best known songs: Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress ('72) and The Air That I Breathe ('74).

'He Ain't Heavy, He’s My Brother' must surely be one of the most covered songs of all-time. Singers including (deep breath) The Ruffin Brothers, Glen Campbell, Gladys Knight and The Pips, Olivia Newton John, Al Green, Neil Diamond, and Barry Manilow have all recorded a version of it. Written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell, who was to die shortly after the song's release in 1970 from cancer.

That was beautifully said Mel. This song always touches my heart. It reminds me of the Bible story about the Good Samaritan. A man found a man from another nation, on the road unconscious and near death. Beaten by robbers. Many people passed by him and could have offered help but refused to. The Samaritian man took the injured man to an inn and paid for someone to tend his wounds and visited him until he was well. The moral of the story was that all men are brothers. I always think of this when I hear that song. His voice is so pure.

The title of this song was the slogan for the famous Boys Town Center(subject of a 1941 movie with Mickey Rooney) and charity for many years, and by the late 1960s(when this was recorded) was ubiquitous and almost universal. The charity advertised in many magazines and newspapers. The lyrics are timeless and appeal to everyone, but were hugely popular and appropriate to the public at the time, because of the US war in Vietnam. The song is still appropriate and moving, to this day. Since I was raised Catholic, I remember the Boys Town ads, and I bet a lot of other people remembered also, when they heard this. Thanks for posting this and reminding me; the Hollies were contemporaries of the Beatles and also a great band.

I was a young adult when this song hit the charts. It' important to realize how strongly people wanted to connect in the '60's. Whites with Blacks. Rich with poor. It's hard to overstate what was going on at the time. Those struggles still echo into the 2020's.

One of the most beautiful songs that know. My chest aches for the love it took to write and perform. What a wonderful world this would be if everyone felt this way! Thank you again for touching my heart. Love y'all ❤️
