Oh no. Im just 5 minutes in and i can already tall Hyce forgot to tell him the most important thing - you have to completely release throttle before shifting gears. Oh, this poor loco is gonna explode before reaching the destination, won't it?

Always use the cars chain (first). If the chain breaks, you've only ruined a car, instead of the locomotive. it costs far less to have a broken car instead of having the loco out of order. Only use the locomotives chain if the car ones is broken

Top speed for gear 6 is 33 gear 7 is 45 and gear 8 is 67 so there's a big difference in speeds in the upper gears so when you down shifted you were already at top speed for 6th gear so you were over rpm as soon as you shifted. 17:55

kAN if you want to make the engine quieter in any diesel in the game you can close the doors and the volume drops significantly.

In Germany we usually use the coupler from the traincars so if it breaks you can still use the coupler of the locomotive for shunting

I cringe every time I hear you ripping the cogs off of that locos gears... Gotta kill the throttle before shifting, but I'm not the first to say so. Love the content. It's a shame that the train stuff performs so poorly, but I know those of us who do show up really appreciate your scratching our niche!

The train content is my favorite on this channel, having Hyce here is just ad added bonus! Keep up the high-effort, incredible content!

Listening to that gearbox crunch was so painful...

It takes so much time to fill up that brake pipe on a 2 mi train that there's an entire department devoted to checking everything on the train and keeping that pipe full of air before your crew actually comes to pick it up. If you're in a good yard, there will be air in the ground and the train will already be connected to that so you don't have to wait for your engine to fill the brake pipe.

Should have heard Hyce just absolutelutely shout "AYE! AVAST!" the first time he ever laid eyes on that handbrake 😂

Part of your 30 seconds was having to restart from a standstill, Hyce flies into the track much faster than you did, and you don't have to uncouple the cars at all to turn in the job even though the book says to. You only have to put a handbrake on and be stationary, they can be fully coupled to locomotive still.

You've got to go back to 17:55 just before kAN down shifts. Watch the RPM gauge creep its way to explosion. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Funny how neither of them used dynamic brake after Hyce explicitly brought it up at the start.

Loving these races, syncing up the videos is great because I can use two monitors. I think I like the steam engines more so far as they feel more chaotic :D but the shifting was neat as well. I keep rooting for you Kan you have to keep racing till you win at least once! Might have to bring back caboose racing to win

In the UK we call them screw couplings. You would use the locomotive coupling to attach to the train.

Please put down the throttle while shifting. Otherwise it damage the gerabox a lot!

At least in the UK, the answer to "which coupling do you use" is that the locomotive coupling is used to connect to the train, never the other way round

these look a little like a bigger version of what we'd call a class 06 here in the uk. I operate it's slightly bigger cousin a class 08 on a daily basis at work, built in the 1960's and still being used today. Unlike the 06 units that were direct drive and used to clunk pretty hard when put into drive, the 08 class is diesel electric so is pretty smooth when driven correctly. On an interesting note you usually use the straight air break with the loco on notch 1 to control the loco whilst at low speed. The accuracy you can get on fine control is pretty impressive, until you strap 300+t of passenger cars on the back with only the locos straight air brakes that is 😂

If I had to guess it is a sequtial gearbox, similar to a semi, but it might have a high gearbox and a low gear box. the low gearbox spins the high to get speed and extreme torque and pulling power.

39:13: The next best race there would be a race up top on that hill and then grab the slug, push it all the way to the back and then bring it all the way down. Add some spice to it, mates!

We always use the coupling on the locomotive but that's because it's beefier than the ones on the wagons, yours look to be about the same

I did mention it in the chat on Hyce's RRT3 stream, but it probably got lost - maybe if you want more speed downhill without blowing the engine, might be possible to pull the reverser into neutral? Though IDK if it ends up locked in place when you're moving. Otherwise might be interesting to see what happens if you kill the breakers / hit the fuel cutoff... But really that'd count as Super Bad Practice on a real line, you'd be expected to keep within the loco's maximum operating speed with the airbrake and dynamic brake, and if it was still running away with you, shove it all into emergency and prepare to bail... Also from what others have said it seems like there's a pretty steep jump from "8th" down to "7th" already, and even worse to "6th", so might be better going 1-2-4-7-8 instead? Or at least including both 6th and 7th, but shifting through 8th between them to avoid blowing up when not in VR? (I guess 7th to 4th would be just as big as 8th to 6th, as you've two separate gearsets...) It is a little odd the way they've done it, but it's probably for extra challenge - or actually making things easier and letting you run faster than a real DM shunter would? I thought the real ones tended to be 4-speed with either a H-shift (which would also give you a proper neutral), or two sticks with two positions each (possibly a neutral in the middle of each) - but also they tend to top out no higher than about 18-25mph / 30-40kmh, which would be a bit dull in a game like this and not suitable for anything more than yard duties. As there's only really 8 usable speeds out of the 9, might have been better to make it like an actual twin stick truck and have a more clearly defined two-position range selector with a four-position H-shifter next to it... work your way up to 4-Low, then shift to neutral, engage high range, and start again from 1st or 2nd on the main box...

while you where hard on the transition it was acutely the engine ya blew up if it had been the transition the engin would still run but no gear action just like real cars with blown transmtions

Genuinely tried to sync the videos....no go, VC audio lag makes Hyce sync and you 700ms (or so) off, or you sync'd and Hyce double talk. Sad face. I knew it would be not a thing, but I figured I would try lol.
